Don't forget the the over reliance for whatever reasons on British Airways. This seemed to stunt growth for many years. It could be argued the airport has done well to maintain its passenger figures and now start to grow them after the lose of by far it's biggerts arline at the time.

I think that we're only just starting to see a recovery from this.

Not embracing the loco revolution was a big mistake, just imagine what a huge base Easyjet may have had by now if BHX had done the deal with them.

Things have definitely got better in recent years with Ryanair finally growing along with the additions of Wizz, Norwegian and Vueling. Of course not forgetting Jet2 who are the shining light at the moment. There is still much to do though, I just look at EMA and wonder if we'll ever get back the likes of Pisa, Riga, Split, Bergamo and Valencia.

I don't wholly agree that the failure of BHX to embrace the LCC revolution was a big mistake, especially after reading what EMA followers have to say about it on other forums.

EMA welcomed the LCC's with open arms, but as a result it lost global connections through the European hubs in favour of point-to-point LCC traffic. EMA followers aren't happy with the way the large LCC operation at EMA annihilated all the competition. For example Aer Lingus were unable to build EMA-DUB up to a point where they could make best use of onward connections before Ryanair strangled them on fares. I think the same applies to LPL which is another LCC-centric airport.

BHX focused on keeping its legacy carrier base happy and saving up for the new pier, tower and runway extension, and it seems to have been the better long-term strategy. With the infrastructure taken care of, BHX can offer the "new breed" of LCC's deals EMA can't offer for fear EMA's existing LCC's will throw their toys out of the pram.

BHX didn't build up a large LCC base to start off with, so it has the space for growth from new LCC's on multiple routes without disturbing the established base of legacy carriers.

Hi there ray and all, regarding my earlier post about Birminghams passenger numbers, from what the airport says that it can handle, to what it's handling at present, I think regarding growth at Birmingham is going great, but to achieve the levels that bhx management want is going to take years and a long time to achieve twenty three million passengers in the next twenty years at least or more, but if you want to look at great success story, then look no further than at Manchester Airport, their structure and planning is the type of system that Birmingham needs to adopt if it constantly wants consistent growth maintained for the next thirty years plus, for instance landing fees of charges play a major factor in any airline choosing or wanting to fly from an airport, so if Manchester Airport is charging £1,845 for any aircraft size to land and take off, then per passenger of £5.50 in summer and £6.00 in the winter, and is able to secure airlines with this kind of deal, then you come to Birmingham airport that charges £4,000 per aircraft to land and take off, then £11.50 per passenger, or as Mr Kehoe reply to me sometime last year, it depends on load factor of £10.00 of per part tonne, or I'm intrigued to know why you are asking me for this information, then you wonder why Manchester is more successful than Birmingham airport is...Andyc

Wow. That is a suicidal difference in charges. Not surprising Manchester is doing so well and Easyjet are not keen on BHX.

BHX must be offering the same sort of deals to Jet 2 4 and Ryanair.
If price no longer becomes a factor and it comes down to accessibility and the airport experience then EMA
has a lot to worry about. How would they respond? Can they? They do have the M.A.G behind them.

I also get the impression those figures are either historic, outdated, and/or inaccurate ...the likes of Vueling, Norwegian, Wizz and now Jet2 certainly wouldn't have come to BHX if they were the case!

Swings and roundabouts I suppose. Birmingham's list of full service carriers is certainly one to be proud of and definitely not something to be sniffed at.

On the other hand, after BMIBaby went, for how long did we have no services to Madrid, Lisbon, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Stockholm.......? It has mainly been the likes of Wizz, Blue Air, Ryanair, Monarch etc that have been filling the gaps over the last couple of years and in turn boosting the passenger numbers.

Don't get me wrong, I am very proud of the list of airlines that we have but if we're expecting 13 million next year and even more for the years to follow then I'd say it will be the loco's that will be the main driving force behind that growth.

I guess we should think ourselves lucky that we have a decent balance :)

Birmingham Airport has seen over a million passengers pass through its terminal for another month making October its twentieth consecutive month of record breaking growth.
In total 1,074,242 passengers were recorded travelling through the airport, up by 16.7% compared to the same month last year – equivalent to over 154,000 more passengers.

Short haul saw the most significant passenger growth rates for the month up by 16.8% year-on-year compared to long haul which increased by 14.4%. This is due to a large percentage of travellers being those going on business trips and half term breaks.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “It’s great to see that we have gone through the autumn season and are entering the busy winter season still delivering month-on-month passenger records.

“October was our sixth consecutive month in which we have served over a million passengers in a single month. We expect this positive trend to continue as we enter the Christmas holiday period.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for over 91% of the total passenger volume for October and saw a 22.3% growth rate compared to the same month last year. Charter traffic accounted for 9% of the total.

Caribbean, European and Middle Eastern destinations saw the greatest increase in passengers compared to the same month last year.

Scheduled destinations with significant year-on-year passenger growth were Madrid (+323.5%), Heraklion (+135.5%), Gran Canaria (+86.3%) and Palma de Mallorca (+80.9%).

Charter destinations with significant growth were Kos (+149.4%), Fuerteventura (+119.1%) and Hurghada (+66.8%).

I think judging by statement below it should be friday copied from CAA website.

The next scheduled refresh of airport publications will be 11 November 2016.

2 months left to go.....At +13.49% as an average yearly growth rate, we will be looking at BHX ending the year circa 11,575,000 pax

The increasr in October this year over last year was greater than any month in 1977. Great figures once again.

Scotland's busiest airport, owned by private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners, notes a total of 1,129,720 passengers passed through its terminals in October, up 12.5% on last year.

Can't image that anyone other than Luton would have a larger % increase than BHX this month.

12.7 million pax predicted for 2017, can the infrastructure cope with that amount?

It'll be interesting to see how the investment happening over the winter will improve things.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
