Re: Infrastructure Developments

I flew LBA - AMS on Monday morning and its the first time for a couple of years that I have flown at a "busy period". There were a lot of people around but as far as I am aware everyone who wanted a seat had one and people seemed to be getting to the appropriate gate OK. I think that the problem of people complaining of the overcrowding, is because in the past the terminal was never busy so it was a more relaxed atmosphere. If you are going to fly at a popular time then you should expect it to be busy.
I've got a couple more flights booked this year so I shall compare.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Seasider, I agree. I flew to AMS last Wednesday. Was through security in 5 minutes and got a seat no problem.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

You are both right, there are many times when the departure lounge isn't at capacity. Mon - Tue & Wednesday are traditionally the quietest days so you are unlikely to encounter any 'significant' problems on those days. However, the same cannot be said for Thu, Fri, Sat or Sun when on many occasions during peak periods people can be seen sitting on the floor as 'Flyer' suggested in another thread. On some occasions you cannot see the carpet because of the number of people sitting on the floor in the lounge. This is a huge problem at busy times and I hope the airport can improve the situation quickly, even with some temporary measures if that is at all possible.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

My turn for AMS next weekend, so I will see for myself what Saturday morning is like.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Sat morning is busy but if anyone is flying on a Sunday afternoon they will see the airport throughput at it's peak.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

It looks like the new lighting scheme is being implemented in the landside arrivals concourse down towards check-in hall A. The new lighting seems to be much brighter than the old style lighting.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

if any can't find a seat go round to gate 8 theres plenty there coz no 1 seems to know about it

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Moving the discussion about infrastructure away from the Jet2 thread....

Ryanair's Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said that "it is very disappointing that the promised runway extension at Belfast City Airport has still not materialised more than three years after we opened the base at Belfast City".

Mr O'Leary added that "in these circumstances, sadly, we have better alternative airports elsewhere in the UK and Europe, all of whom are willing and able to provide us with the runway infrastructure and low-cost facilities we need".

I hope Leeds Bradford Airport isn't going to be faced with the same scenario as Belfast City Airport if the terminal work doesn't go ahead shortly.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

Remember this could be an excuse for routes which are not performing well, Ryanair would never admit they just weren't getting the business. Terminal infrastructure is not a concern I'd imagine, its the costs that they worry about!

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I would agree with that. I doubt Ryanair would mind if the passengers were kept in a shed as long as the airport has low landing fees, fast turn round and their aircraft are given the priority they demand.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

 they better pull their finger out of there arse and get working on the terminal FAST or they will lose loads of business!!!! The current terminal is pathetic.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I agree, we need a capable Terminal to handle the amount of passenger figures the Airport is hoping to attract in the future, this Terminal struggles with the passengers using it now let alone the 3.5 to 4 million they are trying to attract,

Re: Infrastructure Developments

It's not just the terminal though is it. I am reliably informed that ever stand is occupied at night. I know that there is great scope for W legs inbound at the quieter times, but we don't seem to have any space for additional based aircraft.

More apron space required me thinks!!

Re: Infrastructure Developments

There seems to be only limited space available for more apron areas. I can't help thinking that the terminal proposals do not go far enough an will still hamper the overall development of LBA in the future. Rather than extend the existing terminal and integrate old with new (which always costs a lot) they could, perhaps should, have built a new terminal over the existing short term car park, using the lower level for arrival drop off, and the upper level for departures (as happens at most decent size airports). Once the new terminal was open, the old one should have been bulldozed completely, and the apron area extended down to the new terminal. This would have made a huge difference to the space available on the airfield itself and overcome a number of current problems. Obviously the investment would have been greater, but being honest, I think it is what was needed. As long as the terminal is as close to the runway as it is, there will be problems at LBA, particularly relating to parking space.

I do wonder sometimes if Bridgepoint have realised that what they are proposing will only prove to be a short term improvement and will do nothing to solve the other problems airside.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

True, but none (especially the South Side) are ideal as they are getting further and further from the terminal building. Much further and they will be parking up in Horsforth. With a completely new terminal there would have been enough apron space to allow parking on both sides of the apron right in front of the terminal itself.

Re: Infrastructure Developments

The Masterplan shows a new location for the Fuel Farm, and even a degree of urgency about doing this, so if this is the case what will happen to the area presently used for the fuel farm? Would this provide extra apron space?
Also I wondered if they would build a new terminal from Stand 9 downwards. The lower ground would be ideal for public transport, car rental etc and make this terminal the International Terminal and keep the existing one for Domestic and Irish use, although both terminals linked for passenger use. Expensive, yes but maybe better for the future .

Re: Infrastructure Developments

I think any stands on the old fuel farm area would be too near to taxiway alpha and the runway due to the close proximity of the jet2 building.

I think the masterplan was put together before the Jet2 building was constructed. Surely it would be more beneficial for more apron space and to knock down the Jet2 building and have them relocated? The Jet2 building doesn't look more than a temporary structure to me just like departure hall B!

Re: Infrastructure Developments

It's about time they flattened everything east of Multiflight and just level the whole South side. You would get loads of stands then.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
