MAN will see a B77W on the EK17/18 on the 17/18 and 24th March to accommodate the checks

Seems after a GDS check, the A380 has been put back on the EK17/18 on these dates, but, I suppose time will tell if it operates.

I couldn't face the embarassment of putting my pictures on here, even if I knew how to.

Acknowledgement to user001 for providing this link in the BHX Emirates thread which actually seems to relate more to MAN in the regions.

In the above linked report the Emirates UK Vice President makes a number of complimentary remarks about MAN but one that surprised me in a sense was this:

Manchester is beginning to amaze everyone. It is building itself as a strong international airport from which people realise you can fly long-haul. The business community doesn’t want to come to Heathrow. They would rather fly long-haul from their local airport.

Hasn't this been the case for many years? Is it really such a recent thing?

In 2006 the airport was handling over 22 mppa which is about 2 mppa than the current total, albeit MAN's passenger figures have been rising rapidly since the 17.7 mppa of 2010.

My question then is this.

In 2006 what was MAN's long haul network (in general terms) compared with the present? I realise this question does not just concern Emirates but as the EK vice president has made the comment perhaps this is the best venue for the question.

In 2006 what was MAN's long haul network (in general terms) compared with the present?

The long haul offering now may be slightly better than 2006, but the market has warped slightly so not a simple statement of an increase.

The middle eastern market has grown considerably. From just a smattering to up to 7 flights a day, this is the main change in Manchester long haul.

North America has Shrunk quite a lot.

The bmi base has long gone, BA has ended JFK, PIA has stopped all but 1 transit route, Toronto has shrunk considerably, and AA no longer serves Boston or Miami. Lastly Delta has stopped JFK, now only serving Atlanta.

In terms of North America, we could soon enter a period of growth again. AA is seriously re-evaluating Miami now it has a joint venture with BA, Air Canada Rouge is said to be starting Toronto, and Thomas Cook is changing its business model considerably with a shift to Scheduled, shared with Condor, and more flights to Las Vegas, Orlando International and aid to be starting Oakland, California.

The crème de la crème for MAN is to re-gain Hong Kong or gain a new mainland China link, and is where they are focusing their main attentions at this time. I believe Manchester is the best positioned airport outside London to gain this link for various reasons, but until either the Chinese visa situation is relaxed, and/or APD is reduced, the UK regions will struggle to gain a link.

Many thanks for that, user001. I guessed the Middle East is much stronger now but hadn't realised that North America had regressed that much.

Did MAN also once have an Australia link with BA/Qantas?

Many moons ago we had Qantas to Sydney, SAA to Johannesburg, Gulf Air to Abu Dhabi (obviously that route now in the care of Etihad) and most recently Saudi Arabian to Jeddah and Riyadh.

Other routes of note were BA to Los Angeles, Islamabad, Hong Kong, Toronto, Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong (Oasis also came close to a Hong Kong route, as MAN-DUS-HKG was loaded into the website just before they went belly up).

Looking further back into Early history, we also had Sabena to JFK with B707's!

there was also the air canada flights to toronto, which have disappeared. middle east and far east is the areas which are growing and need to gain routes on, especially hong kong as previously stated.

I have to confess that my long-distance flying these days is limited to a couple of trips a year MAN-YYZ. In the past there was a choice, nowadays we simply have AirTransat, whose winter offering will be a single flight a week. The prospect of other operators coming back would be good news, indeed.Transat has improved its product ( and what do you expect for £75...which is the actual air fare for my next trip the rest being taxes, duties, fuel surcharges etc.etc.)but some competition would be a good thing!

I spoke to someone who works for Emirates yesterday who told me all flights were going out pretty much full. That's fantastic for Emirates. I don't think it will be long before the A380 is making more appearances at Manchester airport. Not wanting to put a dampener on what is good news, it does make you question whether the success of Emirates at the airport could potentially hinder other new start up long haul operations from Manchester airport? Emirates has such a good reputation and product with it's connectability, passengers are turning to the airline in huge number potentially at the expense of other operators.

Interesting you say this now as the EK19/20 evening flight is confirmed as an A380 from 21-30 September, and us viewable on their booking page.

As for the second point, its possible that the MEB3 and Turkish have mopped up the majority of the low yielding 1 stop traffic, but I dont think it fully puts carriers iff. Sometimes its the opposite, and it stimulates demand.
For example Saudia Airlines have confirmed they are to return to MAN next year, Singapore are rumoured to be going to 10 weekly, Cathay have confirmed they will return with an A350, Jet Airways have stated they wish to serve MAN and a Chinese carrier is very strongly rumoured to start next year.
Seems its not so quiet on the Eastern front, and far from critical mass (as you said on the BHX thread) just yet.

Emirates will upgrade the evening EK19/20 to A380 from 1st Feb, confirmed in the booking engine.

BHX 3rd daily from Aug is taking up the cargo slack for a while until 4th daily comes online, which apparently isn't until October due to B777 fleet availability. It does mean a cargo shortfall from Feb-August, but hearing EK cargo may be making appearances at MAN ad-hoc.

The B77W off the EK19/20 is needed elsewhere.

Emirates have now confirmed the 2nd daily A380 on their website. The A380 is switched from Rome and they get the MAN B77W.

DUBAI, U.A.E., 8th January 2015: Emirates, a global connector of people, places and economies, has announced that as of 1st February 2015, its EK019/020 service between Dubai International Airport and Manchester Airport, currently operated by a Boeing 777, will be replaced with an Airbus A380. The introduction of the second daily A380 means that half of Emirates’ 16 daily flights to the UK will be operated by an A380 from February.

The second daily A380 will increase Emirates’ capacity from Manchester by 13 per cent, with over 20 per cent of this increase in the premium cabins. The upgraded service will feature 14 seats in First Class, 76 in Business Class and 427 in Economy Class. Passengers throughout all classes can enjoy access to over 2000 channels of films, TV shows, music and games through ice, the airline’s award-winning inflight entertainment system as well as wifi connectivity and gourmet cuisine.

The A380 on EK19/20 was originally only bookable until 28th March, however, it is now bookable right until the end of the current booking period.

1st January sees the EK19/20 flight switch from 3 class A380 to 2 class A380, adding 97 extra seats each way per day.

Emirates have a surprise for MAN at the 25th Birthday celebration in November. Keep your eyes peeled!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
