[textarea]Plans to increase the speed on one Leeds road

Plans have been unveiled to increase the speed limit of just ONE road in Leeds this year.

Leeds City Council bosses have made the unprecedented move to increase one speed limit in the city – through the Leeds Bradford Airport tunnel.

Currently drivers are restricted to 30mph along the stretch of road travelling into Yeadon but there are plans to up the speed limit to 40mph

People will complain about this but I think it's the right decision to increase the speed limit there. The A658 from Harrogate has a speed limit of 50 mph which used to be 60 mph. It's a non-built up area through countryside prior to reaching the airport. From the airport onwards through the tunnel the speed limit reduces from 50 mph to 30 mph despite the duel carriage way road. A gradual decrease from 50 mph to 30 mph as you pass the entrance of Multiflight where the road narrows and as you enter the built up area is the right move. At least this way drivers will pass three speed signs before reaching the built up area so there's no excuse for drivers who claim they didn't see the speed signs. Although they're one of my bugbears I would welcome a speed camera close to the crossing just after where you would enter the 30 mph zone.
 
Tell me about it. You get some right wazzocks (especially bikers) doing well over 60 on that stretch of road.
 
I posted on here a few weeks back that there were rumours that Centrebus might divert the Ring Road number 8 service into the airport. Well it looks like the rumour is not true as Harrogate Coach Travel have won the new Tender for the Ring Road no8 service and will only run it between Horsforth and Thorpe Park via Seacroft/Crossgates.

More interesting is the news that Centrebus have won the Southern Section Tender of the Ring Road service No9 off First Leeds. Now I wonder if its possible to extend that route from Horsforth onwards to the airport which would serve a whole load of areas that are not covered by the Northern section No8..
 
[textarea]Planning work to begin on new road for Leeds and Bradford airport

The first steps in a major scheme to improve transport links to Leeds-Bradford Airport have been announced as part of a £28bn road-building package unveiled by the Government.

Ministers will launch a “feasibility study” looking at “connectivity” to the airport, following years of lobbying from local MPs and business leaders.

A document published by the Treasury said the study will include “consideration of issues around the A657”. But any actual upgrade remains years away.

I see that things are starting to move as the NGT (trolleybuses) is concerned. Would be nice to see them eventually extend it to LBIA.
 
[textarea]Leeds-Harrogate-Yorks railway line campaign is given boost by new report

A campaign for the electrification of the Leeds-Harrogate-York rail line is being given a boost with an important report into the scheme.

Consultants looking at the case for overhead electrification have found that the move could double service frequency across the route and cut journey times by 15 minutes. It is also believed electrification will cut the cost of operating the line, which runs through Horsforth and Harrogate.

Well the following interesting news that Arriva PLc have bought Centrebus Holdings Ltd today will most likely have a direct effect on the the companies Yorkshire based operations which includes the “Airport Direct” bus services 737 & 747 to Bradford, 737 to Harrogate and service 757 to Leeds.

"Centrebus Holdings Ltd is a jointly owned company with shareholding split between Centrebus Ltd (60%) & Arriva plc (40%). Centrebus Holdings owns the operations in Yorkshire (Huddersfield, Halifax & Leeds) operating under the Huddersfield Bus Company, Teamdeck & White Rose Bus Company O-licenses.

Agreement has today been reached for Arriva plc to purchase the shareholding in Centrebus Holdings owned by Centrebus, thereby taking over 100% control of all 4 depots & the 3 companies and the O-licenses owned by Centrebus Holdings as going concerns.

Rumour has it that the companies Yorkshire operation is expected to remain as a separate stand-alone business, managed and operated separately from Arriva Yorkshire under a different name and probably under a different livery, But I actually think it would make more sense to bring it back all in-house and operate under Arriva's id
 
...so with a bit of luck we might get rid of those shitty old airport car park shuttle buses with the horrendously uncomfortable green seats.
 
In fact, an even better idea. Get Arriva to work as follows:

Hourly - Airport - Leeds - Garforth - Kippax - Castleford - LIMITED STOP
Hourly - Airport - Leeds - Wakefield - LIMITED STOP
Hourly - Airport - Leeds - Morley - Dewsbury - LIMITED STOP

That increases the Airport - Leeds frequency to every 20 minutes, decrease the journey times, creates more direct links...and better buses!!
 
alternatively run the Dewsbury ones through Bradford to fill the 737/747 gap
and run one of them through to Harrogate to fill the hourly service there
 
If they did, they should operate to and from the airport from Leeds via different routes to provide an airport link from areas such as Headingley. Now that would be new - Arriva buses in North Leeds!

Congestion to the A6038 Bradford Road junction and on A658 Pool Bank New Road to the Old Pool Bank junction. Please allow additional time or seak alternative route if travelling to the airport

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
