Re: Infrastructure Developments

I have a Boeing produced PDF chart showing comparable field lengths for almost all aircraft operating under the same conditions which seem to be MTOW because the 737-300 requires 3000m.
Unfortunately I don't know how to post as an attachment.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Thanks for the reply White Heather regarding," are Bridgepoint aware on the runway not been long enough"?.
I was having a browse via Google and typed in the words "expansion plans for Leeds and Bradford Airport". One site came up

here

This was dated back in January 2007, but if you scroll down the page to The Airport Masterplan it shows you a diagram of possible future runway extension & aircraft parking apron. Does any body know if one day the runway was to be extended, how much more of an extension would it be?. I am aware that Bridgepoint have no plans at mo to do this, money reasons probably?
Aviador-Traveller came up with some could suggestions for routes out of LBA, Las Vegas is a good one for the future. Would probably need the runway extension tho, lol

Re: Infrastructure Developments

A three hundred metre runway extension was mentioned in the Govrnment white paper for Leeds.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Thanks for that gardener - is there an expirey date on the Government white paper for LBA to do this or is it when Bridgepoint consider extending the runway, the option is there?
It would be intresting to see what options it would open up for both routes and aircraft to come to LBA if the runway was extended.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Welcome to Forums4airports 'Traveller' and 'T67A' if I haven't already welcomed you before.

In an ideal situation, every major UK city would have it's own Intercontinental airport offering flights around the world. In reality the UK's population isn't large enough to sustain more than about three major airports with flights to destinations around the globe. People can knock LBA for offering too many European routes and not enough longer haul routes but if that's where people want to fly then so be it.

Airports such as Manchester and Birmingham have long wished to increase their range of long haul routes with little success so why would Leeds be any different? Over the last two years Manchester airport has lost numerous long haul services such as the BMI to Las Vagas & St Lucia, the BA service to New York. The list goes on and on...

Manchester long haul flights ‘use them or lose them’

The commercial director of Manchester Airport warned travellers in the north to use long-haul flights from the airport or risk seeing them disappear. Andrew Harrison said their motto should be ‘use it or lose it’.

As many as 50% of people flying to Dubai from the north are travelling down to Heathrow to catch flights rather than using scheduled flights from Manchester, Mr Harrison told a conference of business leaders and flight executives at the airport.

How can you expect Leeds to fair any better if airports such as Manchester are struggling? Airlines need to consider whether or not a route would be viable in the first place. They may ask questions like "how many people from the Leeds & Bradford catchment area travel to say to Las Vagas each year?" Would such service be viable from Leeds even with an extended runway? The answer is not enough to support an operation at both Leeds & Manchester. Perhaps enough to support just one of the airports when the economy isn't in difficulty.

The Government White Paper for airports did suggest that a 300m runway extension was possible to the South East end of the main runway. The airport Masterplan highlights that although such an extension isn't planned at the moment, land has been safeguarded for a potential future runway extension at both the South East and North West end of the runway.

Bridgepoint will already be aware that even if they were to spend many million on extending the runway at both ends they would still not achieve the distance required to enable flights to operate direct to places like Hong Kong. So why would they consider spending such vast amounts of money on such a venture without the promise of a return in their investment. Increasing the runway length would only increase the range of aircraft that can already use the airport but this is unlikely to mean that a significant number of new destinations would become possible.

Try a screen capture or copy and paste the link onto the forum, but is it not like the one I posted a couple of pages back?

I found this relating to the tender and thought it may be of interest. It would appear that Pascall Watson may be overseeing things, although nothing as yet on their website/announced. Also read separately that Bradford Mace (Macegroup) are to be involved.

I would be interested to know your thoughts after reading my previous post in response to your comments about long haul flights and intercontinental air travel from LBA?

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Aviador-nothing really else to say on long haul flights/runway extension. I read your statement regarding no extension plans for the for seeable future. We will have to watch the space for the forth comming years as to whether or not we will have a regular service to New York/Dubai or where else is possible to reach via LBA?.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Guys, Birmingham airports 405M runway extension will cost £120 Million. I don’t think LBIA will have the necessary capital to do this what with the terminal upgrades.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I know someone who flies to Dubai regularly. They do not use flights from Manchester simply because they are signifcantly more expensive than those from Heathrow. I'm sure if flights from northern airport were cheaper, they would be better used.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Well, the SSP has now shut down upstairs. Burger Ming and Yates only now.

I also heard this weekend that a new shoe shop is setting up in a week or two selling sandals and flip-flop sort of things. Anyone know anythign about this?

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Winter 2009/10 sees more runway repairs plus I've heard that work on the airfield lighting is to be undertaken.

Do you happen to know if that is the same work that was originally planned for last winter but didn't materialize in the end?

any signs of movement on the terminal development? at this rate they'll be lucky to complete by summer 2011!

I heard something today that wasn't very pleasing to the ears. I don't know if it's true but I was told that the ground works aren't expected to start until March and major work until much later, possibly as late as next October. I just hope that this is completely wrong.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

If the terminal development is not supposed to be ready until Summer 2011 (which is what I heard) then the above programme isn't far out. It would be quite feasible to build the extended terminal between October and May/June, especially if work is ongoing around the clock which is often is on larger projects such as this. The ground works (foundations, drainage, etc) can take quite some time to plan and get approvals for, and winter is the wrong time of year to be doing it from a building perspective - although it is the OBVIOUS time to do it from an airport perspective.

As far as I am aware, at the stage where planning consent was given (subject to conditions which last time I heard were still under discussion and not yet finalised), the terminal plans were done, but in all probability all the M&E plans, Groundwork and Phasing plans were probably not done. It would be crazy to spend all that money planning those elements of the scheme if it hadn't been approved. It will take some time to come up with all that stuff to be worked in to the main plans and they will have to get building control approval, Fire Officer approval and all that stuff. It all takes time.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I have just been looking at the Leeds City Council website planning pages. The PDF listing the airports conditions of approval seems to have disappeared. Does anyone know if this has now been fully signed off by the council now?

Re: Infrastructure Developments

The airport have the planning certificate issued and so can proceed whenever they choose. They obviously need to decide when to start the work taking into account various considerations including minimising disruption over peak periods, growth in passenger numbers etc. I believe the next consultative committee is scheduled to meet this Thursday, so perhaps if we have our usual attendee(s) there, more news may be forthcoming

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I am hoping to be there LS16 (subject to getting the time off work) and will report anything relating to the terminal development.
