I remember the Aer Lingus 747s coming in for the Cheltenham Festival twice daily some years, nowadays its mostly just endless Ryanair 737s although even that's on hold these days.

As for the steps I think I spent most of my teen years on them waiting and waiting and waiting and then a BEA Viscount.

But do you remember ??
rushing into the terminal going up to the arrivals board ( a board behind the information desk with velcro letters with airline name & time) to see what was due in that day & hoping for something unusual.

Yep I remember that board well with the information on a sort of velcro type board with someone putting the letters and numbers on manually and the information desk next to it where you might get a booklet and the caffetteria and getting timetables from the airline desks.

Also the outside viewing area with another cafe by the "international apron" not to mention when slightly older the Aero Club down the lane at the end of runway 33.

There was also a good viewing lounge above the international terminal which was turned into a disco once a week to which I took my then girlfriend who has it happens is my wife of fourty odd years and counting but I digress.

I certainly remember those. Gives me a chance to post my photo (although I'm sure I've posted it before) -

Didn't Aer Lingus also use B707's on some of the Cheltenham flights?

I recall a Portakabin type building which would have been at first floor level. I also seem to remember a similar type of building which appeared to be made of orange or yellow fibreglass. One of them seemed to have a bar in it, but I never saw it staffed (maybe it was for the discos). The buildings seemed to just have chairs in them and maybe some tables and there was no entry fee. They were baking hot in the summer months.

Quite sad to think that BHX will probably never see a 747 again.
That's a very sad thought. I was always in awe of seeing Boeing 747's at BHX. When they were parked on the old stand 40, the top of the tail was level with the old viewing lounge, which must have been 4 or 5 stories high. I've been fortunate to fly on quite a few 747s. One series 100, three series 200s and 6 series 400s. On each flight, I got the feeling that I was onboard something special. She truly was The Queen of the Skies.

Yes it was definitely a good looker but maybe not so great if you had a window seat at the back with two Rolls Royce Conways blasting away in your ears, nevertheless probably my favourite aircraft.

My lockdown project to compile a collection of the works of Will Blunt taken at Elmdon in the 50s, 60s and 70s. is available to peruse on Flickr. I purposely went for the everyday and mundane pictures - those that were unlikely to see the light of day but with the passing of time have now become exotic and fascinating. They were obtained from various dealers on Ebay. However I am not totally convinced that they were all taken by Will or his father but I have added those to the collection as they fulfill the brief of the title of the album. I have also added a selection of my own efforts from the early seventies just because I could.

Will Blunt worked at Elmdon from the 60s through to the 80s and was a prolific photographer of the passing scene at the airport and had some of his work published in contemporary aviation magazines and airport publications. Anyone out there remember Will?

Compiling this album evoked many happy memories of my misspent youth and early working career.

I hope you enjoy.

Cheers DD

Superb collection. Many thanks for sharing on F4A.

I was in contact with Will Blunt (and his fellow Photographer Ken Perks) after I found a listing of his photos which were available for purchase. In fact I purchased a fair few of them a while ago. Both Will and Ken are no longer with us and I feel that their presence will live on through their photos. Neither of these Gents missed out on the opportunity to get their cameras out whilst working here at BHX and for that I feel anyone with an interest in this era of aviation should be very thankful.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
