Article on nice increase on the cargo side

http://www.handyshippingguide.com/s...stantial-increase-in-air-freight-handled_7570

"Between 1 April and 30 September 2016 Manchester handled 58,372 tonnes with the value of cargo passing through the airport topping £1.6bn, up by £56 million from the same period last year. The airport has seen a substantial growth to markets like China (+15%), UAE (+19%), Brazil (+76%) and Vietnam (+73%) when compared to 2015.

Growth to China can be attributed mainly to Hainan Airlines direct service to Beijing, which launched in June this year and flies four times a week to the Chinese capital. Brazil, although served indirectly, can be attributed to the number of athletes from the North that flew out to Rio for the Olympic and Paralympic games with their equipment."

Thanks Aceshigh. I wonder if Mr Kehoe will turn up??!

Mind you, the comment by a reader in response to the article is not very encouraging even if the situation regarding steps is not the norm.

On this point; if Hainan were to change from a 333 to a 788/789 as has been rumoured, would it be an increase or deacrease in cargo capacity?

That's a good question. I'd imagine there should be an increase in available capacity even if went to smaller aircraft due the increase in frequency.

I do think that Liverpool should have fully examined the facts and perhaps supported manchester as Manchester did with Liverpool2 (port) before throwing their hat in with Heathrow.

They now seem bemused that the promised support has seen a massive rebuttal. we're they unclear as most are as to who was actually promising what ?

Hardly suprising when those pontificating ie Davies and HAL were not the ones putting up the money . ...or indeed the flights !

The problem LHR and the Government has is that part of the case for choosing LHR was the promise of regional connectivity.

It is obvious that this was a promise that was in neither party's gift, as this is a commercial decision for the airlines.

It may be that Easyjet or FlyBe step up for this, but LHR are in a position where they might need to take on the additional financial burden of subsidy which will be difficult to credibly agree given the promise to keep landing fees "flat".

Totally agree Dobbo plus it's all very well HAL suggesting that "other" airlines may step in. Is it not a codeshare with British Airways that is the minimum requirement here ? an EZY flight to T4 with self connection to a BA flight undermines the whole premise of a seamless hub....

Off to bang my head on a wall !

Don't flybe and British Airways codeshare?

For instance just went to ba.com and searched for Kirkwall to Heathrow and got:

View attachment 4153

Obviously the Flybe flights are operated by Loganair which will be parting ways with Flybe next year but the code share is between British Airways and Flybe, not British Airways and Loganair.

Although British Airways have claimed (for now) that they aren't interested in operating anymore domestic flights, I don't think they'd have any objections to code shares with Flybe into Heathrow. Assuming Flybe does operate into an expanded Heathrow (no reason why not - they fly to both Amsterdam and Paris CDG), would BA want passengers flying Flybe then connecting onto a competitor's flights?

Something to watch.

On Sunday December 4th Italy holds a referendum on changes to its constitution. The outcome of this has major implications for the relative strength of the Euro currency versus our beleaguered British Pound.

In a nutshell, a 'NO' vote is really bad news for the Euro. A 'YES' vote maintains the status quo and leaves the Pound weak. 'NO' is currently in the lead (if we can believe pollsters these days!). There is alot of politics behind all this which you can read up on elsewhere if interested, but for the purposes of F4A it is the GBP/EUR exchange rate which matters.

If the Pound remains weak versus the Euro as we navigate the peak summer holidays booking period (January to March) we can expect a dampening effect on sales and consequent consolidations by the airlines. If the Pound recovers sharply against the Euro, UK holidaymakers' money will go much further in Euroland and this should encourage new bookings.

MAN has alot of capacity pencilled in to the traditional favourite EUMED hotspots for Summer 2017, at this point a big increase over already buoyant S2016 capacity. For this to succeed, the Pound must strengthen. If the Pound continues to struggle, consolidation of flight capacity becomes likely.

Note that referendum result early next week. It's a really important one for MAN's core short-haul operators.

I have 'liked' your post, EGCC_MAN. I don't mean I like the uncertainty but I like your explanation of the the ramifications of the various scenarios.

Whatever views people have on the matter, there's no questioning we are now entering a political shitstorm. Europe is entering an extremely volatile period right now and in my opinion whatever the outcome things are looking less favourable for European travel and the UK aviation industry in general.

As this is the General Thread I thought I would add a general comment.

Having been active on Pprune, airliners.net, Skyscraper city and NorthWest Spotters I would like to express my thanks to all the active members who provide such a wonderful variety of detailed information and discussion. It is a pleasure to read all if your posts which seem to never carry a word of anger.

Well done to you all.

I can completely agree - some of the comments on airliners.net are extremely rude and/or aggressive to other posters just because they don't agree. I understand that this forum occasionally has the odd 'heated' discussion so to speak but this is just constructive and helps us all to share our enthusiasm for whichever airport we are regulars to and for that, this forum deserves a lot of credit!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
