Manchester Airport targets parking ‘tailgate cheats’

Manchester Airport is installing cameras in its car parks after a surge in drivers dodging parking fees, the Manchester Evening News reports. The cameras, which check number plates, are being brought in after a surge in people cheating the system. A spot check found 27 drivers in just one hour ‘tailgating' behind other vehicles to get under the barrier and avoid paying car park charges.

The newspaper reports that some passengers are leaving their vehicles for up to a fortnight while they go on holiday then sneaking out to avoid the £27 a day fee. The airport believes it is losing thousands of pounds in unpaid fees, but also fear it is only a matter of time before there is a serious crash.

The airport – which made more than £51m in car parking charges in 2008-09 – has teamed up with car park enforcement agency Parking Eye to launch the crackdown from next month. The automatic number plate recognition cameras will be paid for by Parking Eye and will take the details of every car entering and leaving the car park. Drivers caught dodging fees will be sent notices of £90 fines, which rise to £120 if not paid within 18 days or drop to £60 if paid within 14 days. Anyone who fails to pay will be pursued through the courts.

Profits from the scheme will be given to Parking Eye but the airport will recover lost ticket revenue and is expecting to make more money in parking fees. Sarah Barrett, from the airport, told the newspaper: ‘The aim of the project is not to punish our customers but to stop those motorists who park their cars on our premises and leave without paying the tariff for their stay. We want to be fair to all drivers parking at the airport so these new measures are aimed only at rogue drivers.'

‘This new project will allow us to spot them and ensure our parking charges remain consistent without hiking up the price for all. We want to provide the best parking facilities for legitimate customers and the parking regulations are clearly displayed at the entrances around the car parks.’

Manchester Airport charge for parking even when car park is full!

Manchester Airport bosses have been warned by Trading Standard for making people pay to ‘park’ – even when its short stay car park is full, the Manchester Evening News reports. Trading standards officers took action after a complaint from a driver who spent 20 minutes searching in vain for a space.

The passenger was trying to use the multi-storey car park at Terminal Two so that he could wave off a friend who was going on holiday. He eventually gave up after realising the car park was full –but still had to fork out £2 to get out. He said there were no signs to tell him that the car park was full and asked why the machines continued to issue tickets even though there were no spaces.

Trading standards officers visited the airport and warned car parking bosses they could be breaking consumer protection regulations. They said that if it happened again they could take action and told them they should look at ways of letting passengers know when car parks are full.

Fiona Sharkey, head of regulatory and enforcement services at Manchester council, told the newspaper: ‘We were made aware of a problem relating to the signage at the short stay car park at Terminal Two. We investigated this and have discussed with the airport changes they will need to make, which they have agreed to.’

Does anyone have tips about obtaining discount on airport parking? I am using Manchester Airport every week and am pre-booking the "Meet and Greet" service on line. The booking form includes a field to enter a promotion code, but I have never seen one. I did call them once to ask about a "season ticket" type of scheme, but it seems that nothing like that exists just now. All help greatfully received.

I've often been tempted to try different parking arrangements on my frequent trips from Manchester Airport.. but this put the Beejayzus up me!

I have to say that when the family are going on holiday, I'm prepared to pay premium price just for peace of mind and hassle-free parking. I;m due to fly from Manchester in August and while surfing the various options, came across this advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcUbF8wLEAM It looks good (using the card you booked your tickets with to enter the car park) but I wondered if anyone had tried it, or if this is part of a wider scheme?

I have to say that, touch wood, the only problem I've ever had in leaving a car in an airport car park, was once when someone had crawled underneath my Citroen ZX Avantage, and stolen the spare wheel! It was onviously a design flaw not to have it locked in the boot, but suspended in a lightweight frame underneath the rear of the car! ;)

Hi Colin4May

The book on line parking whereby you use your debit or credit cards to enter and exit the car park are good so long as they work and the majority of the time they do so you shouldn't experience any problems using it if you decide to go for that option but don't forget to take the card you booked with, with you.

So far as the security aspects of parking, It might be worth doing a Google search before booking. Something like "how safe is parking at xxx"? The Google search might return some results if people have had things stolen from their vehicles there before.

Hi Thanks for that reply. I am googling airport security as suggested

Just done a quick search myself here and came across this, so you should be OK because it would indicate a low number of crime problems in the car parks.

"All of these car parks hold the Association of Chief Police Officers Award for security. On-airport parking"

Holidaymaker finds his £12,000 Audi 'dumped in muddy field by parking firm'

A car owner from the Black Country claims he returned from holiday to discover a parking firm had dumped his £12,000 Audi caked in mud in a boggy field – despite paying £52 for 'safe and secure' parking.

Not what you want to come back to when you arrive home from your holidays.

People will still insist on using these dodgy firms despite the warnings.

I always look at it this way, if the official company is charging say, £50 for parking, and then you get an unofficial one charging just £29, ask yourself, why?

My experience with the parking products offered by MAN is a positive one. The meet and greet is great and you can be out of the terminal and back on the road in 5-10 minutes.

It's how MAN will make much of its revenue moving forwards, and why the size of new car parks built for the TP are so much bigger than their predecessors.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
