Hope everyone's well.

I've just read a piece on the MEN re the 'Archie's' diner in T2 - they seem to be slating a July opening. With things as they are would we be likely to see a dual T1 & T2 operation, or even a full swing into T2 only ops for the Summer?

According to sources on Twitter, but not made official yet by the airport, T2X to open on 1st July, with T1 remaining open too. T3 not due to open until at least the winter season but this is also to be announce.

Well obviously 1st July opening didn’t happen. I’ve heard various dates ref reopening of throughout July, just a case of waiting for the official announcement now I guess…
Outlets in T2X are hiring staff now so a sure sign of a pending opening hopefully…

Manchester Airport’s new Terminal Two extension to open for first passengers this week

  • Jet2.com, TUI and Singapore Airlines will be the first to operate flights from the new facilities, with more to follow over the coming weeks
  • Details of shops, bars and restaurants that will open revealed
  • Two new lounges will offer passengers a relaxed space pre-flight
  • Covid-19 safety measures to give passengers peace of mind as they fly through the Northern hub
  • New flythrough video brings the terminal to life
Manchester Airport today confirmed the first passengers will pass through its new Terminal Two extension on Wednesday this week.
Jet2 and TUI flights will operate from the flagship facility initially, with others to follow in the weeks ahead, as the Government’s policy for double-vaccinated passengers comes into play.
The extended terminal is the centrepiece of MAG’s £1bn Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP), which was first announced in 2015.
It was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020, but this was put on hold after the coronavirus pandemic ground international travel to a halt.
To ensure the smoothest possible opening when flying resumes in earnest, MAG has agreed a staggered launch of the terminal with its airline partners. It will see Jet2 start flying from there from 14th July, with just three flights on the first day – to Menorca, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca.
TUI will operate flights from the terminal from 15th July, with services to a range of destinations including green-listed Malta and Madeira. Singapore Airlines will move over on the 17th.
With the Government set to update its red, amber and green lists on the 15th – coupled with the amber list exemption for double vaccinated passengers from 19th July – further announcements about new flights from Terminal 2 will follow over the coming weeks.
That will see more airlines move across and more retailers and food and beverage outlets confirm their launch dates.
Karen Smart, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said:
“After a long wait, we are delighted to confirm the first passengers will be able to enjoy our new Terminal Two this week. It is a proud milestone for our airport as we begin to emerge from the restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 crisis, and an important moment in our 83-year history.
“This project was always about offering the modern airport experience that families and businesses across the North deserve as they travel through their international gateway to the world, and our new terminal certainly delivers on that goal.
“The impact of the pandemic on the travel industry means we are not able to immediately welcome as many customers and airlines into this fantastic new facility as we would have hoped.
“As Government restrictions continue to be eased, and travel to more destinations is opened-up in the weeks ahead, we will be making further announcements about the carriers and retailers operating from T2.
“In the meantime, we look forward to celebrating this milestone and welcoming those who are travelling through the new terminal later this week. I would also like to thank all our colleagues and partners for their hard work and dedication in getting us to this point.”
The expanded terminal has a light, bright and airy check-in hall, with designs that set the tone for what passengers can expect throughout.
Once bags are dropped-off, passengers will head into the new security area, which has 10 lanes that are 29 metres long. They introduce the latest technology, allowing passengers to flow through as quickly and easily as possible.
The new departure lounge is where the new terminal experience comes to life. New features include a honeycomb light installation with 16 million settings that proudly illuminates the space, giving a nod to the famous Manchester worker bee. A new 81 square metre digital screen will take centre stage to provide interactive content and information to passengers.
A wide range of new shops, bars, cafes and restaurants will feature in the new terminal, including many brands that have been born and bred in the North, as well as a series of popular chains – all food and beverage outlets have committed to high street prices.
Initially, Pret-a-Manger, Costa Coffee, KFC, The Amber Alehouse and The Bridgewater Exchange by Joseph Holt will be open to customers. Manchester institution Archie’s will open its new Terminal Two location on Thursday, as will juice bar VIT, while other venues will open once more passengers start using the terminal and further announcements will follow.
Two airport operated lounges will also open, offering passengers additional luxury and a relaxing space pre-flight.
It is not just departing passengers that will get a new experience. Those arriving will also get to sample what the new terminal extension has to offer. This includes a new immigration facility, which is four times larger than the current space, and a spacious, bright arrivals hall. A modern new baggage reclaim will also open, with three of eight new baggage belts starting to operate.
The new terminal will also be fully Covid-19 secure and will have a range of safety measures in place that passengers have experienced throughout the airport during the pandemic, including an enhanced cleaning and sanitising regime.
The six-year terminal extension project has been spearheaded by construction firm Laing O’Rourke, alongside partners such as architects Pascall + Watson, design consultancy Arcadis, airfield works contractor Galliford Try, engineering and architectural services contractor Jacobs and baggage contractor Vanderlande Industries.se can be found here: www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-advice-novel-coronavirus

