Jerry it was a good job you not on the last KLM flight of the day into CWL,the night stopping one Friday just gone. I noticed the flight was cancelled due to low pax loadings,that was the first flight to AMS was cancelled as well.

I doubt very much it was down to low passenger numbers. For a reason such as this, airlines have to give 14 days notice. If there’s one person on board they have to fly.

I've recieved a reply from the airport about filming airside and they say they do allow filming airside but there are restrictions within the CAA regualtions. They said that they are more than happy for people to film as long as they get in touch with marketing via email beforehand to discuss it the email is [email protected]

Fair enough if you like restrictions but there’s no consistency between that and other UK airports if it’s a CAA rule.

Yeah true, it does seem to be a case of up to the individual airport of how they police it. I do wonder if with Cardiff that because it's government owned they are erring on the side of caution.

This is aimed at professional/commercial film makers/broadcasters. Most, probably all, airports have similar protocols. There is usually a charge from the airport.

Ordinary passengers/visitors are unlikely to get a clear answer if they ask an airport if they can take pictures or videos etc for personal use. If asked the answer is likely to be 'no' in my experience although I haven't taken videos or pictures at airports for a number of years. When I did (I was always very careful in some countries and if in any doubt did not bother) I did so discreetly and was never surprised if someone said, "You can't do that here".

In the old terminal at Bristol I was videoing the apron from inside the departure lounge once. A security officer accompanied by someone in plain clothes who said he was from the local police (probably Special Branch) based at the airport approached me. I was told I was not allowed to video from inside the departure lounge. I never argue in such circumstances - you can never win - but I did point out politely that I could have obtained the same shots from the public road outside the airport, albeit from a different angle. They just shrugged. We parted on good terms.

This thing about airline cancelling flights at the last minute due to low passenger numbers needs to be forgotten about. I worked in Aviation for over 10 years and never heard of that being a genuine reason.
There is the usual 'operational' cancellation whereby an Airline may cancel a specific flight over others with the lowest passenger numbers on it to disrupt the least number of passengers. Klm have the evening bank where most flights depart the same time, so for example say the BHX flight was tech and was departing the same time as the CWL flight. As an operational decision if the BHX flight was full it would be less disruptive to cancel the CWL flight with less people on, transfer them to a BRS/LHR flight or overnight them, than cancel a full BHX flight and disrupt more people. Also the next flight that aircraft is operating needs to be taken into account. If there's no other reason for cancelling a flight it will never be cancelled just because it's not busy enough.

Nothing wrong with that. You are entitled to your views - and only airlines can ever know the real reason for cancellations, although Foxlimayankee's experience in the business is certainly worth noting as the testimony of someone who has been there.

It’s all gone quiet on the news and rumours front. Must be the heatwave.

Well most of the news so far has been from TUI and Thomas Cook. I'd have thought that the next bout of route news would come from the LCCs so that could come out August time. Unless it's really big news then they might release it around the time of the ACC meeting which is the 17th July I'm told. There is also Masterplan to be released as well.

Cardiff Airport expecting busiest summer holiday season in a decade
Wales’ national airport is gearing up for a busy six weeks ahead, as 296,000 customers prepare to jet off with little ones for a summer holiday or to visit family and friends while the kids are off school.



Over the six week summer holidays between July and September, Cardiff Airport is expecting an increase in passengers of 11% compared to last year, making 2018’s Summer holidays the busiest in ten years.



Customers can fly to long haul destinations including Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bali on Qatar Airways with just one easy connection via Doha. This 5* airline provides a world-class passenger experience between Wales and the Middle East daily on board a stunning Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which features 22 seats in Business Class and 232 seats in Economy class.



Dutch airline KLM also offers a wealth of connections to destinations including Dubai, New York and Orlando which are all accessible with up to three flights a day to Amsterdam Schiphol, a popular international hub.



Customers flying long haul this Summer are advised to plan ahead before they fly, by allowing four hours to check in before their departure time.

I don't know if that list is by the numbers or just PR from the airport but its interesting that Doha is in 3rd and above Alicante and Malaga. Last year Alicante and Malaga were just above 10,000 passengers for each route.

Netflights.com have ranked scored Cardiff 4.9/10 and ranked them 14th out of the top 20 airports in the UK for family friendliness. So is there anything Cardiff can do to make itself more family friendly? A play area in the departure lounge for instance? A family zone?
