What six remote stands?

IMG-0863.jpg

The 1st images in c2015 were 3 piers, 1 no pier (forgot what they call it) and no Pier C.
Numerous images appeared with every variation!
I think someone created their own utopia with 6 piers.

Anyway, we're down to 2 as the FINAL stage and a massive Ramstein ramp area.

I have to say that with only 2 piers on T2, 24 contact stands doesn't sound an awful lot for a Terminal when complete that could handle 25m-30m passengers a year. (even if flexibility could enable 2 narrow bodied a/c on some stands). As I recall, MAN originally stated that the airport would end up with a higher proportion of contact stands than before, but that was when 3 Piers were definitely in the Plan. Not sure about the possible Pier 4. The 12 or 13 stands on Pier B will become remote as I understand it with a question mark over Pier C.

It's appreciated that many large airports use remote parking stands extensively, but I still think it's legitimate to question the balance between contact and non-contact. I hope a third pier may come back into consideration as the airport continues to grow. Then there's always a possibility that something may eventually be done to expand Terminal 3.

I guess loss of 2 years pax and growth, and the economic strife since means that the accounts can't cope with pier 3 for now.
It’s no secret that even before Covid they got the budgets hopelessly wrong. Big discussion about it by some who know more than me earlier in the thread. Remember the lofty ambitions of a glass roof? Indoor foliage? Expanded legacy MSCP? Ramp from M56?

Makes you wonder how they were able/afford to do a better job at least externally when they built the orginal T2. No idea I might add if that went over budget, I'm a little too young to remember.

IIRC, Legacy T2 was delivered under budget by Geoff Muirhead and his team. He was subsequently rewarded with the Manchester Airport CEO role. The funds saved were used to construct the Skylink.

I am 39 and remember when T2 first opened in 1993 and for the time how modern it was, with plenty of glass used!
Now these days when a new terminal is built (in the UK at least it seems) they’re done on the cheap with crap materials that aren’t designed to last!
I don’t think this should be allowed, when constructing something the size of an airport terminal which has to last many years, there should be no room or even possibility for error and the highest quality of materials should be used, I am sick of this buy and build cheaply attitude we have these days in the UK! Especially given the costs of constantly repairing broken things or replacing tiles, toilets etc.
The contrast between what we had in 1993 compared to now, 30 years later is quite stark!

It was under. So much under budget it also paid for the glass cover at the (free) drop off plus Skylink 1.

Legacy T2 was such a wonderful experience in 1993. Before the clutter and penny pinching

It was Skylink 1 or the T2 MSCP. I don’t recall which exactly! Either way, the saved cash was ploughed back into customer facilities. T2s budget back then was around £265m if I remember correctly.

From online photo’s, it looks like phase 2 is in full swing!
In regards to the 2nd pier and the dual taxiway system, with work being done on the taxiway between the ATC tower and pier C at T1

Latest image from the manairportuk instagram account today. Remote parking where Pier 3 would have been and C Pier still looking operational...

I'm not sure anyone really knows what the end state will be...

Many thanks Rudney for posting that image. It does look very, very similar to that posted by the airport a good few months ago - I'll try looking an earlier dated image. See post #1269 dated 21st June by #Marni 1971.

Is there any news to as if T1 is closing or there being any improvements to the dreaded T3?

It's already been confirmed by the airport management online that T1 will close once the current T2 refurb is completed and the 2nd pier opens. This is on schedule and is expected around Q2/3 of 2025.

As for T3, the security area will be expanded in preparation for the new security equipment, which has to be put in place by June 2024.
There are plans for further improvements within the departure lounge area in the future, but I would assume any major changes would happen after T2 is complete, in order to balance the budget.
Ryanair will be the only airline customer in T3 from the summer of 2025.

Can you provide any further info on the T3 security area expansion and improvements within the departure lounge (i.e. plans etc)?

The image below shows the new extended security area in T3, it will need to be completed prior to June 2024 when the government requirement comes into place for the new security equipment across UK airports.

As for the departure lounge etc, I have no concrete info, just what is being looked at post the completion of T2 in 2025

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
