I don't think we can ignore the impact of exchange rates. Airports like BHX and MAN rely primarily on UK originating passengers. Some months ago, the pound seemed to be rebounding a bit and briefly reached $1.31 to £1. Today it's nearer $1.22 and has been sliding steadily recently. This is only 1 factor, but it can certainly affect demand and the cost of a holiday, especially for leisure travellers.

Maybe the pound will recover, but as things stand, I really can't see much development for either airport on services to the US. For those who do choose to go, there are limited services from MAN but multiple options through LHR or DUB. I wish I could be more optimistic for both airports and would be delighted to be proved wrong.

When I flew to New York last year I flew from LHR. If Birmingham does get flights to New York it would only get 1 airline max. If this is a US Carrier it would probably be we will say JetBlue at around 9AM meaning you would have to wake up at say 5AM have breakfast and get to BHX at 7AM. If you to LHR you have BA, AA, DL, VS and JB all with better flight time options Even up the M6 at MAN you have VS and EI all with better flight time options than what would you would get at BHX. My flight from LHR was BA173 I believe the 2nd or 3rd flight of BA's to JFK at 10:40 or 11:40. Now the only benefit I could see is if you have Kids or Teenagers or young Adults like myself, I hate the journey back when I'm tired. If I was organising a trip to NY I would stop in a hotel on my way back. As I have a routine and Falling asleep at 8PM when I'm back at home Is not part of it. So in that regards to Save a long journey with Crankey Kids or Teens you could fly into BHX and be home within half an hour to an hour. I do hope we get US Flights but I can see at first why we aren't a priority.

I'm loving some of this its better than the entertainment on the telly so please take the first bit as light heartedly meant (mostly)

Someone would like a Toronto service because there mom has got a friend there Eh! meanwhile another a service to the USA required to fit in with bedtime and breakfast routines. The airlines are missing a trick or two there. If only the airlines would do their research properly and take this stuff into their calculations they'd be queuing up to fly the Atlantic from BHX.

Meanwhile back on planet earth Land23R makes some valid points which airlines would actually take into consideration and I'm sure the BHX route development team are continually talking to potential airlines as has previously been mentioned by others to get a US or Canada route(s) on the books but easier said than done.

Actually the airport overall seems to be doing fine and by all accounts with more good news in the pipeline.

Personally transatlantic would be great but really we need the EasyJet base to get up and running and grow a really significant operation at BHX.

JET2 did in short order and yes I know the demise of Monarch in particular helped them plus TCX.
but they did the same at STN and now at BRS with LPL next in line.

Really confused me when you say “not interested”. It’s not exaggeration, they just don’t see the potential or an agreement with the airport.
United haven’t been interested since 2017. Still can’t be persuaded to even return MAN

American strategy is to feed their JV partners so obviously only LHR

Delta dont fly wide bodies across the Atlantic so largely incompatible for BHX and MAN (too premium heavy)

BHX will be talking to all US / Canadian airlines but it is convincing one of them to come to BHX.
I was in Toronto on Tuesday and for me the obvious one is Air Transat with their fleet of A321NEOS
Our ward air flights did very well pax wise but it was only 1 a week & on a Tuesday- the problem is extra cost incl that of crewing this - in the end it was more cost effective for the airline to move flight to LGW

I leave the forum for 24 hours, and what do i miss?

The ghost of Paul Kehoe rises on the 'testing the water' with China, then the exhileration of actual flight to China, but with a 'twist'.

Almost immediately it is three flights a week and awooooooooa from BHX. But that's not all, we then have the thought there may be flights to Toronto for someone's aunty... Good times they are acoming...

And then, the bubble burst!!

The flights, which were be be cargo, are actualky going to Stansted.

The tension, the drama - just like watching the Baggies....kkkk

I suppose anything will be better than nothing and great for the spotters. At the end of the day up until 2 weeks ago, the talk of Air China @ BHX would of been for the fairies, now it sounds like something is on its way, possibly ?

I have a feeling it will be a series of charter flights like a few years ago. To test the market, loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
This is BHX an awful lot can go wrong before a service starts.
So until Air China actually labds lands I have to remain sceptical I'm afraid
As it stands US3 not interested in UK regional

JetBlue a possibility, but beyond 2025 now
Interesting that Jet Blue are now operating smaller business class cabin 321Ns out of LGW now 12 as apposed to the original 26.

This would be s good option for BHX.Yet I believe MAN are ahead of us in Jet Blues plans..

Looks like a quite a bit of BHX news coming soon :)
This is BHX and we have a thick book of things that can go wrong at the last minute for anything new.

Although Saudia was a nice near seamless surprise addition.

So unfortunately until anything new and significant actually lands at BHX I will remain very cautious.

Looks like China Cargo flights will not be coming to BHX now as they have now secured their first airport choice !
Surely not 🙄

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
