Discussions relating to London Gatwick Airport
Even when a project is being financed by private investment instead of taxpayers’ money, the government can’t make a decision without delaying it for months 🤦‍♂️

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander broadly backed the plan with a statement she was “minded to approve” the plans but today formally extended the deadline for a final decision until the end of October.

£2.2bn Gatwick second runway decision delayed

From 2030, Gatwick Airport's expansion is expected to enable up to 100,000 additional flights a year, increasing passenger choice and boosting airline competition.

looks like they’re going to get a head start on Heathrow RWY 3. It will be interesting to see what the airlines do over the coming years.

It certainly looks as though they’re getting a head start on Heathrow’s third runway. It’ll be fascinating to see how the airlines adapt their strategies over the coming years, particularly when it comes to slot allocation and long-haul capacity.

The Court of Appeal's decision to throw out the final legal challenges against Gatwick's Northern Runway project means the £2.2bn dual runway expansion is officially ready to move ahead. With the original planning consent upheld and the eight-year legal battle wrapped up, attention finally shifts from the courtroom to actually getting the work done.

Before any tarmac is laid or dual runway operations can launch, there are a few key steps to tick off. Gatwick moves straight into detailed engineering design to bring on major contractors for civil engineering, airfield infrastructure, and terminal reconfigurations. The airport also has to formally meet a list of pre-construction requirements set out in the approval, covering everything from environmental, noise, and carbon monitoring to local road upgrades around the perimeter. Initial enabling works will then involve shifting the Northern Runway's centreline 12 metres north giving enough clearance for routine narrowbody departures alongside the main runway along with re-routing taxiways and utility lines.

Enabling works are slated to run through late 2026 and 2027 before the heavy airfield construction starts. The target is to have full dual runway operations up and running by 2030, eventually bumping Gatwick's capacity by 13 million passengers and adding around 100,000 flights a year.

Having proved that a major UK airport expansion can actually clear the highest legal hurdles, it leaves an interesting questions for other regional airports seeking expansion.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
