Thanks Simon. I really love the memories these reports bring. Many of the registrations are etched in my mind forever!. It also highlights how many diversions there were back in those days. A spotter's delight and so many tuned in to our airband radios in those days waiting for a rare goodie to drop in.

Hi all

I am trying to find out the date of when these Concorde images were taken. I am thinking around 1992-4?
Does anyone know all the times it visited?

Hi guys, loved the older 'photo's of BHX. I worked on the apron there in early 60's and have a few nice pics to post. I'm not brill on computers (it's an age thing) but what's easiest way to load and where? I've only just joined this sight today as I saw a write up naming Will Blunt who was based in No.2 hangar as was I. I knew Will and his parents very well and was saddened to hear of him no longer with us. Any help to get started would be appreciated. Many thanks.........KD.

Hello Keith, and welcome to the forum.
It would be very interesting to see your 1960's photos, but in order to upload them directly, I believe you must be a subscriber to the forum (it used to be free, but diminishing advertising revenue required changes to the rules). If you do subscribe, it's very simple to upload by clicking on the 'Insert image' icon (looks like a photo showing a mountain on the header above your text - fifth icon from the right) and then clicking on the desired photo on your computer. Alternatively, you can link to a photo hosting site, such as Flickr, but it's not very intuitive and could be confusing if you're not very computer literate.
F4A is a wonderfully friendly 'aviation interest' site, with many knowledgable people who are willing to share their knowledge of not only aviation, but broader subjects too.
I hope you enjoy your time here and look forward to your future posts.

Regards

Kevin

As a local resident just over 2 miles from the runway 33 climb out, the Tridents were certainly noisy!. As we had our own couple of Tridents based at BHX, we were used to it. We had been brought up with the BEA Comet 4's ( and Channel Airways too!).
I do recall these fog events of the early 70's. Despite the Tridents being the pioneers of blind landings, they often fell victims to a pea souper at Heathrow!.
Happy days!.

Freight flights,

On New Year`s Day Falcon Cargo Electra SE-IVT arrived for a one month stay to operate for Channel Express on the UPS feeder service to STN and Southend whilst one of their Electra`s was on overhaul. It arrived as FCN6001 from Save in Sweden, and flew EXS4423/4 all month. Also new in January were regular visits by the BAE146QT`s of Malmo Aviation ,operating for TNT from Malmo through CGN to BHX and return.SE-DIM on 9/21/1,SE-DEI 7/23/1,SE-DIT on 14,16/1.Other unscheduled visits in January included TNT Air Foyle 146QT on 12/1 CGN/LTN.On 13/1 Fedex F27 OO-FEG visited f/t BRU,and on 21,22/1 Air Bridge used Heavylift Hercules PK-PLR on its BFS-BHX-BRU and return service. It departed back to STN.BAF Viscount Freightmaster G-BLOA arrived from MAN on 23/1.
Later in the month BHX received 1st visits from 3 `new` F27`s.On 28/1 Alpen Air F27 OE-IGN was used on the Fedex BFS-BHX-BRU service, and two days later another Alpen Air F27 OE-ILW was used on the same flight. Both are recent deliveries to Fedex Europe ex Air Wisconsin, operated in full Alpen Air colours.Another F27 visitor on 30/1 was WDL D-AELC which may have been a CWL diversion as it was a Ford charter. Finally Mistral Air 146QT I-TNTC visited on 30/1 f/t CGN.

THere was only one airliner charter which was Monarch 737-300 G-MON posn from LTN on 13/1 to operate a GLA charter, returning next day to n/s,then back to LTN.Two visits were made by Queens Flight BAE146-1000 ZE700 on 10/1 and 11/1.

Diversions,

A total of 144 during the month! On Sunday 12th fog struck the South East and all 4 London airports provided diversions, with first visits by Lauda Air 737-300 and Egyptair A300 early evening, with pax coached up from LHR.Close behind was a Turkish Airlines A310 from IST that was diverting in after a long stay in the hold, passengers for the return flight were already on a coach travelling North when LHR weather suddenly improved and the A310 landed there.Fortunately it was possible to contact the coach by radio and it turned back.On the same day we had 2 Balkan Tu154`s from STN and LGW.
It was nice to have a second visit by the corporate DC8-72 aswell, having only been in last month, operated by Jet Aviation Business Jets.48 hours later both EMA and LTN were fog bound from early evening. The best visitor was Aberden Airways HS748 which nightstopped.High pressure affected most of the UK for two weeks making fog a serious problem somewhere in the UK on most days from Lancashire southwards,so while BHX was open diversions came from North and South.
During the middle of the month MAN was badly affected and diversions went to LBA,LPL and BHX.BY mostly came here but other UK charter carriers generally went to LPL or LBA.
On 17/1 ,and frequently for the rest of the month both BRS and CWL suffered serious fog problems and we had all 3 BRS based Brymon Dash 8`s nightstop,as well as the 3 CWL based Manx Jetstream 31`s.Also on 17/1 we received a Meridiana MD83 from LPL on a one-off charter with a pop group from MAD after LPL weather deteriorated at the last minute. It nightstopped till the following afternoon. Also on 17/1 was a Convair 580 from MAN that has recently started a nightly feeder for DHL f/t BRU.It spent the weekend and Monday at BHX parked on the Elmdon apron.
There was a one week respite from the fog until 25/1 when it returned with a vengence, causing problems for the next eight days.On the evening of 25/1 MAN was badly affected, and a SR A310,and 7 other inbounds diverted to BHX.The A310 nightstopped and operated back to ZRH the next day.
On 27/1 BRS,CWL and MAN were all again badly affected by fog and BHX had 20 diversions including 7 early MAN inbounds. Both AF and LH always position back empty to their bases after having to divert. The best visitor on 27/1 was AF/Euralair 737-500.Fog problems continued on 28 and 29/1 as MAN and EMA were agai affected, ith more fog in the South East the following day.A BA DC10 diverted in for fuel due to long delays at LGW,and early morning fog at LHR gave us 4 flights including a BA 747 from EWR and a Kenyan A310 from NBO.The AF and SAS aircraft quickly unloaded and headed home empty, whilst the 747 and A310 also unloaded but stayed, the 747 nightstopped and the A310 departed empty to ORY.
During the evening we welcomed the Air Gambia 707 from Banjul which stayed on the 70`s stands till the following Wednesday, when it positioned to LGW for its weekly outbound service to BJL.Finally it was nice to see a BAF Viscount parked on the freight apron all day after diverting in from SEN overnight. This was to be trebled on the night of 1/2 February when 3 BAF Viscounts diverted in within a few minutes on Sunday newspaper flights f/t BFS.More info next month !
The penultimate day of the month brought a RAF diversion from BZZ in the shape of a VC10 from Washington on a medical flight. It parked on the end of runway 06 until it was collected on 2nd February. The last day of January brought further diversions from EMA,LTN,LPL and MAN.Best visitor was Air Liberte Tunisia MD83 whose pax were coached from MAN.

I noticed a mention to a BA DC-10 diverting in to BHX. I wonder if it had been repainted from BCal to BA Landor liveries, the Landor DC-10 was in my opinion the finest of aircraft operated by BA. When I saw one at Gatwick in a car park, I was frozen to the floor in admiration and have been hunting for a model in 1:500 to sit beside my BCAL version.

Thank you Elmdon 74 for the awakening of memories!

I think BHX had a couple come in as diversions after the merger/take over by BA in 1988.I saw G-NIUK on a very foggy day on 14/11/89 in BA colours.Regards,Simon.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
