From Birmingham Airport 40th Anniversary brochure printed in 1979

It's been reported that part of roof of the old terminal has apparently 'collapsed' . If true it will be almost certainly mean the end for this historic building. Bhx management will be rubbing their hands :poop:

I seem to remember someone suggesting the potential of an open day for one last look around.

I'd be tempted to put the wheels in motion now and make some contact, before it's too late.

Would be great if it was possible but if the building is deemed unsafe it may not be . Personally I would be happy to take the risk as the chance of anything falling on you is about as likely as winning the Tour de France without taking drugs . Any idea on who to approach?

I guess it is still possible to arrange an open day at Elmdon however unlikely. But i don't believe it is possible to ride the Tour within the schedule without "help"never mind win it.

Am I imagining this but did Bryman Airways once fly Gatwick to Birmingham, possibly hoping over to EMA and back to Gatwick, a triangle route, maybe BMA did the same to and from LHR ?

Yes they did.My daughters' first flight at the age of 3 in 1983 was from BHX to LGW. The flights must have ceased within the following 12 months as they did not operate from the new terminal which opened in March 84.

As far as I remember the flights were EMA-LHR and BHX-LHR
LHR-BHX originally BEA with Viscounts and later Vanguards taken over by British Midland with F27s and Shorts 360's (5 a day rotations from memory ) what would those slots be worth today?
Gatwick started with Piper Navajos I think in a B.Cal. scheme then was Twin Otters.
Amazing what you can remember from way back.

Definitely Brymon from the old terminal BHX-LGW. I flew on it several times both on the Twin Otter and the Herald. One time on the Herald I was the only passenger! I flew LGW from the new terminal on a SH360. Seem to recall Air Europe Express? BHX-LHR I did a few times with BMA on Viscounts, Dash 7 (off the old runway 24) and DC-9 which was a really quick hop! Hope that helps.

Brymon used to Fly BHX-LGW on Twin Otters, then I think Air Europe Express took over with the Shorts 360, before they folded, then Community Express flew LGW-BHX-EMA with Shorts 360s and Jetstreams 31 until they went bust!

Forgot the Heralds.,didnt know about the Dash7.
LHR was once operated by a B.O.A.C 707 on a diversion day.

BEA also used the 'Super' 1-11's after the Vanguards. Used it for my first ever flight, a day trip to LHR. A student fare of £6 return

Ah yes the Super-One- Elevens a contender for the worst ever colour scheme in my opinion.
Pretty sure a Trident operated at least once prob did it in about 10 minutes
Lol

View attachment 8861 View attachment 8862 DIdnt know where to post these as there not bhx related but are connected with Birmingham. Came across these while sorting out things at my late mums. They are paperwork concerning a holiday my Dad took my sister on in 1964. My mum and myself (aged18 months)stayed at home. He either must have either felt guilty or got a lot of grief over it because we all went out there a couple of years later! Shame theres no paperwork because that time we did fly from elmdon.

Many thanks for posting that - most interesting.

The Italian Adriatic was very popular in those days with UK tourists, albeit the mass holiday market to the sun was very much in its infancy.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
