Christ. BHX gets more interesting visitors for a football tournament not even connected to the city compared to MAN earlier this week that actually had fans to transport! #bonkers

Just goes to show what a bit of extra tarmac and space can do.

Yes clearly BHX has the space to park these aircraft, MAN didn't even have enough stands for the football flights they had with aircraft being loaded on taxiways parallel to T2.

Think the key to this is that all the football traffic left MAN at what would have been a peak departure time anyway.
The extra flights arriving into BHX are inbound only and at a slightly easier time for the airport to deal with. The a/c will
then be parked up till the early hours of Sunday with plenty of space available. Under the same circumstances I'm sure
MAN would have coped easily enough too.

There are a fair few of those aircraft parking at BHX that are actually departing just after the morning peak, so, one would assume the full compliment of based aircraft will be present at the same time as the parked aircraft.

In terms of MAN, space is of a huge premium. There are already around 90 based or overnighting aircraft. That compounded with the fact we have lost the 5 stands for the redevelopment means stands are now a huge premium in the morning. Ergo, I doubt very much MAN could have handled many parking aircraft.

Out of curiosity, over the summer peak, how many aircraft does BHX have based/overnight?

Flybe - 14?
Monarch - 10
Thomson - 6?
Thomas Cook - 5?
Ryanair - 5
Jet2 - 4
BMIR - 1

Any overnighters???

Flybe have 14 based but I think one of those night stops in Dusseldorf. Thomson are 7 based but the 787 is only in for a couple of hours each morning so it's 6 for short haul. Thomas Cook have 4 based this year.

There are 4 night stoppers, Lufthansa x2, KLM and Brussels Airlines.

Flybe - 13 (+1 away overnight)
Monarch - 10
Thomson - 6 (+1 away overnight)
Thomas Cook - 4
Ryanair - 5
Jet2 - 4
Lufthansa - 2 overnighters
BMIR - 1
KLM - 1 overnighters
Brussels - 1 overnighters

Makes 49x aircraft parked at BHX overnight. However, given gate/stand constraints, it's a shock to realise its that high!!!

Iall have to see how many stands BHX has, as there are also a few nights topping freighters too.

To park an extra 8 aircraft overnight, 6 being widebodies, means that perhaps BHX has a bit more wiggle room than people think. After all, I do wonder where they stash the diverts whenever they are on offer, it seems to me that BHX is like a bloomin tardis!

I wonder if they might use taxiway T (formerly runway 24) as they used to many years ago when accepting diverts?
They did this relatively recently, when USAF C-5 Galaxy diverted in. I believe that it was parked remotely as it was carrying 'hazardous cargo', but it could indicate the taxiways use for parking widebodies. Whether it would be possible to get one aircraft passed another is a different question.

I'd say that there is a good possibility.

I'd have thought that the Elmdon Apron would have played a part but we're also seeing 32 biz jets. I guess there is the other end of the old runway in between the hangars which is currently used for parking?

Out of curiosity Kevin, does your girlfriend enjoy plane spotting too ?
She's not really into it, but is happy to go along to the airport especially if she gets a coffee and some cake.
She seems fascinated by the airband radio, although I'm not sure how much of the transmissions she understands.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
