I never use connecting flights for this reason. If a direct flight exists, I’m using it, even if it means travelling further afieldA pal of mine travelled to DUS (eventually) yesterday for an interview using the KL1020 out of LBA. The flight was just over 30 mins late and he didn't make his connection, yet the aircraft was still on stand in AMS when he got to the gare. Put on waitlist for the next AMS-DUS sector which in the end he fortunately got on.
One very dissatisfied customer who will probably not risk the route again despite having a successful interview. He was actually all for returning home from AMS because in his eyes KLM could have done more. I think the frustration here is that whilst flights cannot of course be held indefinitely KLM would know he was on his way from LBA and we were talking literally a few minutes. But probably a reflection on quite a slot constrained airport with a schedule to keep to
They hold long haul flights for late connections but I've never heard of holding them on short haul. So not just KLM policy. If you take a conbecting flight its just one of the risks you run.A pal of mine travelled to DUS (eventually) yesterday for an interview using the KL1020 out of LBA. If the flight was over 30 minutes late and he missed his connection then that surely means he risked a very tight connection? Yes KLM do sell them but with connections under an hour there's always the risk of missing them.A pal of mine travelled to DUS (eventually) yesterday for an interview using the KL1020 out of LBA. I have used Cathay connecting flights from HKG to CAN about 5 times with a 60-minute connection, they collect you in golf carts and take to to the gate if it's a bit late.I never use connecting flights for this reason. Its often to allow enough tine between coI never use connecting flights for this reason. If a direct flight exists, I’m using it, even if it means travelling further afield
Its a bit hard to justify extending it,It was his new employer that booked the flights. As mentioned I think the frustration was that the aircraft was still on stand when he reached the gate, just closed for boarding. And the fact KLM would have known the status of the LBA flight we weren't talking hours delay here.
Perhaps KLM needs to start thinking more about what their MCT needs to be in AMS
Same here, never had a problem.I have never had a problem with KLM when transferring at AMS. I have never missed a connection or had a flight cancelled.
Indeed. All 3 flights currently showing as cancelled according to FR24.A friend of ours travelling KLM has been stuck in Athens for four days. They have 'promised' her a connection toLeeds tomorrow. Lets hope the planned cancellations are lifted.

Im not sure what the airlines responsibilities are when disruption is caused by weather/circumstances outside their control. Having said that I'm sure my friend will explore all possibilities.no options on any other carriers either direct or via some other hub to the UK? i know AMS is screwed, but KLM is not the only airline that operates. they have a duty to get your friend home at the earliest opportunity - and that means not just looking at KLM. i very much doubt there will be a KLM option to LBA today btw.

Thanks for clarifying the situation. The issue that if she gets to AMS there are only limited flights available to anywhere else. Those flights that do operate must be massively in demand. Train to the UK may be the best option, unless KL book her on a flight direct to the UK or somewhere that isnt in the bad weather like CDG.their responsibility is to get them to their destination and look at other airlines - not just KLM or even just skyteam. there are no seats on KLM from ATH to LBA today so has your friend been confirmed?
the only thing that doesn't apply for weather (usually) is compensation. all other entitlements to rebooking and duty of care apply regardless of the reason for the delay/cancellation.
i hope your friend has promoted them to look at all UK airports and not just LBA. i don't believe for one second there have been no seats over the last 4 days to MAN/LBA/LHR/LGW/NCL etc. on BA/A3/LH/LX/EI/AF/SN/IB/U2 etc. at the end of the day i would have taken something to anywhere in England or GLA/EDI and got the train home - the train fare would be claimable from KLM. your friend should push them to look at these other options - and if they refuse it will feed in to the compensation issue i note below.
KLM are also responsible for expenses (hotel & meals) whilst your friend is stuck in ATH so they should claim that all back from KLM.
normally compensation would not apply for weather. but if the airline doesn't actually take opportunities to rebook them on other airlines to get them home days earlier, it does become payable. not something to worry about today, but it is something to look at when they are back.

I noticed this a while back, but didn’t pay too much attention as it was on a third party website. It would be a shame to lose the 4th daily flight, surely it must be utilised
