I agree in once sense, having one airline dominate the destination portfolio from the airport can't be good in the long term especially if said airline goes under. On the other hand, could having lots of airlines leads to too much competition actually causing airlines to shy away from some routes?

That's always the dichotomy at smaller airports. It's great to have a carrier that brings in so much but the danger is that it can become too dominant and flex its muscles too tightly (Exeter has had this problem with Flybe that has threatened 'retribution' in the past when that airport did not appear to be acting in a way that was to Flybe's liking).

I've never been convinced that Ryanair is as committed to BRS as easyJet but Ryanair is needed, not only to operate routes that easyJet doesn't itself, as a counter balance to the Orange airline.

I've heard some compelling rumours that easyJet will be basing yet more aircraft at BRS in the coming years.

Indeed. There are what appear to be credible rumours that there may be as many as 16 or 18 aircraft based within the next few years.

There are currently some gaps if a 12-aircraft base is taken into account. It's unlikely that in peak summer the airline will leave aircraft idle for periods as they do in the winter.

Looking at the easyJet booking engine Bilbao, Isle of Man and Zakynthos now appear in the BRS drop-down list of destinations. Isle of Man appears 4 x weekly, Bilbao 2 x weekly and Zakynthos weekly.

Bilbao was operated by easyJet in 2003 and 2004 before being axed. Zakynthos would be competition for the charter routes in summer. Isle of Man was last operated by Flybe with not very high passenger loads so this is a major surprise to me.

good news with 3 routes. rather suprised with iom.but you never know. to operate routes, airlines and airports try and see what sort of pax loads to expect.
i for one wish they would sort something out with cdg.
i would have thought 1 rotation in the morning and 1 in the afternoon,if there is slots im sure that would generate more revinue than iom, not that im knocking the iom route.

Fair question, especially as there are more weekly charter flights to Zakynthos than to Rhodes. I was half expecting Venice Marco Polo to return (it did much better loads-wise than Bilbao when both were previously operated) and possibly Milan.

Isle of Man is intriguing. On the face of things one wonders where the punters are coming from to sustain a 319 four times a week, bearing in mind that Flybe was averaging in the 30s per flight most months at 3 x weekly (or was it 4?). Then again when Ryanair did a daily Shannon they brought in over 90,000 per year compared with Aer Lingus regional's daily Shannon which brought in considerably fewer than 30,000.

New routes or as in this case the restoration of old ones are always pleasing.

easyJet has today announced a further three new routes to its growing portfolio. From April and May next year, the airline will start flying to Bilbao, Isle of Man and Zante from Bristol Airport.

The announcement follows easyJet’s October announcement of four additional new routes to Gibraltar, Porto, Lanzarote and Catania. In total, easyJet will add seven new destinations to its Bristol operations next summer as part of its five year agreement with Bristol Airport for continued growth.

The trio of new routes went on sale this morning at http://www.easyjet.com. More than 47,000 passengers are expected to fly on the three new routes in summer next year, and more than 115,000 on the seven new routes combined.

Bristol to Bilbao is a year-round service flying twice a week from 19 April 2015. Prices start from £30.99 one-way*

Bristol to Isle of Man is a year-round service flying four times a week from 19 April 2015. Prices start from £28.99 one-way*

Bristol to Zante is a summer service flying on Wednesdays from 13 May 2015. Prices start from £34.99 one-way*

As part of easyJet’s expansion at Bristol, a twelfth aircraft will be located at the base in summer 2015.

Isle of Man and Bilbao will be year-round routes with Zakynthos summer-only (entirely understandable and expected given this particular holiday market).

Of the last nine new easyJet routes at BRS seven are year-round: Keflavik, Marrakech, Lanzarote, Porto, Gibraltar, Isle of Man and Bilbao with just Zakynthos and Catania summer-only.

Not only is this good news in itself but it will also help to rebalance BRS's summer bias.

Summer 2015

It looks as though the 12th based aircraft will be at BRS for most of next summer. The original announcement was capable of being interpreted as peak summer only (ie approximately mid-July till early September as occurred with an extra aircraft in some years in recent times).

Looking at Monday 1 June and Monday 25 July the following is the first group of departures on those days:

This indicates five A 320s (same as summer 2014) and seven A 319s.

Strangely, a check on Monday 25 May (Spring Bank Holiday) the seat selector shows all twelve departures on A 319s which I assume is a mistake.

Budget airline easyjet predicts today to be the busiest Christmas getaway weekend in its history.

The firm projects that more than 170,000 passengers will fly on over 1200 flights across the network.

Of these, over 100,000 passengers are set to fly to or from easyJet’s UK airports, with 11,000 passengers expected to travel to and from Bristol.

A record 1.5m passengers will fly with the airline between 20 and 29 December on over 11,000 flights, with passengers travelling early to avoid the last minute Christmas Eve rush.

The most popular overseas Christmas destinations for easyJet passengers departing the South West are Geneva, Amsterdam and Malaga, whilst those travelling within the UK have opted for Edinburgh, Belfast and Glasgow for their Christmas getaways.[/textarea]

Bristol easyJet flight forced to make an emergency landing after smoke in cockpit

Flight from Berlin Schoenefeld to Bristol diverted to Amsterdam on Sunday evening reportedly after smoke was reported in the cockpit. The aircraft landed safely at AMS.

Winter 15/16 now on sale. Having a look at February there appears to be some significant increases with edi going 5x daily on some days and Glasgow going 4 x daily too. Extra Funchal, salzburg and I think a marginal increase in Geneva too. Lanzarote , Porto,Gibraltar, and Isle of Man make their winter debuts too
