But why would this airline choose BHX of all airports to launch this new venture. Yes i know we will have no United after october but surely they are taking a massive risk ?

To slightly modify Jerry's question - will they need to acquire new aircraft for this venture or are the aircraft in their current fleet capable of doing it?

The BHX team may well have given them a good sales pitch! They must have looked at the numbers and liked what they saw especially if they are using more fuel efficient aircraft than United. As well even if they are basing just one aircraft at BHX (hopefully widebody) there has to be enough spread of routes they could do to make money on the operation. Also it's possible they could've gotten a good deal out of BHX including some advertising help. I know CWL does a lot of advertising promoting it's airlines routes.

Well I don't come on here for 24 hours and come back to find 105 messages - what a read that was!

Lost as to which airline could be operating the N.American routes. I recall thinking the other day, but wasn't sure if I actually mentioned it - easyJet or Ryanair - the latter of which has since been mentioned.

I think I ruled easyJet out as they're not committed to BHX for short haul, so very unlikely they would be for long haul.

As for Ryanair, Mr O'Leary was saying how just the other day Ryanair wouldn't be flying between the EU and UK after Brexit. Whilst that is most likely a load of b******s, if you took it seriously, you could take it one of two ways. Either they won't fly to UK airport at all, or they'll redirect aircraft based at UK airports to other destinations outside of the EU (US/Canada?).

Either way, I doubt it will be one of those two.

As for the potential eastern route, now that we "know" its a route served from LHR, but a country that isn't served from Manchester or Birmingham, I can only think of Kuala Lumpur or Tokyo? Both logical next steps in Manchester's eastern expansion, but interesting place for Birmingham to start in the far east.

There is also another place in the Far East that has a certain carrier looking to the UK for its next steps of expansion.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
