LBA still in the very fortunate position of having made a great recovery from the pandemic. This recovery may have taken management a little by surprise and may be why it appears we are playing infrastructure catch up. Will definitely take where we are today than where we were 2 to 3 years ago and I think the future is looking brighter and brighter

Yes things are looking great at LBA regarding passenger figures and flights, but for goodness sake will the airport just get something bloody built!! Its never ending!
Regards apron space If say for example wizz were happy with the airport and wanted to up their operations at LBA quite substantially, lets say to around the levels of the current ryanair ops then the airport is pretty screwed, and also howmuch apron expansion is planned, are we talking just 2 or 3 more stands?

The Aussie company that own LBA wouldn't sign off the capital expenditure to carry out the works until such time as they were certain that the airport had recovered sufficiently to justify it. The same would certainly have applied to the new terminal too. So the management weren't caught out, they had no choice but to wait until passenger numbers reached a critical point and approval was given.

Why not look at the plans so you can see that quite a lot is planned, but in phases, as and when needed. My post above explains why they have had to wait to start building and I've already explained the tender process previously (including today).

I'm wondering what effect recent events in Turkey will have on bookings. I'm assuming they will drop but hopefully with a corresponding increase to other destinations.

My concern is for the victims and the families of those effected by this terrible disaster in Turkey and Syria. It's already reported that over 4,500 have died and the toll could reach 10,000.
Compared to that, how it's going to effect peoples holiday plans is trivial.

Totally agree that first and foremost all our thoughts should be with the friends and families of the victims. Unfortunately though once any sort of bad news events happens in any country it can have a detrimental effect on tourism, so even though the tourist resorts are well to the west, I would expect some slow down and wariness in the short term. I think things will pick up again soon though which would need to happen due to the extended/increased capacity now on offer

The western areas are not affected. If they were it could also affect Kos, Rhodes and other Greek islands too who are very near Turkey.

It probably have little to no effect. After all it’s February.

I don't think some people look into the facts- they just see Turkey. The news reports are all saying "earthquakes are not unusual in Turkey" which isn't going to help, but as you say it is only February.

Yes, but this is an airport forum and I just wanted to keep it in context.

It’s the very eastern side, which if people do a quick google they will see where it’s affecting. Also the news is emphasising that it’s not just Turkey but Syria I very much doubt it’ll affect them. Not even close to any of the resorts Jet2 and TUI serve.

When Kos and Bodrum had an earthquake in 2017 around July time, just before British peak it did very little to people visiting and numbers. It was a 6.6.

Whilst a 6.6 is quite a strong earthquake, the 7.8 that Turkey and Syria suffered is over 10 times as strong. The Richter Scale is a base 10 logarithmic (or exponential) scale. 2 on the Richter Scale is 10 times more powerful than a 1. 3 on the Richter Scale is 10 times more powerful than a 2 and therefore 100 x more powerful than a 1. So, a 7.8 is going to do significantly more damage than a 6.6.

It’s really sad news for this part of Turkey and Syria, let’s hope the people get the assistance they need to support them after this event.

Reality for Joe Public for any holiday is base cost, where’s the pubs, is it all inclusive and will I get a tan. Safety and security, often come very low down the hierarchy where holidays are concerned, just like peoples inhibitions and behaviour changes for some when abroad.
I doubt bookings will significantly be impacted, the distance of resorts to these affected regions is quite far. Bodrum to Gazientep is similar to London to Prague- just shy of 800 miles.

The largest resort thats nearest to the affected earthquake areas is antalya and thats still around 250-300miles. Turkey is a pretty long length country, probably due to its tectonic plates, a bit similar to italy in a way.
Over here in our little uk its hard to imagine the horrors of an earthquake, whole towns just flattened in a matter of minutes.

The reality is that most if the places we go for our holidays abroad are Earthquake zones. Italy, Greece, Turkey and even Spain and Portugal are areas where Earthquakes occur regularly. The Iberian peninsular tends to have frequent quakes of lower magnitude, but, they have in the past had very bad quakes, notably at Lisbon and Seville. Another is always a possibility.

Italy has had major quakes in recent years and just to keep things interesting, has Europe's two largest and most active volcanoes too.

The Greek Islands are all prone to Earthquakes, and some of those have been big ones too. Kefalonia had a bad one not long after WW2.

Turkey is a huge country but the East and West are both very prone to major quakes. Istanbul is on a major fault line and a quake there is highly likely at some time, but the standard if buildings is much higher than in the East where building them Quake proof isn't a priority if it's considered at all.

The reality is, if we booked our holidays to avoid places that might have an Earthquake while we are there, then there aren't many places left to go.

Yes one major fault line is the sierra nevada mountain range that extends from andalucia in southern spain, around the back of the murcian and costa blanca region, where it climbs again out of the med is the islands of ibiza, majorca and menorca, those islands are more or less the tops of the mountains!
So yes millions of us holiday in earthquake zones with many overseas properties located in them too.

I think WE all understand this. People aren't rational though. They believe there's a risk and avoid it.

That’s a typical bog standard reply they’ve given you. I’ve never seen much positivity from them. They’ve always been on the negative side of stuff regarding the airport. Obviously saying that to keep you happy and satisfied that they’re not anti airport when they clearly are.
@LBAYORKIE is probably their only reader.

Like him or not Andy Burnham does get things done and gets the money to do them, he’s got political clout. Meanwhile Tracey Breadbin is a political lightweight and all we get on this side of the Pennines are the crumbs falling from the top table. Her lack of support for the new airport terminal and the economic benefits it would have brought to the whole region was a disgrace.
I'm not aware of ANYTHING this woman has actually done for West Yorkshire. Any ideas?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
