Thomson Boeing landed on Cyprus taxiway instead of runway
22 September, 2011

Cyprus Civil Aviation officials are investigating how a Thomson Airways Boeing 737-800 from England failed to land on the runway at Paphos airport and landed instead on the parallel taxiway.

Flight BY-3351 had departed from Doncaster with a delay of three hours and with 192 passengers and 7 crew on board was cleared to land on the runway when the aircraft aligned with the parallel taxiway and touched down on that taxiway on Wednesday afternoon.

The aircraft rolled out safely and taxied to the apron. As result of the incident a replacement crew was flown to Paphos and returned to Doncaster with a delay of 10.5 hours.

Paphos airport underwent a major overhaul in 2008 and the taxiway had no clear markings.

In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, operator Hermes Airports spokesman Adamos Aspris said “this was surely a development no one expected. It is a serious incident and the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation

Well, the cat is out of the bag. DSA will be one of the first UK airports to see the dreamliner on a regular basis.

http://www.routesonline.com/news/29/bre ... doncaster/

Basically, when it enters service (eventually), it will route MAN-ALC-DSA-ALC-MAN on tuesdays.

It will be a super opportunity for the DSA PR machine as it will be one of only a handful of airports in the UK to be visited by the aircraft initially. When the aircraft was launched Boeing pushed it as the aircraft that can operate from shorter runways without the need for a re fueling stop. It seems very few airlines are showing any interest in utilising this unique feature of the aircraft. I think only Bristol is penciled in to see the Thomson's Dreamliner?

Well i just hope that tui Thomson's have there first Boeing 787 Dream-liner delivered from Seattle USA by February 2012 to operate these flights. It is also worth pointing out that the routesonline website is quoting that these flights from Manchester, Gatwick and Doncaster are shown in the OAG worldwide airline/airport timetables.

I only mention this as I here that due to delays in the aircraft production and backlogs. Thomson's wont be reciving it's first Boeing 787 Dream-liner until the 3rd quarter of 2012 with September been muted elsewhere.

In July last year Chris Brown, Thomson MD, said that the B 787 would be used at GLA, EDI, BHX, EMA, LGW, MAN and BRS when it begins operations with the airline, at that time said to be in 2012/2013.

She gave no specific details but It was assumed by many that the early aircraft would be based at the likes of LGW and MAN and used at the smaller airports mentioned for perhaps one or two weekly charter flights each week.

As has been said, the information re DSA has been taken from OAG timetables.

If it is reliable user001 points out that DSA would be served to Alicante in the middle of a 'W' diagram from MAN.

It may be that this is in the form of 'working up' a new aircraft type for the airline and that DSA provides a convenient airport in the process.

I have spoken to people who would know about this, and apparently the schedule is not true, and Thomson have no plans whatsoever to run the B787 into Doncaster.

Saves any wasted hopes or plans to visit the airport.

Also, won't be delivered this side of September 2012.

Thanks for that User001.

It's a shame the aircraft wont be visiting DSA anytime soon. We've got friends in Sale so it's better for me to go see it at Manchester anyway.

No problem Aviador.

Apparently, Thomson are investigating why such information is being relayed to the public from un-authorised sources.

Thomson are going to make quite a big deal about the launch, evident from the Thomson Dreamliner website, and this sort of publicity doesn't go well as many people are already dubbing it the 7-late-7 and the fact no-one knows exactly when its coming. This sort of publicity only adds to the confusion.

TOM is also expanding DSA
TUI increases holidays from South Yorkshire

TUI has announced it will offer more holidays from South Yorkshire following news of an improved road link between Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the centre of Sheffield.

TUI brands Thomson and First Choice will initially offer an extra 14,000 holidays from the airport for summer 2013.

Airport director Steve Gill said: "We expected the new road to bring additional benefits to the South Yorkshire passenger and with over 150,000 Thomson and First Choice holidays on offer from Doncaster Sheffield Airport in summer 2013 we are pleased that we remain Yorkshire"s largest operation for the company."

TUI has two Thomson Airways 737-800s based at the airport. Extra capacity will be offered next summer on flights to Palma, Dalaman and Reus.

Paul Cooper, from Thomson and First Choice, said: "The news that the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme link road has taken a step forward is something we have been waiting to hear for DSA.

"We are confident that this new road will open up key markets in Sheffield for us and help to attract passengers from the city."

The scheme includes the opening of a new link road from Junction 3 of the M18 serving the south-east of Doncaster, improving access to the airport from Sheffield, Rotherham and further afield.

The new road is expected to reduce journey times for airport passengers and cargo operators from Sheffield by up to 20 minutes.

Construction of the road is expected to start later this year and be operational in early 2014.
I hope this doesn't affect LBA and TOM will stay commiteed to LBA this time.

So if the road is not ready until 2014, why expand in 2013? Obviously nothing at all to do with the road!

It does show commitment though, sort of like "thank you for committing to build the road, here's a small token of our appreciation...".

More likely, a token gesture due expansion at LBA, probably nothing tp dp with the road.

I don't think airlines do token gestures, its probably due to these flights departing fully booked this year and are trying for more capacity next year. Also the Reus uses G-THOP 737-300 and i understand its going at the end of the year so they will be using an 737-800.

It happens in business all the time, aviation is no different. Chances are the airport have been working with them to increase capacity, and with LBA base they want to show they remain loyal to their DSA passengers.. The airport will have a large hand in marketing too, hence the press release mentioning the road improvements

If you use the airport or work there it will be a welcomed relief to know an airline is operating additional capacity, sadly three extra flights a week is not quite the same as extra based aircraft. Thomson have probably looked at the schedule and seen gaps where they could better utilise their aircraft. You can't knock the airport for mentioning the new link road though.

Got back to DSA from ACE(Lanzarote) this morning. The Thomson 737-800 appeared to be completely full of Passengers. As it was a late flight the Pilot informed us that London Control would allow us a shortcut over the middle of the country, rather than having to go up to Manchester before turning right towards Sheffield and Doncaster, the ususal flightpath.
This shorcut meant that we got home 25 minutes early. The last section of the flight was at 38,000 feet. The pilot told us that we could go to this height when we had burned off some fuel.

I am not sure if the reason for taking the plane to it's highest altitude was so we could get the shortened flightpath, Does anyone know ?

Anyhow great flight and the Aircraft was great. Enough legroom for me and I'm very tall.

TOM's extra capacity at DSA in 2013 should amount to around a 7% increase in available seat offerings for the summer season. At least it's a small increase rather than a decrease, but I would expect more still in 2014. I would love to see the 787 on regular rotations here, & let's hope they introduce them gradually on short haul first off next year, that way we might get one on an odd 'W' leg from MAN, EMA or LGW. Also, as we are often used for training flights on the long haul fleet, we might just also get lucky there!
I saw the A N A Dreamliners at Frankfurt earlier this year, and they really are that bit different, & futuristic looking.

My understanding is that the flight characteristics of any aircraft type are determined by many variables, but always by weight. Burn off fuel, the plane becomes lighter and can then fly higher ( if its aerodynamics permit) flying higher reduces resistance which reduces fuel burn!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
