Winter is now showing 2 of the three MUC flights as operated by A319. LH2512/3 and LH2508/9 are A319 with just LH2510/1 showing as the E195.

Frankfurt is showing as 3x A320 and 1x A321.

Munich is now showing as all A319 from January.

Obviously Lufthansa are very flexible so anything from an E190 to an A321 could be used.

Great to see MUC having the bigger jets just like FRA

The Lufthansa pilots strike (which will hopefully end on Saturday) has led to cancellations across the board. That includes Birmingham--I wonder if they'll send in a heavy to take on the backlog of passengers or is that asking too much?

This week nearly all of the morning flights were to be A321s so it would have been a busy week it seems :(

I'd love to see one but I don't think it will happen. Many customers will have been refunded with others most likely rerouted via other Star Alliance partners, even Flybe could have possibly taken some?

Lufthansa's morning flight from FRA has seen A321s all week (apart from Sunday). The late afternoon flight from MUC has seen A321s used for a few consecutive days now, and the night stopping MUC has been an A320 for a few days as well :cigar:

Look what's first on the connections list once again.

Lufthansa closes in on three quarters of a million passengers a year at Birmingham Airport

The Lufthansa Group airlines achieved another passenger record for Birmingham in 2015 with 737,000 people travelling to and from the West Midlands – an increase of five and a half per cent on 2014.

The figures released today show that half of the passengers leaving Birmingham Airport on airlines in the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Swiss and Brussels airlines) take advantage of the quick and easy onward connections to the airline’s worldwide network through their Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Brussels hubs.

Christian Schindler, Lufthansa’s Regional Director UK, Ireland & Iceland, said: “Once again Birmingham has proved to be a key market within the Lufthansa group network. Despite a challenging last quarter of the year the demand for our services has continued to grow proving once again that discerning travellers appreciate the way Lufthansa continues to respond to the challenges of the travel market.

“Our passengers know that when they book with the Lufthansa Group they are guaranteed to receive our high quality on-board services. The Lufthansa Group recently introduced price concept for flights in Europe offer Economy Class fare options “Light”, “Classic” and “Flex“ allowing passengers to select and only pay for the services they want. In addition, the large number of Birmingham passengers who take onward connections have the option to take advantage of our high quality premium economy product on long-haul services. And we will continue to offer our Birmingham passengers the shortest possible onward connection times to our worldwide network through our hubs of Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Brussels.”

In 2015 the most popular onward destinations for Lufthansa’s Birmingham travellers included Vienna, Graz, Prague, Shanghai, Johannesburg and Budapest.

Overall, the full service airlines in the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS and Brussels Airlines) continue to be among the leading carriers at Birmingham Airport.

Vienna is ripe for the taking. I don't know what Austrian's presence at MAN does for the chances of them starting a service here, but I think Eurowings (a Lufthansa subsidiary, remember) are worth keeping an eye on. They're growing their Vienna base and already have one UK route (to Stansted).

I see no reason why a 2 weekly A320 operation, rising to 3 weekly if loads are good (similar to Wizz on WAW and BUD) shouldn't work.

I wonder what is driving the traffic to Graz, it seems to consistently rank highly on the LH connections yet is a small relatively unheard of city and completely unserved from the UK.

That's a pretty upbeat message from Christian Schindler re Lufthansa and its services from BHX. But if you will forgive the 'pun' I would really like to know where this puts is in his 'list'??

And by that i mean, in percentage terms, is BHX a rising star within Lufthansa's route structure or are we performing very much in line with other European and UK airports, notably Man.

I am sure the figures are out there somewhere. It would be good to know...

I think Lufthansa have been one of the most consistent in the UK market over the years. Birmingham seems to be broadly in line with elsewhere, relatively speaking. When you look at how Munich is doing, with plenty of A321's, then it's hard to believe that it was an Embraer only a few months ago.

The article below is from 2012 which shows LH were doing well back then.

Motor industry connections put Birmingham Airport top for Lufthansa

The thriving automotive sector in the West Midlands has helped German airline Lufthansa achieve record passenger levels at Birmingham Airport.

Birmingham Airport was top UK performer for growth in 2012 for Lufthansa, following an increase of around 21 per cent to an all-time high annual total of over 586,000.

Christian Schindler, the airline’s general manager UK and Ireland, said the West Midlands car industry, with Jaguar Land Rover creating thousands of new jobs at the Jaguar plant at Castle Bromwich and Land Rover at Solihull, was playing a key role in the substantial passenger rise.

“It has been a buoyant but challenging market but we have fared much better than the market," he said. "Birmingham saw 21 per cent passenger growth compared to 2011.

“The Birmingham market likes Lufthansa and Lufthansa likes the Birmingham market. Most of the traffic is from the UK to Germany, with Frankfurt and Munich the most popular routes.

“You have the connections between the two powerhouses of Europe, UK and Germany, and there is a lot of contact between German and British industry.”

Mr Schindler said the car industry was a key factor in the passenger growth from Birmingham, particularly to the likes of Germany and Austria.

“I would say that this is down to automotive. We have a lot of small to medium-sized firms in Germany that supply big firms. Our corporate travel can only flourish if business is working – if business is not working, there is no travel.

“It proves our commitment to Birmingham was fully justified when we added services to Hamburg and Berlin during 2012.

“As well as offering passengers easy access to many of the main German cities, we continue to ensure that our flights to and from Birmingham offer the shortest possible onward connection times to our worldwide network through our hubs of Frankfurt and Munich.

“Our most popular onward destinations for passengers from Birmingham include Jeddah, Delhi, Beijing, Moscow, Johannesburg.”

MAN has had a very similar article in the past few days, to which LH were quouted as MAN growing 2.5% to 982,000 passengers carried. I expect this to rise this year with the first full year of Austrian, more A321's on MUC and a 4th daily A319 to Brussels.

Although it is relatively unheard of in the UK, it's the second biggest city in Austria and its airport currently handles around 1mppa. It's a nice modern facility and a base for airberlin subsidiary Niki.

Graz is one of the destinations for the AN-12 cargo charters handled by BHX, although those have been getting slightly rarer of late. Since the charters are usually for the automotive industry, I imagine that would be one reason for connections.

I used to fly to Graz a lot to get to Slovenia. Nice city, great airport actually too.

This article briefly appeared on the airport website but was then removed. As it's not an official press release I've only copied a snippet.

Lufthansa flying high after 30 years at Birmingham

“On 1st April 1986 Lufthansa arrived at Birmingham providing 13 flights a week, with a daily Frankfurt service operated with a Boeing 737 aircraft and a six day a week service to Düsseldorf using a 28 seat Embraer 120 Brasilia aircraft. Today the Lufthansa Group offers 82 flights a week and we are using bigger aircraft.

“Almost half of the passengers flying with Lufthansa Group airlines from Birmingham are continuing to take advantage of our quick and easy onward connections. Our Birmingham figures for the first three months of this year are showing an 86.7 per cent increase to North America and 42.7 per cent increase to South America. The most popular onward destinations with our Birmingham passengers include Prague, Graz, Budapest, Johannesburg, Beijing, Shanghai and Milan."

I wonder what the small Austrian town of Graz has that attracts so many brummies??? Intersting to see Prague and Budapest on that list, now that they are both served direct from BHX. Be interesting to see how those figures hold up in coming years

My theory is that it could be connected to the motor industry because Graz has been one of the destinations for the AN-12 cargo charters over the years.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
