Blue Air Starts New Route To Cluj-Napoca From Birmingham

Romania’s largest hybrid carrier, Blue Air, has launched three times weekly flights from Birmingham to Cluj-Napoca, the second largest city in Romania.

The route launch follows in quick succession from the airline’s announcement of its new route between Birmingham and Larnaca starting in March 2017 and its inaugural Bucharest launch which was celebrated in March this year.

blue_air_010.jpg

Served by a 189 seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the carrier will fly to the city of Cluj-Napoca on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday starting from last Friday (16 December 2016) as follows:

Depart Cluj-Napoca 10:00hrs / Arrive Birmingham 11:30hrs

Depart Birmingham 12:15hrs / Arrive Cluj-Napoca 17:15hrs

Cluj-Napoca is Romania’s second-largest city and is brimming with Bohemian cafes, music festivals and vigorous nightlife. The city is full of architectural masterpieces and is home to Romania’s second-largest Gothic church as well as many baroque buildings and medieval towers. Read more about the fascinating city in our destination guide here.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “Blue Air has had a very successful few months at Birmingham Airport flying thousands of passengers to and from the Romanian capital city of Bucharest.

“We are delighted that they are already introducing this second route to Cluj-Napoca. The Romanian city will be a popular city break destination for our passengers as it is a cultural and historic centre home to universities, great nightlife and landmarks dating to Saxon and Hungarian rule. We look forward to seeing the carrier continue to go from strength to strength here at Birmingham Airport.”

Tudor Constantinescu, Chief Commercial Officer at Blue Air, said:“It is indeed a proud moment for us at Blue Air to enhance our presence at Birmingham with the addition of thrice-weekly flights to and from the heart of Transylvania – Cluj-Napoca, adding to the existing Bucharest operation. We are also gearing up to introduce even more flights to Birmingham by adding another service from our Larnaca base starting in March 2017.

“The West Midlands is an important market for us, building our position at the airport demonstrates an ongoing commitment to Birmingham as a valuable part of the Blue Air family. One of the key opportunities at this airport is the mixture of leisure and business passengers allowing a strong volume of traffic all year round. Romania has excellent trade links with the UK and so we are confident the route will be a success.”

Seats can be purchased via www.blueairweb.com and prices start from only £24.99 one-way including taxes and charges.

Blue Air start Larnaca tomorrow and Bucharest rises to 4x weekly, adding a Sunday flight, meaning we'll see two arrivals in the morning.

08:15 0B151 Bucharest (OTP) Blue Air 734
09:30 0B5151 Larnaca (LCA) Blue Air 738

Winter flights now showing, Romania looks pretty similar to last winter at the moment.

Bucharest showing as 3x weekly on Tue, Thur and Sat. The Tuesday flight moves to the morning.

Cluj-Napoca showing as 3x weekly still Mon, Wed and Fri. The Wed flight moves to the evening.

Larnaca continues through the winter at 2x weekly on Tue and Sat.

I'd be really keen to know if Blue Air have considered a BHX base. Maybe I'm just being greedy!

They're one of the fastest growing airlines in Europe, and I've been reading many articles recently about how they are now 'truly a pan-European airline' - with bases in Italy, Cyprus and obviously the Liverpool base.

They've been expanding quickly - in 2015 they had just 15 aircraft by year end, and now - 5 months into 2017 - they already have 28 737s (the latest one arrived today!) They seem to have been improving a lot recently based on reviews (both online and word of mouth).

I'm flying with them to Larnaca in 3 weeks time, and I'm very excited. Lots of my family in Cyprus have flown with them from their LCA base and are very impressed with their low fares, high customer service, comfortable planes and the fact that they even offer free hot or cold drinks + a sandwich!

It's crazy to think that not so long ago we simply had full service carriers that offered all the frills with a hefty price tag, and low cost carriers that offered a basic fare price with frills available at a cost.

Fast forward to 2017... BA controversially removed free meals on short haul and have a basic fare without seats or baggage allowance, Ryanair offer better legroom than BA shorthaul and Blue Air offer free food even though they're a low cost airline!

And I paid just £110 return in June! First hand review to follow....

I'm happy that Larnaca is year round, especially with Cobalt looking as if they may be struggling a little.

