What I also noticed watching the Leeds City Council councillor social club meet up was they also seemed to consider GALBA as an official body and it was referenced a couple of times. No reference to the Airport Support Group.

Which suggests that GALBA have friends in high places within the council.
The only hope is that the Planning Officer is able to make clear that there are no legitimate grounds to reject and in the case of an appeal the decision is very likely to be overturned. Whether that will persuade them to approve it under protest remains to be seen. Cllr Elizabeth Nash obviously understands the situation too. I guess the Tory Councillors on the panel are probably the most likely to support it. Presumably a majority decision is required but it's all rather depressing and quite frankly, it beggars belief. The anti airport Leeds City Council is back, alive and well.

In todays YP Coun Neil Walshaw who chairs the climate emerg committee ,said advice given to councilors to not consider emissions from air travel when making a decision on the airport was extremely concerning !!!

I think that advice is good news. In any case this planning application if granted will only result in a maximum of half a dozen extra flights so in my mind not really worth considering at all.

In the Position Statement released prior to the recent meeting GALBA was given nearly a full page detailing their standing, around the same as the Green Party. In stark contrast I read only a couple of sentences with views shared by the Airport Support Group members.

It was also noted that the council legal advisor mentioned Bristol and Stansted airport were appealing their decision and that their appeals would not be concluded before the LBA decision would be made. The legal team at Leeds City Council were unaware of the recent judgement in favour of Manston airport. The council legal advisor made it clear the Leeds councillors only need to take Leeds into account in their decision. The councillor who asked the question replied with "thank you, I find that information very useful for making my decision."

Little reference was made to the current unlimited night flying currently available by the airport from aircraft outside the night restrictions so councillors were left largely unaware of the extent the airport could effectively grow outside the traditional hours if the plans are rejected.

The Labour and Lib Dem councillors were very clear they would not be supporting the application which surely makes this a predetermined decision and a decision based on their own personal views not one based on facts.

Councillor Neil Walshaw - Labour (Chair of Climate Change Advisory Committee; Chair of Development Plans Panel ) https://democracy.leeds.gov.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=2631

A clear objector who wouldn't accept any additional supporting information in favour of the airport. Neil defaulted to climate change at every stage quoting literature more akin to GALBA.

Councillor Elizabeth Nash - Labour (Chair of the Standards and Conduct Committee & Support Executive Member)

Completely lacks knowledge and understanding of the airport but asked about Hackney Carriage access.

Councillor Graham Latty - Conservative

Primarily asking questions relating to noise.

Councillor Sharon Hamilton - Labour (Deputy Executive Member)

Nothing to say regarding the presentation.

Councillor Al Garthwaite - Labour

Very anti airport suggests the development will lead to more noise. She questioned why the removal of night flying limits was acceptable now but not 1994. She clearly doesn't understand the fact that aircraft are getting quieter and more fuel efficient.

Councillor Dan Cohen - Conservative

[01:25 aprox) Asked if colleagues had made previous announcements against the airport if they are at risk of being held to predetermine the expansion. He also asked what the economic impact on the city if the development was refused.

(The answer was members who had already made up their mind should exclude themselves from the panel.)

I cant stress how important this development is. It's not a nice to have, its critical that it happens. United and American have just cut 32,000 jobs including 2, 000 pilots. We must support the aviation sector in any way we can.
It's Leeds City Council's planning panel you have to convince. There are 1300 letters supporting this and they are taking no notice of them. They have zero interest in LBA or Aviation in general and seem to be well knobbled by Extinction Rebellion, GALBA and five disgraceful Labour MPs who don't give a toss about Leeds or this region.

Yep, when I noticed that plastic straws had been banned in the UK today due to environmental concerns it just seemed to symbolise the irrelevance of how these groups operate and what we are up against for the terminal development.

LCC are intent on destroying Leeds one way or the other. Seem to be currently digging up the centre for new cycle lanes and vehicle unfriendly schemes. Little wonder people who can prefer to work from home and do their shopping in out of town retail parks. The city and wider region is being totally let down by the prehistoric Council and Labour MP’s.

I know this is the airports construction and development thread, but in addition to the above comments, not only is the city centre being almost fully pedestrianised, it is being done prior to large scale public transport investment is in place. Consecutive national governments and city leaders have let Leeds down. Leeds is currently having its arteries closed off. Leeds is the city equivalent of being on a life support machine.

Here we go again. GALBA protesters at the airport getting a full page spread on the Wharfedale Observer website...all 6 of them!! Why do they get so much attention???

When GALBA win this as I think they will, are they then going to campaign for speed bumps and cycle lanes on the M62 for West Yorkshire air passengers to do the 140 mile round trip to Manchester airport to do the same air journey from there.

Am I being naive? I just cant believe a brand spanking new, environmentally friendly terminal will be refused. It's a darn 'green' terminal so I just dont understand why they are even objecting.
It's because they don't see the bigger picture. They are blinded by things on the surface and nothing more, seeing only what they want to see, hearing what they want to hear and saying what they want to say. They should be renamed the 3 unwise GALBA's!

No they won't as one of their leaders told me everyone should fly from Manchester, like he does, getting there in his clean electric car. Proof if ever you needed it that he, and this group are not environmentalists, but NiMBYs.
He had no response when I pointed out his clean electric car was powered by electricity, the production of which globally , is the greatest generator of CO2. Or that the batteries that power it are full of dangerous pollutants.
All he was bothered about was the run down and eventual closure of LBA, a prospect that had him smiling . Sickening.

What we have to understand is that the Wharfedale, along with all other news media are looking for is headline news articles. I spoke to one of their journalists a couple of weeks ago and complained about the apparent imbalance in their reporting and the impression I got was they would willingly publish articles for the 'pro' lobby but none are forthcoming. Really its up to the airport to respond to articles such as these but with hindsight maybe we should have formed our own group to lobby for airport development.

In any case, rather than complaining in the forum why don't more of you leave comments on there articles? That's what the comment facility is there for. Im constantly doing so but apart from one other forum member I seem to be fighting this particular battle with the Wharfedale on my own. on my own.

I have left my comment on this article already, but have left plenty unsaid to use when the usual objectors leave their comments.

These people who think they are little Mr & Mrs Self important local indignataries really do wind me up, anyone would think the airport was in a really environmentally sensitive area like a national park, they really do need a kick up the ar** and have a dose of reality. If this application had been about runway extension they might have had a point but its not, it's simply about giving the travelling passengers a better experience. I sincerely hope that application is approved but if it gets refused I really do hope the decision is appealed and if needs be goes to a public enquiry where an inspector would have to look at the overall picture, not just the attitude of local NIMBY MP's and councillors

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