New Terminal Two – all the key information
Manchester Airport has created a flythrough video to showcase the new terminal before it opens. This can be viewed here:
In the meantime, all of the key passenger and operational information in relation to the initial trial can be found below.
Airlines
Jet2 will operate from the new terminal effective from Wednesday 14 July and TUI flights from the terminal will begin the following day. Singapore Airlines will move over on the 17th, with more airlines due to move across during the course of the summer.
Passengers can consult their airlines for further information and can also keep an eye on the airport’s social media channels, where airline moves will be posted as and when they occur.
Food and Drink
The new terminal will be home to many new exciting eateries for passengers to enjoy before their flight. A lot of these are well known local brands, offering something for all tastes and budgets.
The full list of eateries was announced 2019 and five of these will open on Wednesday. As passenger numbers increase, the airport expects that more of these will open in line with demand. Passengers travelling via the new terminal from Wednesday will be able to enjoy:
  • KFC
  • Pret-a-Manger
  • Costa Coffee
  • The Bridgewater Exchange by Joseph Holt
  • Amber Alehouse, headlined by Se7en Brothers Brewery
Manchester burger chain Archie’s will be serving up their famous burgers, shakes and waffles from the following day, and juice bar VIT are also due to open their unit on Thursday.
Lounges
Manchester Airport’s Escape and 1903 Lounges will both feature in the new terminal. Each will offer passengers a touch of luxury and relaxing space before their flights.
The lounges will have a combined capacity of 400 passengers and will be located on the upper level of the enlarged terminal. They are accessed from the main departure lounge and both benefit from floor to ceiling windows, providing panoramic views over the airfield.
Escape Lounge prices start from £19.99 and 1903 Lounge from £32.50. Both can be booked online at www.manchesterairport.co.uk/at-the-airport/airport-lounges/

Is the old (original) check-in area and departure lounge now closed? I believe the plan was to upgrade the old facilities - does anyone know when that project will start, and how long it will take?

The new facility does look very impressive.

Yes, I imagine that expenditure will need to be reduced until travel volumes recover. It will be interesting to hear what the new plans are for the redevelopment. For example the future of Terminal 1. Will that keep operating for several more years, or will they close and mothball it? I imagine the original plan to demolish T1 won't happen anytime soon, as that literally would be pouring money down a giant hole. I also doubt we'll see much more progress on the T2 rebuild / extension - the additional piers will likely be delayed for some time, for example.

I did hear that T3 will never reopen, but I doubt that is correct.

In theory T3 could remain closed as, during Covid, domestic passengers have been processed through T1, although I understand - and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - arriving domestic passengers have returned via T3.

I assume other domestic routes in to T1 are still being bussed to T1 baggage hall.

With BA it's been a bit of a mix. When BA were regularly using gate 1 last year (now gate 35) you would exit via the T3 baggage hall, or if parked on to another stand bussed to the T3 domestic arrivals.

Then ftom March to around June this year BA were using gate 6 as they were using A321neos, and that was bussed to T1 baggage hall so exit from T1.

Since about 3/4 weeks ago BA are back to using stand 142 and it's back to the old route, so down the stairs at the end of the jetbridge and out through T3 baggage hall.

T3 is open for the BA departures as they uses 142, but no shops are open.

Next airline relocates to Manchester's Terminal Two as Eurowings moves in

Eurowings will become the latest airline to relocate to Manchester Airport’s new-look ‘super-terminal’ on Monday 2nd August.
The Terminal Two extension opened to the public on 14th July with Jet2.com and TUI operating from there in the first week.
Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Brussels Airlines, airBaltic, Ethiopian Airlines and Aegean Airlines have all now followed suit in moving their operations to the new terminal.
Passengers travelling with Eurowings should now use Terminal Two from Monday. Those with Manchester Airport car park or lounge bookings will have them moved across and customers will be notified accordingly.
As summer progresses and international travel restrictions ease, further airlines will move across and they will be communicated appropriately. Passengers can also keep an eye on the airport’s social media channels for the latest advice, guidance and information

I’ve been trying to guess which airline would next transfer over to T2. I was wondering when Turkish might? And then maybe the Lufthansa group and SAS maybe?
I mainly fly easyJet and Ryanair so no chance I will be using T2 for a long time yet

Heard mixed reviews ref the new T2, as expected with most things.
Biggest issue seems to be queues at check in/bag drop.
Are all T2 based airlines using the new check in area? I read a while ago that there’s a phased opening of the check in areas and baggage carousels?

Arrived at the airport yesterday afternoon for a look around the new T2 check in and arrivals areas. Very impressed by the sleek and modern check in area. Quiet at that time (3.30pm) only Ethiopian flight was checking in with minimal queues, despite hearing a few reports of long queues at check in, I found it strange because most flights are still using check in desks and kiosks in the old check in area. TUI & Jet2 look like they have adequate room with the amount of desks they have and self service kiosks so surprised ref the “long queues” comments recently.
The arrivals area didn’t look very big but I assume this was due to the hoarding still in place around the likes of Starbucks. I thought the shops in arrivals would have been open by now!

If anyone wants to see long queues at security, please visit T1!! I arrived at 4.00am, dropped off my bag at departures B check in, then hit a massive queue for departures B security, thankfully after about 5 mins a friendly member of staff directed a load of people upstairs to departures A security. She was on the radio to a colleague who was complaining that security upstairs were sending everybody downstairs, but only Ryanair flights use check in and security B, so I don’t understand the logic of this, as security A soon turned busy with only 3 lanes open!
T1 very busy as I write this now (4.55am). I assume some security staff on furlough so certainly not enough available in my opinion now that both Ryanair and EasyJet have increased their ops from MAN.
I just hope my border force experience is better when I return next week!

Overall though, good to see an increase in passengers and flights.
Onwards and upwards!

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