A base would be great and I guess that I wouldn't rule it out, I wonder where they could fly to though? They have already dropped Hamburg from Liverpool and Rome and Alicante have a lot of competition. Bergamo could be a nice little route for them though, maybe a surprise or two?

I'd like to see Iasi or Bacau, that would see a good chunk of Romania covered.

TRIP REPORT

I just came back from an amazing holiday to Cyprus, flying with Blue Air from Birmingham (BHX) to Larnaca (LCA).

The morning flight out was at 11am and landed in Larnaca at 6pm - a perfect time to land, just in time to get to the house and take a stroll to the beach for sunset!

I wasn't sure what to expect with Blue Air, as I have read mixed reviews (though recent reviews seem far more positive). However, this was probably the best European flight I have ever taken. I honestly cannot commend Blue Air enough.

The flight out was almost full, and came with a delicious FREE meal. Beef ragu pasta, hot bread, crackers and cheese, salad and cheesecake. The air hostesses were very presentable and smiley, and were constantly going up and down the aisle giving out free hot and cold drinks, free alcohol (which seemed to be 'all you can eat', with passengers going to the back of the plane for more wine), free snacks such as a Cypriot nut bar and sweets during the descent. Just like the good old days! The food was delicious which took me by surprise, and they kept coming round with MORE food - I couldn't eat another thing I was so full. Both flights arrived early and the journeys in both directions seemed completely hassle-free.

What I really love about Blue Air is that despite being Romanian, they personalise each non-Romanian base to that country. I.e., they want to be seen by Cypriots as a Cypriot carrier, and the airline of choice for locals. Naturally, being that the aircraft I flew on was LCA-based (rather than BHX) it was Cypriot crew. However, in addition to this, Blue Air also publish a separate 'Greece and Cyprus' edition of their magazine (printed in Greek and English), and serve Cypriot snacks and drinks too. In fact, all over Larnaca there are adverts in Greek saying "we welcome you on board with authentic Cypriot hospitality".

This is particularly a nice touch being that most flights into/out of Cyprus are by foreign carriers. For example, there are plenty of flights to the UK but most are flown by Thomas Cook, Thomson, Monarch, easyJet, Jet2 etc., and on-board the crew don't speak Greek or have any knowledge of Cyprus - the aircraft spend a mere 1hr (max) on Cypriot land and return to their home base. It really does make a difference to have an airline that seems focussed on Cyprus/the Cypriot people, and the Cypriots seem happy with Blue Air's offering to Greece, UK and Israel. I also have to be honest, I enjoy flying a regular scheduled airline over charter/holiday companies as it's peaceful and quiet - no sitting next to the rowdy "Ayia Napa crew"!

I think Blue Air need to brush up on their geography a little. Is that Bristol or Birmingham?! And last time I checked, Dublin was in the ROI!

The flight back was extremely comfortable - we each had a row to ourselves which was perfect as we slept the whole way (after waking up at 4am for the 7.15am flight back from LCA!). However, from a business/aviation enthusiast point of view, I felt very sad for Blue Air and a little disappointed - there must have been a maximum of 50 people on board, for a flight with a capacity of 189. It isn't peak season, but June should still be a pretty solid month.

You can count the number of heads!
No IFE (who needs that now everyone has smartphones and tablets anyway?) but a nice drop down screen showing the location, a nice touch!

What irks me is how stuck in their ways people can be. After speaking to the numerous friends and family I have in Cyprus and Birmingham who travel regularly between the two places, many say "Blue Air? Who are they? I wouldn't fly with them, they're probably not safe. I'll stick with Monarch!". These are the same people who flew Cyprus Airways religiously, and only moved to Monarch when they had no other choice after CY pulled out of BHX (and eventually shut down). Now that they're used to Monarch, they won't switch. We need to support airlines like Blue Air or we'll lose the service.

The other problem, in my opinion, is that people tend to prefer to fly with airlines that are established in their city/country. For examples, British people would probably search/fly with Monarch over Blue Air, and Cypriots would prefer Blue Air or Cobalt, as they are bigger names and carriers that they used to, with crew from their own country. This is an issue because, as Anna Aero recently published, the split of tourists into and out of Cyprus is 65/35. For the UK, I imagine this is higher - 70/30 or even higher. Therefore, with more British travellers, British airlines such as Monarch are at an advantage. (Am I looking into this too deeply??? I'm waffling now!)

