And we think BHX has been hard hit by Monarch. Poor GIB (Gibraltar) will lose about 35% of there passengers. :(

Im thinking this would be a good route for BA Cityflyer ? On the Embraer 190 ??

But maybe the runway is too short.

The E190 lands at LCY and there runway is 500 feet shorter so I don't see a problem with it.
I wonder if it could be a possible route for Flybe? With an E175 maybe or a Dash.

I'm thinking if, and it is a big if Easyjet do give BHX a more concerted effort we'll see routes from existing bases with non based aircraft or a 'w' pattern maybe.
When, sorry if, U2 give BHX a go then it will be with a base. Ex ZB crew already located. Yes LTN isn't that far but anyone who wants to employ them BHX based is on a winner. Jet2 and U2 are both coming out of all this relatively unscathed where the media and forums are concerned. They are the 2 that are going to pick up the bulk of slack. That's an opinion and by no means a fact!

BrumX - if it comes to fruition I'm sure no one will forget :)

easyJet are apparently adding aircraft at MAN, BRS and LPL so they do not seem to have a shortage of aircraft and they have plenty on order.

Gibraltar might have been at risk even if Monarch had survived - both the 737NG and the MAX compare rather poorly to the A320 in terms of runway performance. I saw some stats on the PPRUNE Monarch thread saying that under ordinary circumstances the runway would be too short for the MAX. The 757 can operate out of GIB though - Monarch used to use them.

EasyJet wouldn't need to take too much of a risk.
There are beach and city routes which were being serviced by Monarch and could be filled by away-based metal to build a presence. If they hesitate too long, Jet2 will fill the most profitable routes , IMO.

I think you meant to say the "other forum" ;)

Brum X has started the "Get easyjet into BHX" on Easyjet other social media page. I wont stop until it happens ;)

Cant wait to see all my responses tomorrow and i will keep going until i get a result. Its time for action folks. Its time for Easyjet at BHX.

With regards to Gibraltar, I vaguely recall somebody mentioning that the pilots have to be training specifically to operate there. If that is the case, I'd find it highly unlikely any airline would train pilots just to serve BHX-GIB. It would only be beneficial if the airline served GIB from multiple airports.

Maybe you and Ray could be joint CEO?

I hope EZY launch into BHX, give RYR a run for their money.

EZY know they'd get all the slots they want at BHX, they also know the PAX figures are deffo there, huge opportunity for them.

Seems like they are our only hope at the moment - Ryanair look punch drunk and if what I've just read on the MAN forum is true, it seems BHX has no place in Norwegian's future plans :banghead:

So as Monarch bows out and Jet2 grows at BHX, I thought I would do some comparison....

full

Grey - Route not served
Yellow - Routes served
Orange - Route served by both Jet2 and Monarch

Some quite interesting stats come out of this...

Jet2 will serve more destinations that Monarch, even with a smaller base. Monarch did however operate much higher frequencies with the likes of Barcelona, Gibraltar, Lisbon and Larnaca being a casing point with regard to the biggest losers. That's said, next summer, Jet2 will represent circa 85% of the weekly capacity offered by Monarch this summer.

Does anyone know how big bmibaby were at BHX when they were still around? They went in 2012, and since then BHX has grown by almost 45%.

Yes BHX passenger figures may drop or stagnate for a few years, but they will rise again. Consider that 8 months ago Jet2 didn't fly to BHX, yet in 8 months time they will have 8 based aircraft. It has been 5 days since the collapse of Monarch was announced, and look what Jet2 have added in that time. Just think what else Jet2 might offer in 5 months time!

At least having 1 less airline at BHX should increase yields on the remaining airlines. That in turn should encourage them to expand more. In that light, the loss of Monarch, Norwegian and Vueling may not be such a bad thing. It is for that reason why I am still on the fence about Easyjet. Whilst it may appear having an Easyjet base at BHX would be a good thing, I'd be concerned they'd come in, dump capacity on some routes, cut costs, and force out the competition.

bmibaby had nine based 737's at Birmingham (a mixture of -300's and -500's) and left a pretty big gap when they went.

I'm not too hung up on the numbers, the market will see it return to where it should be. What concerns me is replacing some of the now unserved routes. After bmibaby went it took five years or so before we had another airline serving the likes of Prague and Lisbon, I now wonder who is going to take on Stockholm, Valencia, Lisbon, Preveza, Gibraltar and Nice? There is one airline that could potentially offer all of those and more from day one. I take the point about capacity dumping, growth would have to be achieved in a sustainable way, but eventually risks have to be taken to progress otherwise we may return to the stagnation that we witnessed for so long. Bringing Jet2 in this year was seen as a risk and many asked how it would impact others, imagine where we'd be now if we didn't have them.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
