Here is a thought. There is undeniably money to be made from flight cancellations under EU law. About euro 350 per flight. Is there a racket that no one has paid attention to. Airline staff are well placed to know which flights and which sector will suffer from crew issues. It is well known that EZY have crew issues towards the end of the annual leave period. So an insider trading type racket could avail of ticket purchasing in those sectors with the highest likelihood of cancellations and then scoop up all the EU reg compensations. Obviously done by 3rd partys.

Has no one thought about this?

Bit of a risk though. No-one can be certain until the day which flights will be cancelled. Someone might shell out for a ticket they don't want in the hope or expectation that the flight will be cancelled in order to get their paws on a bit of compensation, and then be left with an unwanted flight on their hands and with no compensation if the flight operates.

The risk/reward ratio doesn't sound attractive to me.

I was once told in an induction with a major airline that they would go out of business if everyone claimed compensation for every delay. It was such a concern that the said airline pays to have numerous standby aircraft with crews ready to be dispatched at a moments notice to ensure delays are kept to a minimum.

First cancellations today for quite a while that I'm aware of.

easyJet EZY6221 at 0730 to Paris CDG and return EZY6222 at 1045 cancelled
Ryanair FR6023 due 1350 from Beziers cancelled although the outbound FR6022 at 0930 is shown as departed on the BRS website

Some long delays.

easyJet EZY6030 due 2330 last night from Barcelona is showing an eta of 1650 today
easyJet EZY 6046 due 0055 from Palma is showing an eta of 1725 today
Ryanair FR7227 due 0825 from Krakow is showing an eta of 1310 today
Ryanair FR8212 at 0910 to Wroclaw is showing 'next information at 1235'.

I was expecting some inbound diversions to other airports this morning. Where I live about seven miles from the airport the fog was extremely thick and lasted until well after 9. Perhaps today is one of those days when BRS stands above the lower-lying fog.

Not too bad in the end. The ATC strike in Italy lasted from 1300 to 1700 today.

Two easyJet flights were cancelled:

EZY6185 to Rome FCO at 1210 and return EZY6186 at 1805
EJU3361 from Venice MP at 1425 and return EJU3362 at 1455

Other flights to/from Italy before and after the strike action managed to operate, viz:

easyJet to/from Catania and Pisa
Ryanair to/from Venice MP

Flights shown in red cancelled because of overseas industrial action

Ryanair FR504 due 0740 from Dublin shown on BRS website as diverted to BHX

I don't know why. An Aer Lingus Regional (Stobart) from Dublin due at 0800 landed.

The BRS airport website arrivals/departures pages have not been updated since 1040 with no information provided re arriving/departing aircraft since then, so it's not possible to see whether the very strong winds and heavy rain that have been present for much of the day have affected flights.

BRS website departures/arrivals pages again having problems today. Nothing shown against flights after md-afternoon and before that only a few flights have departures and arrivals information shown. Impossible therefore to see if there are any cancellations, diversions or very late-running flights.

Still not working properly today. Only five of the 40 odd departures so far today are shown as 'departed', and the last arrival shown was at 0152 (a very late-running Ryanair). There is no indication against any arriving flights since then, so anyone checking the website because they are meeting someone will be frustrated.

BRS does seem to have recurring trouble with its website movements pages. I wonder if the FIDs at the airport are working properly.

Snowfalls in and around Bristol this morning led to some delays at BRS, including an easyJet flight to Edinburgh reportedly delayed for nearly three hours because of de-icing requirements. Does it really take that long, especially in November which isn't exactly the busiest month of the year, or is the newspaper report an exaggeration?

There were only 17 departures scheduled before 0800 today. In summer there can be almost twice that number.

BRS website showing:

Ryanair FR8297 due at 1205 from Alicante diverted to BHX
Ryanair FR4754 due 1620 from Tenerife South diverted to CWL

I don't know why. It's been misty and murky all day in the Bristol area so presumably the diversions were weather-related. Other aircraft seemed to be landing aroud the times these two diverted though.

easyJet EZY6189 to Pisa at 0955 and return EZY6190 due at 1500 cancelled.

No doubt due to four-hour Italian ATC strike this afternoon.

Ryanair flights to/from Venice MP and Milan MXP operated as did easyJet flights to/from Venice MP and Rome FCO.

Numerous easyJet flights cancelled tomorrow according to FR24 - the airport website so far is only showing a handful. It's all to do with another French strike which is due to last until Sunday. What the strike is all about I have no idea - the French don't seem to need a reason to 'down tools'.

The French have a hell of a reputation for strikes. They must have the most strikes in countries followed be Italy in Europe.
