Surely there is potential to have another based airline, before monarch went under they were about to or had just based 2 brand newish a320s? I guess it's going to take someone taking a gamble in these times with airlines sinking left right and centre. With the correct equipment and timings I'm surely the custom is there, I thought easyjet might have kicked on and offered a few more routes when they started there Geneva service but i guess it wasnt to be.

Going back to the post abput easyJet wanting to be the number 1 or 2 main airline at a base, are they that at Stansted? Ryanair and Jet2 both seem to have bigger oparations at STN. I suppose easyJet was number 2 before Jet2 turned up.

Easyjet retrenched to Southend from Stansted, which opened the door somewhat to Jet2...Mind you that backfired a bit when Ryanair suddenly camped on their doorstep there as well..

Hendi, Monarch had 2 based A320s at LBA from day one of their base - initially two brand new ones equipped with winglets but these didn't last long. At the time they went under, they had just agreed to increase their base at LBA to 3 A320s - which would indicate that they were pretty happy with how they were doing here.

Certainly cant see Easyjet opening any routes to Germany from LBA in the near future.
The German marked is a huge loss maker for all European airlines, Ryanair announced in September their German losses running at £3m a week (£150M over the last year) and the financial market feel Easyjet is catching an even greater weekly loss on it German division.
Lufthansa with the purchase of Air Berlin is determined to rid the German market of one of their major competitors, Easyjet looks to be the one wobbling, opening up other u.k. routes to German not a wise decision.
Easyjets losses for the half year grew by £200m year on year, whilst the company blamed Brexit, the market feels Germany the problem. we should hear this month its full year results.
MOL feels Lufthansa is receiving state aid, when Eurowings announced its new routes during Ryanairs AGM, it was met with rolled eyes and disbelieve.

Cheers for clearing that up heather. I knew they had 2 new a320s at some point didnt know they had agreed to base a 3rd unit though. What were jet2's and Ryanair's bases like back then? If monarch were happy to have a 3 aircraft base surely that shows the potential is or was there for more airlines/based.

I recall that when Monarch agreed to a 3rd based aircraft at LBA back in 2017, (for summer 2018) Jet2 had around 14 based aircraft and Ryanair had 3 still, but with many more flights operating using non based aircraft.

Its a bit of a silly debate this as we all know that LBA could have jet2,ryanair and easyjet operating from it all with a large base of aircraft and very healthy loads per flight. Its just getting the airlines to do the above, but with improved infrastructure and dare I say it runway improvements it would happen, we are in west Yorkshire here!

Except if you read it again, it is not a debate. A question was asked and I answered it. Simples.

T.....my sister who lives 20 mins from Stansted is out in Spain at the moment and got her flight with Jet2 at £75 return and Ryanair virtually own that airport....so why did Jet2 go there I wonder if they have to slash prices so low to compete.....I really think they will leave there as that has to be a money loser.....

It may well be the price for that particular seat on that particular day was slashed but a very brave conclusion to say that means the whole Stansted operation is not working. They went there because there was no one was really offering the flexible package holiday product that Jet2 are having such success with. Stansted is also owned by Manchester Airport's Group so they have the opportunity to put together a group deal on landing fees (which can also include East Midlands). Finally, the management at Stansted have made no secret of the fact they want to reduce reliance on Ryanair so I'm sure they were keen to help Jet2 establish and grow an operation there.

Totally agree Finger66 . Jet 2 have employed a disruptive business model at Stansted ,a strategy for creating new business markets by improving upon or making a change to an existing business model which Ryanair have created at Stansted.,A very very well thought out business decision by Jet2 .

Fingers crossed - a 319 should prove more resilient to the LBA breeze / visibility than the Dash although Flybe often seemed to have more luck that Are Lingus with that!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
