I've heard plenty of people say they prefer the 777 to the A380.

I've been on an EK 777 but never an A380 so I can't really compare the two.

I have been on EK A330's, A340-300's and A340-500's though and have to say my preference would be for the 777.

Maybe I'll give the A380 a bash one day.

What is it about the 777 that you prefer? Is the cabin and seat layout better?

I'm surprised we have five A380 capable stands, I never knew that before. Also it's slightly strange to read that "only one A380 may move around the aerodrome at any given time", referring to BHX...

I preferred the seating on the 777 although in fairness there wasn't an amazing amount of difference. I aim to try the A380 though when we get one.

As far as I know the two end stands either side of the pier are A380 capable although only one side has the double air bridges at the moment. I think there are also three remote 80's stands that could take one.

We'd rarely ever see more than one in at a time and it would take something exceptional to see more than two.

I suppose it's not so much the aircraft itself, although the ceiling is certainly lower on the 380 - upstairs anyway, but what it brings with it.

I have no preference for the actual ride any more than I do with, say, the B 737 and A 320; individual airlines have different types of seats and legroom which to me affects the passenger experience more, one way or the other, than the type of aircraft.

I'm not a fan of large aeroplanes and if it was feasible I'd quite happily fly to Australia on a narrow bodied aircraft. The 380 is the embodiment of large aircraft and its larger passenger complement (than the 777) somehow seems to give a less personal feel, even in the premium cabins. Furthermore, many EK airport lounges have not been increased in size with the result that a 380 passenger load can and does at times create a less pleasant experience with overcrowding.

I've no doubt that the economy of scale dictates that the 380 is the way to go in future for airlines like Emirates on long haul routes where the passenger demand is sufficient but it doesn't mean that we all have to be overjoyed about that.

I'm sure that many people prefer the EK 380 over their 777; it will always be a subjective opinion.

My father in law is a regular user of the EK A380, and he finds the large business class cabin very impersonal and large. He says the J cabin alone is almost as big as flying on an A320.

How are Emirates doing cargo wise up at Manchester, I've heard rumours that because of the lower capacity on the A380 there may be a cargo service soon?

EK have 2 freighters into LHR each week (Wednesday and Saturday) which started as 77f but I believe has changed to 74f equipment due to demand. If a 3rd flight came on line I can't see it being regional but possibly a Monday from LHR. All the infrastructure is there and the staff know what they are doing (not to decry Dnata in the regions but they don't handle that many freighters)!

Dnata used to do the CX freighters at MAN and are in line to do the Airbridge cargo flights next year, both of which were and are going to be B747-8Fs

I also believe data do the Lufthansa cargo flights which do include B77Fs, so, they do at least have experience in Manchester, which, according to the cargo manager for EK cargo in the UK is one of 3 possiblities (the other 2 being STN and LGW, but I don't see LGW being in the race given their almost non existent pure cargo market).

Of the 3 options I feel STN to be the most obvious choice. While dnata MAN have experience with 74f operations I feel STN has the better facilities. I remember when LGW had daily freighter ops with Dasair as well as others. That experience can and does vanish as years go by if it is not used regularly enough.
I am firmly of the belief that the plans are in place but just have not been announced yet. It would of course be ideal for BHX now we have extra ramp space on the way with hangar 1 gone now but I am not holding my breath.

Hi there ray and all, I here from my reliable source, that the Emirates A380 is due in next week, this wouldn't be to do with the launch of the 3rd daily service at all would it...I wonder what emirates are up to... Andyc

There is no A380 showing for next week and I'm sure we would have heard about it by now.

Are you sure if wasn't a possible A380 announcement next week?

Hi there ray, no my source informed me that it's due next from one of the Emirates pilots apparently told them . Andyc

Good Afternoon Gents.

I have just spoken to a colleague of mine regarding the potential for a visit by an EK A380 and he has confirmed that no plans exist for a visit. My source for this sells Cargo for EK (and he knows how much of a spotter I am so he would let me know any good or bad news!!!). As I mentioned before I am confident that the plans are in motion for them to come in but we must wait for the announcement to be made before we will know any more.

Interesting.

You'll also notice that Rome was due to get a second A380 on Feb 1st, that has now been canx and it will remain a 77W (although at the moment that is only until the end of March).

First class will still be dropped on jan 1st. Currently not bookable on any platform.

The poster in question builds his list as a hobby and is by no means an official or accurate representation of operations, so, the omittance of the BHX drop is just an oversight.

An nice little clip from yesterdays Midlands Today.

It's great to see cargo doing so well with JCB joining JLR in using the services

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
