Here is my take on the CAA data for April 2023. For some reason the CAA seem to have omitted Table 3 which contains Air Transport Movements and therefore I have had to leave that section blank. I have emailed the CAA for an explanation and, hopefully, I may receive a response at some time (my normal contact appears to have left).

Personally from me.I wouldn’t say we’re 100% back to 2019 standards. This is due to a number of factors.
  1. Emirates are not operating double daily A380 flights
  2. Turkmenistan Airlines are not operating from Asbaghat
  3. Pakistan international airlines are not operating From Islamabad
  4. No operation of Aer Lingus flights from Cork and Shannon
  5. No operation to more German city’s (Only operating 3 cities with two airlines)
  6. Air India are not operating to fully operational standards and needs to be increased capacity.
It’s getting better but just with a smart steady pace

April 2019 passenger levels to Dubai would be covered by a daily A380 and B777, which we get back from Saturday. I'd expect Dubai to be back to 2019 levels (or close enough) by the end of the year.

Turkmenistan had stopped flying to BHX by 2019 so won't affect the recovery back to 2019 levels.

Islamabad accounted for just 0.9% of passenger levels in April 2019, so whilst it would be good to get the route served again, the lack of the route isn't holding BHX back from recovery.

Cork was busier in 2023 than 2019, and Shannon was back to 95%.

Delhi and Amritsar carried 80% MORE passengers in 2023 than 2019, so I'm not sure how they can't be "operating to fully operational standards".

The one that you are spot on with is Germany, and by numbers it is the market that BHX is down on by most compared to 2019 - April 2023 was down by just over 40,000 passengers or almost 700 passengers in each direction per day (equivalent to almost 4 A320s a day).

The top 5 markets that BHX was down most on in April 2023 vs 2019 were:

Germany: -40,498
Spain: -26,274
Ireland: -18,537
France: -17,606
UAE: -13,547

The top 5 markets that BHX was up most on in April 2023 vs 2019 were:

Turkey: +18,823
Greece: +9,916
Italy: +8,683
Portugal: +8,657
Romania: +6,893

Markets BHX has lost altogether (Apr 23 vs Apr 19) were Qatar, Pakistan, Slovakia and Dominican Republic, which collectively accounted for ~30,000 passengers.

Markets new to BHX (Apr 23 vs Apr 19) were Sweden and Iceland, which collectively accounted for ~5,500 passengers.

The initially schedule of the New Easyjet Base from BHX in March has just added a new 30x weekly flights to BHX and another German City (Berlin) so that will also help...

Hopeful once the full Summer'24 Easyjet Schedule is released, 2024 could be a record year for pax?!

It’s a shame the airport doesn’t publish its monthly pax figures like some other airports do. Instead we have to wait months for the CAA.

If I may suggest a theory since I do not have the inside knowledge of BHX> It is likely, in my view, that the airport through it's technology, collects data such as load factors for each flight, revenues collected from each aircraft arriving and departing, immigration movements via passport data and biometrics, ticketing being recorded at checking in etc., all collected and sent on electronically to the CAA where it is collated, analysed and curated ready for publication.

I may of course be totally wrong!

Thanks! Do you by any chance know what the pax figure was for May?
1.005m in May

Correct

Bristol is doing well. I dont consider it on the same scale as Birmingham, but the numbers are very close (albeit Birmingham still down on where it was pre-covid). Presumably this is the easyJet base effect?

On that theme, i was playing golf the other day with an easyJet pilot based at Gatwick. He's very much looking forward to flying from Birmingham next year. Seems the base transfer requests for Birmingham are red hot. It'll be exciting to see the passenger numbers this time next year!

Do you have the data to overlay monthly passenger numbers with the same months in 2019?

If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
