The linked report below suggests that the chancellor will announce changes to the way air passenger duty (APD) rates are calculated in his forthcoming Autumn Budget.

It's speculated in the press that those travelling in business class or first class will pay more APD than the new rates from April 2022 previously published. Furthermore, the two current distance bands* - Band A 0-2000 miles and Band B over 2,000 miles - are likely to be revised into a greater number of bands so that the further the distance the greater the APD charge. If it happens it will be a return to a previous similar distance-based scheme.

A new lower rate of APD for domestic flights is expected to be introduced - APD has been capped at £13 in Band A for the lowest class of travel since (from memory) 2014.

* the distance is calculated from London to the destination country's capital city

Banding it on distance is probably a more fairer way of doing it. Though i do wonder if they could put in a clause if the aircraft is electric or operates on renewable fuels then APD can be waived?

Who remembers when lead free petrol was introduced? The new lead free petrol, super clean fuel will replace leaded four star. To encourage drivers to make the change to unleaded we will offer reduced tax. That was back in the late 80's.

The smoker was hit hard due to the health impacts. I've never smoked myself, but now there are less smokers the tax man has transferred his efforts onto other things. Drinking is now the big antisocial and is becoming more heavily taxed. Sugar has now joined as one of the big no-no's. Treating yourself with an occasional bar of chocolate is apparently now going to kill you. Last but not least the plant loving earth dependent gas that is co2 is now the big grizzly bear in the room.

So what will Rishi tax when we're all driving electric cars, eating lab meat and drinking chocroach milk? Is the day when we're literally taxed for the air we breath just around the corner?

He should take a lesson from Thenardier, the rascally inn keeper in the musical version of Les Miserables.

In the song from the musical, Master of the House, Thenardier tells how he goes about his devious ways of fleecing the guests at his inn. This is one verse from the song.

Charge 'em for the lice
Extra for the mice
Two per cent for looking in the mirror twice
Here a little slice
There a little cut
Three per cent for sleeping with the window shut
When it comes to fixing prices
There are lots of tricks he knows
How it all increases
All them bits and pieces
Jesus, it's amazing how it grows

Very good rebuttal from the CEO of Loganair to all those criticising the cut to domestic APD.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
