Ooooops! Knew that would set the cat of among the pigeons...
It was quoted by David Laws in interview I've just read in this months issue of "Airports of the World" magazine. It's quite an indeft and covers about 8 pages.

Would you care to expand on it? I'm intrigued!:)

Can't see it going to south side near to Multiflight.

It is extremely like the new fire station would go on the Southside of the airfield. It's the obvious place for it and I would think it would be extremely likely the airport has safeguarded land for it.

At the time of the last Consultative Committee meeting, in December, LBA management stated that they are looking for a suitable location for the new fire station, and the area currently occupied by the Fire Crew, will become part of the new baggage area - enabling all flights to check in at that end of the terminal building by around 2019-20, when the entire terminal will be re-modelled. As for the plans on the South Side, I have seen nothing, but when asking about the possibility of a viewing area on the South Side, I did say that we would need an earth embankment so we could see, and take photos, over the airport security fence - as they have over at MAN. I was told then by an airport employee that 'if the plans for the Southside come to fruition, there will be no shortage of spoil available to create such an embankment. So there are, it would seem, some plans in the pipeline.

I saw drawings ages ago for the South side that showed a new hangar to the East of the existing and about the same size together with an expanded apron in front of it. As for the fire station I understand the favourite is where the old fuel buildings/tanks are ie just to the West of stand 1. I've never seen anything which plans for a viewing area!

No you won't see any plans for a viewing area, as there are none. But it is something we keep on asking for at the airport Consultative Committee meetings.

Surely the fire station should be as far away from buildings as possible. When you see the evacuation zone round Nottingham station yesterday a fire in some areas I would have thought would put access to the fire station at LBA in doubt.

I was thinking somewhere along delta taxiway near to the radar. Plus is that the fire dump is just around corner.

I can't remember the exact figure but I think all areas of the airfield (now and into the future) need to be within 3 minutes of the new fire station. Plus on top of that all areas of the airfield have to be in view from the station. There's a reason Manchester runway 2 has its own fire station!

The only place on the airfield that is suitable for a new fire station is Southside.
All the indications I have seen or heard are that the area next to Stand 1, where the original fuel farm is, is the most likely spot for a new station. Why would this not be suitable?

There is no 'fire dump ground'. The area you refer to used to be a fire training ground but is no longer used as such. It's major use these days is to store the snow clearing equipment when it's not in use. At the moment it's been used as plant storage for the guys doing the airfield ground lighting works at night.

Every airport fire station has a watch room and the entire runway must be visible from this location. The whole of the ramp area must also be visible. The present location has a restricted view of the ramp but it is likely a new fire station would have to comply with CAA rules. As such the entire ramp and manoeuvring area will need to be viewable.

Can you tell me where I can read this 'rule', I've had a look on the CAA website but can't find anything. As far as I know, the only rule is about the time taken to get to an incident. From memory I think it says they should be able to get there within 80 secs, but I might be wrong. The current fire station certainly doesn't have a view of the whole airfield, but no one sits and watches anyway, they get alerted by the VCR.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
