No it did not fail 'everytime it snowed'
Does anyone remember the problem we had wtth the runway 14 Glideslope aerial when it was first installed due to the signal disappearing down the tunnel and they had to re site it
to stop it happening maybe another move of the site would resolve the issue but as somone has pointed out a lot of money and work for a once or twice problem may not be seen as necessary.

I remember hearing the comments of the 748 calibration crew after installation. Coming via a then ATCO, the ILS approach on RW14 was "unflyable". Some tweaks later and it was approved. Speaking from personal experience, it's not at all pleasant sitting in the cockpit when the aeroplane is trying to follow an unstable ILS signal. I had this in a 757 flying into Malaga, following an A330 down the approach. The pilot handling elected to hand-fly instead!

I've no idea how all those airports deal with it. But it will certainly happen if they have a ILS system. Perhaps they don't need ILS all the time and have other approach aids to get them down to a decision height to land visually.

RNAV is an approach aid as opposed to ILS which is a landing aid. RNAV would get them down to a decision height when another aid(ILS) or visual landing is required.
What we need is some RNP Approaches like the rest of Europe

Don't mention moving the glider slope @lbaforever will think it's Christmas again

Well just look at the degrees of yesterday, who got going faster?... When you're travelling I accept things happen in winter...but you need to look at who deals with it sooner....And that is rarely LBA...I have a friend who does daily airport runs, so I get fairly accurate updates....
But it's my money and I'll use Liverpool in future winter trips...... assuming we've got many left in us of course..
I think you wont be the only one that thinks like this. There are good reasons why the airport hasnt been open but travellers arent interested in the 'why' they just see other airports continuing to operate and make a direct comparison, then vote with their feet next time.

thanks. so with your experience at MAN did their ILS fail everytime it snowed? Or is this a uniquely LBA issue?

(Edit: just to add I didn’t see any notams detailing failure of ILS at at MAN yesterday and today, and they have had significant snow fall)
Just to reiterate, significant snowfall is subjective. LBA had significantly heavier snow falling over a much longer period as well.
So whilst Man were clearing 1-2 inches snow it was raining. Whilst LBA were clearing 6 inches of snow it was continuing to snow.
Completely different scenarios.

Manchester is currently snow closed again due to heavy snow fall. It’s just lost a whole bunch of flights which are diverting North as far as Edinburgh and South down to Luton and Gatwick.

It’s nearly twice as many diverts away compared to what we lost on Sunday at LBA. But you won’t hear that been reported will you?

Looking at fr24 lots of holding and delays into Manchester this morning also reported Liverpool is currently snow closed

what on earth are you on about? of course it has been reported. please stop with this "conspiracy against poor little LBA" nonsense.
Don't think this is anything to do with conspiracy theories, more about someone trying to quite rightly stick up for LBA when so many are quick to bash and say it's the only airport that suffers weather related issues

something which literally no one has said. i mean, you are saying no conspiracy theory, then in the same sentence!

of course true support is using the airport rather than just posting some words on an internet board which a few other anonymous people can read. my count for LBA is 381, what's yours?

My count is less than that @KARFA but equally I am sure I haven't had the amount of business funded trips you have.

That said I am not going to get into a petty discussion over numbers of flights from/to LBA that I or anyone else has taken, but I use LBA as first choice if I can, though that isn't always possible because I don't just want to fly to Tenerife or Majorca. My holidaying/leisure preferences are slightly broader than that.

And if you, or anyone for that matter, doubts my unwavering support for LBA then I am well and truly gobsmacked.

Perhaps you felt the need to bring up flight numbers because you received a justified challenge to your conspiracy theory comment.

Either way, I know where my support lies and I don't need you or anyone to tell me different.

Rant over.

mine are self funded before we start with the "business funded trips" nonsense too. i don't doubt your support, i am concerned about a mindset which develops in to "everyone is against us".

anyway, i apologise, i realise i am being quite blunt here and taking this all a bit o/t. so i will leave it there and accept we can agree to disagree on it.

No apology needed but thank you anyway. It is a forum after all and we are ALL entitled to an opinion. Happy that we agree to disagree if necessary

Manchester Airport also temporarily shut both of its runways for the third day in a row today due to heavy snow, with flights diverted and more delays expected later”. -DailyMail online 07/01/2025.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
