So there’s extra frequencies to Alicante , Malaga, faro , murcia , lanzarote , Zante and the Isle of Man plus the return of Mykonos. Surprisingly no Malta , nor jersey or Aberdeen . The airport has now released a press release with the news of aircraft no 18.
There is a post on another forum saying that in summer 22 easyJet is 'stepping up their game' on Aberdeen-London, with Manchester also returning at 4/5 weekly, but no BRS.

Loganair will no doubt be happy if they have no competition on BRS-ABZ as will Blue Islands on BRS-JER. At present it seems these easyJet routes were put in for summer 21 when overseas routes were not possible to many places.

No Malta. Very odd. Not so long ago three airlines were competing.

Is it 17 or 18? The press release on the airport website says 17.

There were 18 either in summer 2019 or planned for summer 2020 - I forget which.

easyJet base at BRS

S19
- 17x based aircraft
7x A319
10x A320

S22 - 17x based aircraft
3x A319
12x A320
2x A321
That makes 2952 seats in 2019 and 3170 in 2022, an increase of 7.4%.

BRS has been increasing its annual passenger numbers each year in the 21st Century, except for 2009 (recession) and 2020 (pandemic). It has done so without increasing the number of air transport movements pro rata.

For example, the airport's annual monitoring report shows 5.199 million passengers in 2005 from 84,289 air transport movements and 8,959 million passengers in 2019 from 69,534 air transport movements. Larger aircraft and higher load factors are the reason.

easyJet has been a main contributor to this pattern having begun at the airport with 149-seat Boeing 737s, then 156-seat A319s followed by a gradual replacement of the 319s by A320s (which underwent an increase in seating capacity from 180 to 186) and now A321s with 235 seats are appearing.

It's something the airport has used to combat environmental propaganda but the committed environmentalists give it little if any credence.

An easyJet A320 flying from Jersey to Glasgow this afternoon encountered a problem and landed safely at Bristol Airport.

I was walking on the eastern edge of south Bristol about eight miles from BRS around the time the incident occurred and I heard a very loud and unusual whining noise above in the overcast. The noise seemed to be moving in a north-easterly direction but I couldn't see the source because of the cloud base. My immediate thought was an aircraft in difficulty although the noise didn't sound anything like a normal jet engine.

A look at FR24 shows the track of G-EZUK as flying over BRS from the west before executing a 360 degree left-hand circuit to the north of the airport, then a tear-shaped right-hand 180 degree turn in order to line up and land on runway 27. I'm assuming the noise I heard was the aircraft flying the first part of the tear-shaped manoeuvre towards North Common and Wick on the eastern edge of the northern part of the Bristol conurbation.

Loads of new routes from other uk airports but nothing from Bristol
Might be the Jet2 effect (Ryanair haven't added much either). Might be the uncertainty over the airport's future passenger limit. Might be the fact that for an airport of its size BRS has a huge array of easyJet routes already. Might be a bit of all or some of these things.

Had the pandemic not come along the number of aircraft already at the airport would have seen it close to its current planning cap of 10 mppa. It was through 9 mppa in February 202 pre-Covid and that was pre-Jet2.

A well-known aviation analytical website calculated last year that BRS was easyJet's third most profitable base. The post-Covid aviation scene might be a different animal but it's hard to believe that the catchment will not still provide a very acceptable yield to airlines.

Uncertainly is the bane of many things in life and still not knowing whether the airport will be allowed to expand throws something else into the BRS mix. Even if the appeal is rejected at least the airport and its customer airlines will know where they stand.

Having a quick look at Mondays from June looks like 18 aircraft needed for the first wave

18 was the number that appeared to be required for summer 2020 before the pandemic kicked in. A number of flights were also operated by aircraft from the base at the other end of the route, particularly EDI and GLA, and no doubt will continue to do so this year.

If it is to be 18 this summer there would almost certainly be more seats because there are fewer 319s in the fleet this year. 18 would also suggest that easyJet expects the main part of the summer (at least) to be heading back to pre-pandemic normality. That of course can only be hopeful speculation as not even airline managements can have an accurate idea of that.

Interestingly with the extra flights there is not one new destination announced yet. Unusual for easyJet - even last year saw new routes to santorini and Mykonos

There were also the short-notice routes to Malta, Aberdeen and Jersey last summer which don't appear to be coming back this summer (I wonder how much the last two affected Loganair and Blue Islands respectively who have been loyal to these routes through the pandemic).

The only Malta operation is the new Jet2 weekly service from the end of May.

Ryanair seem to have really given up on Malta from BRS, CWL and EXT. Ryanair's BOH-MLA also seems to have gone this summer as does the airline's LBA-MLA. It seems that BHX, EMA, EDI, LPL, MAN, LTN and STN are the only Ryanair UK airports serving MLA this summer.

Perhaps surprising then that easyJet didn't try MLA again this summer, unless something has happened at the Malta end to reduce the island's popularity for airlines and tour companies (in addition to the pandemic effects which have affected most destinations).

I've been reading the news in the CWL forum that Vueling is increasing its frequency to Paris Orly and I decided to check on easyJet's BRS-ORY. I was very surprised to learn that easyJet operates over 20 routes from ORY but the BRS route is the only one to the UK - there aren't even any to London.

It operates daily, albeit currently reduced, complementing easyJet's daily BRS-CDG route (also currently reduced) that is due to operate up to 10 x weekly later this year.

I've submitted a post in the easyJet Airlines thread (see below link) suggesting that the airline is to 'pour capacity' into the UK this year. This quarter will see two-thirds of pre-pandemic seating capacity across the airline with summer seating numbers back to 'near normal' levels.

It remains to be seen to what degree or even if BRS will benefit.

Further to my previous post the local rag carries this story today in its business section.

Key points are:

78 routes from BRS, their largest ever range.

BRS operating 17 easyJet aircraft this summer.

Eight new routes from BRS - what are they? (my italics).*

Significant growth in demand for easyJet Holidays.

Aggressive growth plans for the coming winter and summer 2023 of which Bristol is a 'core' part.

* I make it only 74 routes on the web booking engine and some of those are winter only.
