These new portacabins are going to be for Jet2. The temporary building known as Wensleydale House currently positioned on stand 1 is going and a the new replacement (second hand) buildings will be located else where so the apron near stand 1 can be extended.

I don't think this is quite right. The modular buildings from manston are going towards the end of the walkway. As far as I know, Jet2 will be moving into either the engineering block top floor or the LBIA vehicle workshop when they relocate.

Out of interest, there is a new job role advertised by LBA on their website (jobs), which, when you read the job description, suggests that there is going to be a lot of development activity coming up in the next few years - hence why they are taking someone on board.

I'm not so sure that is necessarily the case having read the job ad although I can see where you are coming from White Heather.

The ad sounds as though it really is only fit for a high flyer and that the successful applicant will play a pivotal role in the great things that will be happening at LBA in the near future. However I then looked at the salary on offer and decided that a high flyer playing a pivotal role would want a bit more cash at the end of the month than is on offer here.

It read more of someone in HR who has too much time on their hands being tasked to write an ad to bull up a junior role in the hope of attracting a bright spark who is influenced more by fine words than rewards in the hope that it will prove to be a stepping stone to a decent job at the end of the day.

Therefore I'm not convinced that it heralds a lot of development activity on the horizon although, having said that, I hope I am wrong and you are right.

So what are these buildings going to be used for if not a new jet2 crew room? There certainly doesn't seem the room in the building on stand 17...

Been some work today in front of stand 15 builders put loads of flag stones down, I guess this is the base for the second hand tin hut we are getting

So what's happening around the stand 25 area, I understand there's some ground clearance work taking place, is that correct?

I don't know if I mist one of the pdf documents you looked at but it looks like a few cosmetic improvements to the entrance part of the "tent" more than anything. It will look much better than what it looks currently.

Did you notice the supplementary letter where the airport says it is to invest in expanding the apron and taxiways?

haha sorry I was very blurry eyed this morning when I posed that, I should of been more specific. yes the new entrance and signage is looking very smart, and no I missed the part about the taxiways and apron.

Thanks Stevolba. I suspect that this application to retain and enhance Check in Hall B is a case of following procedure and the application will be approved. It is clear from the accompanying cover letter that discussions have already taken place with the council with regard to improving the entrance area. It is to be hoped it is approved as there appears to be no plan B and the airport could not function without it. I am unsure why the planning consent to build it in the first place was only temporary, but although not the prettiest (is anything at LBA?) it is a permanent construction so there seems to be no good reason for the Council to force LBA to pull it down - especially bearing in mind the cost to replace it and the very short timescale for doing so.

However, the covering letter does, as Aviador points out, give an early indication of what we might expect in terms of future development and therefore what is likely to feature in the Masterplan, which is due to be published for consultation very soon. It states that the priority going forward is for Airside development, and in particular states aircraft stands and taxiways. I have long said that if LBA wish to save on the cost of developing such things, they should do the additional stands and 32 taxiway at the same time. It makes no sense to bring back the contractors and start again, with all the start up costs. Anyway - it is clear from this that the long awaited stands are on the agenda, which should keep a good few folk happy.

Equally interesting is the confirmation that the Airport LInk Road is committed for construction, but not until 2021, so another 6 years to wait.

Finally it states that there is still the intention to commence the terminal extension before the end of 2015 - but interestingly it also states that progress will be determined by factors such as the economy and passenger numbers. That suggests that 'commence' might mean nothing much - and that completion might be some way off yet.

Overall though, some encouraging comments in that letter.

I fear however it is a case, again, of many words being spoken without any significant commitments being made. Just the usual I'm afraid so I wouldn't encourage anyone to hold their breath. A case of wait and see (and the wait might be a long one unfortunately).

This development of Australia's Canberra airport caught my eye with it's striking resemblance to Leeds Bradford Airport. The new airport terminal built in a similar way to what many have suggested should happen at LBA allowing the main apron to be developed.

What do you think of the Canberra Airport development?

That is exactly what should have been done at LBA. The topography of the land is tailor made for a terminal where the short term car parks are now, although in the case of LBA, the old terminal should be demolished then to enable the apron to be doubled in width. Then we would have an apron wide enough to cope with most aircraft right in front fo the terminal. It cost a fortune, but - endless add ons are just as expensive in the long run. Sadly, the passenger throughput at LBA is still insufficient to justify that sort of expenditure - and will remain so until access is sorted and the runway restrictions are resolved.

The two airports have a lot in common actually. Looking at the wikipedia page for the airport, the airport handles around the same number of passengers as LBA does at 3.2m. It is a high elevation airfield at 1,886 ft / 575 m which would be equivalent to having LBA sat on top of the Chevin! The one thing Canberra has that LBA doesn't though is a 3200m long runway (Manchester airport's runways are 3048m) What Canberra shows though is what is genuinely achievable with what is otherwise very similar infrastructure.

I had to take a double take on this image. I thought it was LBA for a moment with the similar cross runway, terminal and apron layout!

That is correct. No security will be required once the work has been completed. Thanks for the picture because I've not seen how it works before.

So reading from this that the new Masterplan will no longer include the Terminal expansion that was once shown in renders etc?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
