A good point raised there. I believe the time has come to now incorporate both T1 & T3 provided it relates to the MANTP project.

I'll look at changing the thread title.

After @ttyd's excellent update there is very little that I can add from my photo visit yesterday and so I will just include this one of the infamous Skylink travellators (from T1 to the GTI) being worked on and they may be back in action before the end of September. Then I have one of the T2X landside frontage. All other photos that I took will be included in the Manchester Airport Photo thread a little later this morning.

Anyone else notice the Starling that appears to be trapped in the skylink between terminal 1 and the train station?
I too noticed that the travelators were being worked on last week when I flew back from the States.

Yes, I noticed a couple of them yesterday when I was visiting. I have a feeling they may have a secret escape route but don't tell Security!!

These particular four are 26 years old now. Do you know if they’re being patched up or replaced?

A question for you guys regarding the travelators, why did they never install the fabulous rubber travelators like Gatwick south terminal have/had? (It has been a while since I used them, not sure they are still in use!) I remember them being the most smooth and comfortable travelators.

That Ginga is the million pound question. I suppose, for the present at least, it is cheaper to repair what is there already rather than install totally new equipment.

I suspect that, with the amount of funding required for T2X, there is only so much in the pot for other work.

Same goes for some of the airbridges on pier C...a bloody embarrassment for some of the foreign crews coming from their modern airports!

I think what happens - Maybe it's a mobile thing - is that unless you close the screen it still shows the next YouTube video.

I'll leave it at the moment and see if anyone else funds it on the wrong video when they sign in.

Thanks for checking it for me. It's a useful update.

Nice video! The scale of some of the areas is really apparent.

I also liked seeing how some of the parts will come online progressively. It seems most of baggage reclaim will be in T2Classic still.

"We'll have 10 e-gates" - you what?! LCY has more nowadays!!

I was also surprised to hear the 10 e gates! I think the current T1 has that now? I think I heard 12 manned desks?
It’ll be 6 baggage carousels in the new T2 plus the refurbished 6 from the current T2 so that should be 12...
I can’t remember what was said ref the number of security lanes?

Yes we have to remember that this will be approximately half of the total number of everything until T2 has been refurbished.

Good news ref the eventual total number of e gates and manned desks, let’s hope UK border staff them adequately.
How many security lanes in each area? When is the next TAS meeting? I’m really looking forward to see if pier 2 will actually be built next...makes sense I think, keep the current air bridged stands on T2 until the new taxi layout has been sorted and new remote stands opened...

Hi all,

I was doing some thinking the other day about what a merged T2 and redeveloped T1/3 would look like, and started doing a bit of sketching. Obviously the easiest thing to do is just extend T2 all the way across the T1 car parks and build piers 5, 6, 7.... what have you. However, this involves converting a lot of the current landside to the apron and it feels like cheating. I set myself a challenge to merge T2 & 1/2 without changing the boundaries of the apron.

Warning - this is just speculation and fun on my part, and is not happening!!

Some commentary:
  • The T2 link corridor follows the apron boundary down to where T1 currently sits.
  • Pier C is demolished in stages, as pier 4 comes online.
  • The end of pier B is then demolished, and T3 extended part-way southwards, parallel to the runway. This creates more gates with short taxi times and proximity to the runway. T3 is popular with low-cost carriers for this reason, so it seems sensible to build more gates with short taxi times - this part of the airport would become the main low-cost hub.
  • Once T3 is extended southwards, the remains of pier B are demolished along with T1. A substantial upgrade can take place extending the main T3 facilities with more check-in, arrivals and departure lounge. This would sit somewhere around where T3's security is now, allowing existing T3 to continue whilst the extension happens.
  • Once the main T3 facilities are complete, we can extend F gates further southwards as far as necessary, and also build a final pier (marked E gates) where T2 and T3 meet. There's a bit more room here, so we can put widebodies and some facilities here.
  • We can rename T3 => T1 :)
  • Aircraft stand count is totally guesstimated from existing drawings and the aircraft I see on Google Earth.
Would love to hear thoughts, or your own personal ideas about expansion...

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