I paid £110 for my flights, + £50 for a bag (WITH 32KG ALLOWANCE!!) which we shared as a family. I spoke to people who paid £250+ with Monarch for similar dates. They had 20-23kg baggage, a night flight from Larnaca and had to pay for everything on board. I'm not trying to rubbish Monarch - they're a great airline and I've flown with them many times, but I wish people would be more open minded. I would be devastated if Blue Air shut down the route (though the fact that it's lasting through the Winter is positive) - I have flown with just about every airline to Cyprus: Cyprus Airways (RIP), Eurocypria (RIP), Helios (RIP), XL (RIP), Thomas Cook, Thomson, Monarch, easyJet, BA...and Blue Air are by far the best and also generally the cheapest.

I think my only criticisms are that the seat pitch was quite tight - this is because the seats were quite bulky (which also felt a little claustrophobic), they were not the new recaro thin seats that feel much more spacious. However, when reclining, it is far more comfortable, and the adjustable head rest feels luxurious. I noticed on a video review of Blue Air from LPL-FCO that their newer fitted seats are thinner and more spacious - so something for the future?

My other criticism is that their website is really dire, it looks so dated and isn't very useful. This doesn't give a good impression, particularly for people who are already doubtful and don't know whether to trust this airline that seems to have come out of nowhere. Also, if they continue to expand as they are currently, they'll need to develop an app with mobile boarding passes to compete with the other modern day carriers.

I'd really love to see Blue Air expand operations at BHX, they're an amazing carrier with lots of potential - but for now we need to support the existing three routes. PLEASE spread the word of how great they are to your friends and family. A personal recommendation is worth its weight in gold, and is arguably more valuable than any amount of TV ads and billboards. If you look at TripAdvisor reviews, you'll see how impressed people are lately with their new and improved service on board.

Side note for anyone interested: Blue Air are in talks to purchase 20-50 new 737 MAXs. This was a pleasant surprise when I saw the article as they tend to use older, used 737 classics, though NGs have been adopted in recent years.

They seem like a good airline! Interesting that they are full service considering most airline's are buy on board now. As an airline they do look like they want to become a Europe wide airline rather than just a Romanian one. Hopefully their base in LPL will do well and that will encourage them to expand their bases in the UK.

Fantastic report, I'm glad you had a great time (y)

It all sounds very positive for Blue Air, I suggested them to a couple of people when Larnaca was first announced but the reactions were not great. In the future I shall quote your report :)

Sounds like the load out was great but disappointing about the return. Larnaca has seen quite a bit of extra capacity this year with Blue Air and Cobalt being new along with increases elsewhere, next year of course we will also have Jet2 on the route. Hopefully those that have used Blue Air this year will be impressed enough to book again for next, if a decent percentage of those also tell their friends that could increase loads even further.

I also hope that once things have settled they will all be able to coexist :)

They sound good. Just hope some routes are not getting over provided with the additional airlines. Great to have choice and competition but we don't want the old faithfuls such as Monarch to go to the wall.

We prefer the Monarch flight times. Coming back later we get a full day in Cyprus. Not so good in an hotel but great if you have a property.

Perhaps the new services will make companies like Monarch sharpen their pencils but stay in business.

https://www.Social Media.com/BlueAi...27545187653/10154707477507654/?type=3&theater

Blue Air just confirmed via their Facebook page that they have a firm order for
  • 6 x 737 MAX 8s - owned (with a further 2 options)
  • 6 x 737 MAX 8s - leased from Air Lease Corporation
  • 6 x 737-800s (3 of which already arrived in the last few weeks), also from ALC.
So a total of 15 more aircraft are due!

Also, I messaged them via Facebook advising that they update their website and consider creating an app with mobile boarding passes and they responded:
"Yes, we do actually going to launch the new website version and the app. Keep an eye on us!"

Hello Bhx fifteen, great post it's really good when an airline delivers more than you expect I remember when we flew with Cal air in the 1980's on a DC10 and the service was superb, they grew out of British Caledonion following the demise of Laker.
I have just returned from a spell on the car park roof at bhx and a Blue Air 737 arrived about 0945. It's the first time I've seen them in the flesh so to speak and even the colour scheme pleases to me, wish them every success.

Might be an idea to start a thread about airlines /airports etc that exceeded or not people's expectations, I've no idea how to do it as i am still trying to master the abacus.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
