Everyone's just nitpicking now? I mean, really, LBA has virtually no military traffic apart from the occasional flypast. If you lot are going to complain about that then what about emergency service vehicle sirens, noisy buses and truck movements on the A65 and A658, the wind and rain, where do you stop. This discussion is getting silly now. No more in this thread about noise. We have a thread dedicated to anti airport discussions and those types of posts need to go there. I will be moving them.

This thread is for Infrastructure Development related topical discussions only. LBA has announced fantastic plans to build a new terminal.

@rmac No problem with your post, it's just not the right thread for this type of discussion. Please contact me through the PM system if you would like to discuss this further.

I was not complaining about the RAF activity but as the airport wants all the support it can get for the new terminal maybe some reading the Evening News will complain, and get it wrong, and then any negative comments only fall into the hands of the protesters. Therefore my question was -Does the airport have to have these approach flights at this time when the airports future is being discussed favourably or not.

Yes it's not easy getting the right balance as discussions naturally go off topic from time to time.

Shortly after the new terminal was announced I did say the thread must keep on topic. It was inevitable people were going to stray away onto discussions about rail links, noise and so on. It's not a problem talking about those thing but it would be better if it was posted in a more suitable thread.

What I did this time was I let the discussion run for a while in hope it would venture back on topic. I even contributed to it myself to respond to Tarn Spotter.

Unfortunately the thread was becoming polarised on noise related discussions.

That is why I've moved it. Nothing is deleted.

The airport have apparently formally submitted the planning application for the new terminal to Leeds city council. If it has made it onto the planning portal, then this is the place where expressions of support from the general public can make a difference. I’m aware that local opposition groups and extinction rebellion will be objecting strongly so getting as many supporting views will be important. Across this group, Facebook groups etc it should be possible to get a few hundred names added I think

Yes they have. There is a press release on the airport website. In the circumstances, this is great news. It would have been easy to use the current situation as an excuse to not bother. This is now an even bigger commitment to LBA than it was before.

I was worried that the airport owners might delay the application for the new terminal as the airline business is in for an uncertain few years.
However if they are keen to move things forward then I would imagine Leeds City Council will back the plans. The environmentalists do have more ammunition for their cause but aviation is not going away and a new way of doing things is needed. Still a new state of the art terminal is a step in the right direction.

you all beat me to it! plans submitted to LCC, great looking terminal with the updated designs, and the walk way is very long indeed right down to the existing terminal what I do like! You never know the plans might be approved without any of the nimbys even realising as everyone is so consumed with the covid-19 situation. All we need now is easyjet :)

I understand the planning application number is 20/02559/FU. Time to get yourselves, your other halves and any adult children busy. If ever LBA and it's employees needed a boost that approval would bring, it's now.

The opposition are already posting on FB.

On what pages etc? I love a good debate and argument.

LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT SUBMITS PROPOSAL FOR
MORE EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE REPLACEMENT
TERMINAL
Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has submitted its planning application to build a new, state-of-the-art replacement terminal to Leeds City Council. The proposal aims to dramatically improve passenger experience, deliver one of the UK’s most environmentally efficient airport buildings, and support the region’s economic prosperity

The plans, first announced in January this year, replace a previously consented scheme and LBA’s existing terminal building with a more efficient and sustainable development, enabling the airport to reach its target of becoming carbon net zero by 2023 for airport operations. The plans propose the construction of a three floor, 34,000 sq. mt. replacement terminal on an alternative site within the airport’s boundary.

Prior to the submission, LBA engaged in an extensive consultative process, with thousands of residents and organisations across Yorkshire providing feedback on the proposed plans. If approved, it is anticipated that work could begin before the end of 2020, with the terminal completed in 2023.

LBA estimates that as a result of the development, it will support 12,650 permanent jobs across the Leeds City
Region, as well as creating 850 construction related jobs over the period of the build*

Hywel Rees, Chief Executive of Leeds Bradford Airport, said:
“The new terminal design allows delivery of existing consented capacity in a more efficient way, with a smaller environmental footprint. The replacement building will have a modern, flexible design whilst achieving operational excellence to give passengers the best experience and address the challenges we know our passengers face far too frequently that cannot be overcome within our current building.

“We are committed to the future of LBA and bringing our plans to fruition if approved. This significant investment in the airport will protect and create new jobs, boost international connectivity, and comes at a time when the region and sector need to turbocharge the economic recovery.”

Sandy Needham, Chief Executive of the West and North Yorkshire Chamber, said:
“Connectivity to markets around the world will remain a major factor in the growth of our regional economy once we are through the current crisis, and so plans to redevelop Leeds Bradford Airport are welcomed by the Chamber. As the economy begins to recover, investment in new infrastructure will provide jobs not only during the construction phase but after works are complete also. As we transition out of the single European market, hopefully with a comprehensive free trade deal, at the end of 2020 it will be more important than ever that Yorkshire businesses can access global markets conveniently. Dealing with the short-term implications of COVID-19 will undoubtedly be at the forefront of the minds of businesses but longer term market entry strategies will benefit from more efficient international connectivity from our regional airport.”

In January former Minister for Aviation Paul Maynard gave his backing for the scheme.

LBA received consent to expand its existing terminal in January 2019 and the airport’s current roadmap signposts a target of seven million passengers by 2030. When complete, the new scheme would deliver significantly enhanced facilities, allowing LBA to meet this expected passenger demand with improved level of service and efficiency. Features to enhance the passenger experience include better surface access, with the site located nearer to the proposed rail link; modern and airy interiors; improved shopping, restaurants and bars; and excellent access and comfort through from arrival to boarding.

LBA’s existing terminal, built in 1965, is 15th busiest in the UK by passenger numbers. LBA contributed £475m to the local economy in 2018, employing around 2,500 people and supporting over 7,200 jobs.

Notes to editors:
*Figures provided by York Aviation 2020 comprising of the number of full time equivalent, permanent roles supported by the airport including staff, contractors and impact on the wider region. In addition, it is estimated that 850 full-time equivalent construction person years of employment (a person-year is defined as the amount of work done by an individual during a working year, on a specific job) will be created during build of the development, figures also York Aviation

My initial thoughts

1. Everyone needs to make a comment of support, this is going to get a lot of NIMBYETIBAHNA opposition letters (not in my back yard even though I bought a house near airport). You do this via the Leeds council public access site

2. Main terminal looks stunning but let down by pier building... Needs better cladding or living wall

3. Although a road is reserved for buses to access the proposed rail halt its not clear how buses would quickly access said road from terminal front

4. Another new Leeds development proposing shared cycleway with footway. Surely every new development should segregate (imagine trying to weave on bike around passengers with luggage)

5. Proposed meet and greet building could surely also offer covered indoor bus waiting room.

All in all looks brilliant.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
