Re: Passenger Figures Update

When we consider what we had last year that we don't have this summer, these figures are not surprising.

From memory, this time last year we had:

Cork - Aer Arann, Dalaman - Pegasus, Dalaman - Onur Air, Bodrum -Onur Air, Malta - Malta Bargains MD83 flight, Saturday Spanair flights to Palma and Ibiza, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Madrid, Valencia, plus additional rotations to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Heathrow, Inverness and more flights from Jet2 on some of the more popular routes. Although we have gained additional routes with Jet2 this year (Dubrovnik, Jersey etc) I don't think overall they are doing much more this summer than they did last in terms of aircraft movements. Hopefully we may find that when we get past July, into the peak season, the return of Onur Air, plus additional TCX route to Reus, and of course Gatwick, might boost numbers a little - although countering that the business passengers always go down at that time of year.

If we can get down to around -10% beween July and September I think that would be a pretty postive result in the circumstances.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Onur Air is starting shortly, using the same aircraft as last year - (a321 and a300)

Sadly Spanair has gone, but iberia would of been a good choice to replace some routes and do MAD do you not think?

TCX to Reus would be good too...guess we will have to wait and see.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

...and apparently both the Bodrum and Dalaman routes are to operate within half an hour of each other on a Tuesday morning. So, if we're getting an A300 and a A321, that's around an extra 530 passengers heading through security into departures on top of what is already a very busy morning with all the Jet2 flights. I suspect the airport will need a team of people to pull passengers out of the queues for flights that are boarding.

It's all fun I guess.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

According to the ad on the LBA web site home page, Goldtrail have added additional seats. No other details are given, but I just wonder if they are going to upgrade the Bodrum to an A300 too - otherwise how COULD they add more seats??

Type Rate B767
TCX are supposed to be doing Reus from July to September using a Glasgow based 757.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Maybe they will upgrade all their flights to the A300-600SL then? Guess we will all find out soon enough.

That TCX Reus then - is it going to operate a specific pattern? ie: GLA - LBA - REU - LBA - GLA

The Goldtrail Dalaman has been brought forward to start on the 7th July, which is where I presume the extra seats come from.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Thanks Empire - no sign of that on the airport schedules, but there again why would there be when the entire web site is now so poor and generally out of date.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

June 2009

CAA stats published today and, heaven forbid, LBA features in the first batch.

281,378 passengers handled in June, down 10.9% on June 2008. However, atms were down 16.2% so it seems that the loads must have been up on average on the reduced number of flights that did operate.

Rolling total for the 12 months ending June 2009 is 2,656,833, down 7.8% on a year ago.

Taking everything into account there are grounds for optimism in these figures.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Doesn't sound so bad considering the depth of the recession we are facing.

I tend to read various reports and analysis in the media and the language they use makes the reader feel pesimistic to the point of feeling like everything is falling apart with the economy collapsing, then when looking at the actual figures the downturn is often quite marginal and not all that bad considering we are in a deep recession.

[textarea]Leeds-Bradford sees big surge in visitor numbers

Rain-soaked Yorkshire people are making a last-minute dash for the sun after being let down by weather forecasters who wrongly predicted a ‘barbecue summer’.

The unexpectedly-wet summer has led to a flight to the sun by fed-up West Yorkshire holidaymakers.

And it means that the school holiday rush from Leeds-Bradford International Airport will be busier than ever this year.

Tomorrow marks the start of the airport’s traditional busiest week of the year now that all the schools have broken up.

But this year airport chiefs are geared up for an even bigger surge in passengers as the chilly wet weather has driven people expecting to bask at home to seek out sunspots abroad, More than 70,000 people are expected to pass through the airport next week.

Malaga in Spain is the top choice for family and beach holidays.

And Dutch capital Amsterdam the number one venue for short city breaks – for which there has also been a surge in bookings.

Tony Hallwood, airport commercial director, said: “The first week in August is traditionally our busiest week of the year. But this year airlines have seen a surge of late bookings as people look to escape the poor summer weather and find a bit of sun.

“The usual destinations like Span and Portugal are still very popular but we have also seen a big demand for the Eastern Mediterranean with Greece and Turkey attracting bookings."

All airports are releasing similar press statements about increases in passenger numbers at the moment. We'll have to wait until the next CAA stats are out to see if there's any 'proof in the pudding'.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Leeds CAA stats not available just yet but here's some figures from neighbouring airports...

Manchester is -10% down again on last July figures -10.2% down year on year.
Doncaster is -10.1% down,15.6% down year on year
Durham Tees Valley is down a whopping -60.3% which is -39.8% down year on year.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

The stats are now on the CAA website and July had 316365 passengers a drop of nearly 6% on last year.

A drop of anything is not good, however, in this so called `economic climate` right now, i guess it`s not too bad, plus considering other competing airports around, we have one of the lowest % drops. Hopefully from October, or definately March 2010, they should start to steadily increase...

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Well I never thought I would see the day!!!

The rather pathetic Edinburgh figure of 1070 for August, has not only been beaten by Aberdeen (1072), and Exeter (1453), but by the IOM (1230). So 2 ERJ's aren't even carrying as many as 2 SA227/DO228's. And the Exeter isn't even daily!!!! Glasgow was not much better at 1318.

Jet2 continue to get their buts kicked by FlyBe on the Belfast runs. BFS down 15% to 8329, City up 3% to 6973.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

So on average, based on 2 x 50 seat aircraft operating 5 days a week in both directions, there are roughly 4000 seats available per month on GLA and EDI, and flights are roughly only 25% full. The fact it is August and many of the typical passengers on these routes are on leave may have something to do with it, but the losses must be mounting up. I would think that BMi cannot continue like this much longer. We can't afford to lose the flights to either city, but I would think that an smaller, turbo prop aircraft would be more suitable at least until the economy picks up. Any thoughts on who might operate these routes and with what?

Scotair and their very nice Dorniers would be my choice especially since they are now a franchise of Air France (I think!). I have said it before, but a CDG route by this airline would also not go amiss and if we could get them in doing CDG, EDI and GLA that could work quite well especially if an aircraft or two were based at LBA

Re: Passenger Figures Update

I wonder how many passengers have just lost confidence in bmi because of all the chopping and changing that have made? Flybe need to take over these routes as soon as possible before anymore damage is done.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Passenger stats for September 289871 down -4.4%, rolling years passengers stand at 2,606,752 down -10.3% on last year figures.

The airport is still performing relatively well compared with other regional airports. Most of the rolling year reductions were due to the week winter schedule. This winter we will probably see a further reduction passengers of around 10% on last winter. Still a long way off yet but winter 2011 is likely to be significantly better.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

That is not too bad at all in September considering the routes we had last September that we don't have now - such as Madrid, Valencia, Heathrow to name but 3. Ryanair should make a huge difference next winter when they operate flights through the winter which Jet2 tend to drop (eg Palma).

Re: Passenger Figures Update

Extremely quiet today. The sign of things to come for the winter ahead I expect.

Re: Passenger Figures Update

It seems to be the norm now that LBA is one of the last airports to appear in the CAA statistics.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
