BHX have been speaking to Finnair for 25 years !

Well if that's the case, then why do BHX even bother to keep talking to Finnair, its pretty obvious that after 25 years of talking they are not interested in serving BHX!! :ROFLMAO: Time they moved on and started chatting to other airlines, I look forward to our next new airline being announced in 2045!!

Maybe explains why Birmingham is in the state it is, and 25 years behind the rest of the UK regional airports :banghead:

Hi there all, as I have said before with easyJet, unless Birmingham Airport management wakes up and listens to what easyJet wants and does a deal that is acceptable for both parties, then it will be

Which airports? Because from where I'm sitting BHX has an impressive list of airlines serving it.

Same reason that Rotterdam doesn't, same reason Cologne doesn't, same reason that Antwerp doesn't etc etc. These are all large and wealthy European cities with their own airports, within easy driving distance of much larger intercontinental airports (Amsterdam/Dusseldorf/Brussels).

Hi there Jerry, if Birmingham has an array of airlines serving it, why doesn't it have a direct link to the USA .
It does TUI Orlando flight but it doesn't need to have direct flights to the USA to be a busy successful airport with a good list of carriers that provide global links. I think we do tend to obsess about the flights to the USA too much as if an airport can only be doing well if it has flights to New York.

Exactly Ash, its the same old fact that Birmingham is bang between London and Manchester and is squeezed out as the airlines know people will travel to the latter two.

New York has been tried at least five times from BHX firstly by BOAC in the 1970s and then in more modern times by Continental/United, BA, American and Primera all failed although United was a particular disappointment as their withdrawal was more of a wider company policy change.

BHX needs to be realistic and concentrate on getting back its lost European routes above all which is a real task given the current state of things ie Covid, Brexit not to mention the fact airlines are concentrating on remaining in business rather than expansion.

Best hope for Brum for the the next few years ‐ three things - EasyJet, EasyJet and EasyJet.

The sad thing is, in 2016 when both United and American operated NYC to BHX, the two airlines carried almost 150,000 passengers between them. That's about 200 a day in each direction, equating to an 83% LF on United's 787-8's - hardly a failure!

It's been said before, but get a good airline, with a good product and market it well, and there's no reason BHX - NYC can't be successful.

Sadly the transatlantic market has moved on and is only interested in serving London, Manchester & Scotland.

Also don't forget the GBP/USD rate has basically never recovered since it crashed in 2008. For London this doesn't really matter as the traffic is balanced and flowing both ways but BHX is driven mostly by UK based outbound travellers making the US much less appealing price-wise than it once was.

Hi there all, unfortunately for Birmingham Airport, the deal they offer easyJet will not come any near to what they want, so they will walk away, with Birmingham Airport left empty handed.

I wouldn't discount easyJet just yet! A few years ago they only served 2 destinations, 1 of which was seasonal. They now serve 5!

By seats, easyJet is now BHX's 4th largest carrier, and largest carrier without a base!

But, what might the cost be of giving Easyjet the 'deal' that they want? I would guess that in order to create a base at BHX Easyjet would want costs to be virtually zero along with access to major routes such as Frankfurt, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam etc. How would the flag carriers respond to that? The last thing that BHX needs is to lose the likes of Lufthansa, Air France and KLM. Although we can't be certain, we've seen the effect of a low cost carrier (Primera) on the likes of United, American and Icelandair who all quit BHX soon after Primera announced their routes.
Easyjet offer point to point routes. The flag carriers offer that, along with excellent onward connections.

I think back into day BA paid BHX £25 per passenger and Ryanair still just about pay !
I understand easyjet pay nothing at Gatwick and some airport pay them !
So I would imagine BHX would be similar 'you pay us to come'

But we are not going to grow much more with these current airlines Jez and that;s the issue, we have stagnated and based on our existing airlines stuck under 12.5 million imho forever ??

We need fresh blood :)

Yes BHX needs to build on them and the likeliest candidate is Easyjet but it still doesn't negate the fact that BHX has a good list of mainline european carriers which other airports would kill for! I also think if BHX secure an Easyjet base you can then almost guarentee Ryanair will expand and Wizz will probably look at a base!

easyJet is downsizing a few of its italian bases so we will have to wait and see what happens. If they are using fewer aircraft maybe we might get away with a re-time or days may change. Of course it could be gone too but the amount of routes not currently available across different airports makes it look like it is still very much work in progress.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
