I read on another forum that Emirates are switching from the 3 class A380 to the 2 class one in October, that will provide another >100 daily seats (maybe a better mix too for yield - ie probably the premium ones were where they were empty).

On that subject it did occur to me that since Emirates added the A380 there has been less continuity in hard product at the front of the plane. The A380 3 class as far as I understand has lie flat seats in business and suites in 1st. The 777 only has angle flats in a 2/3/2, which isn't really that good a product by modern standards.

Very Misleading headline in the Brummy Post. To those who are not aware of what Emirates offer at BHX would think they no longer serve the airport.

As far as I was aware, Emirates has only ever flown the 2 class A380 to BHX...?

Fully agree with regards to hard product - not only does the A380 have lie flat seats in business, but also has direct aisle access (very important these days) from every business class seat unlike the 777.

Sorry, I read it on the dried fruit forum, I don't know if it's true, I've never been on the A380 from BHX.

As you say, the point is the same though. For a day flight the seats are OK but for the morning 777 the seats aren't as good for sleeping on inbound from DXB. Emirates are not actually that expensive in business class but long haul these days passengers tend to expect lie flats and direct aisle access - so maybe this has an effect on yields.

I posted a comment on the Post website criticizing the author for producing a misleading headline but stating that the first paragraph referring to a reduction in daily flights to Dubai was correct.

The headline is correct. One of the three services (I.e. a service) has been scrapped. Not all 3 or the whole route.

Not strictly true. Emirates describe the service as 'suspended'. I suspect that the flight numbers will be reserved and believe that Emirates know far more about their operational plans than the Coventry Evening Telegraph do.
My personal opinion, is that DXB is now extremely constrained. Any service, not reaching an Emirates target (yield being the most likely criteria) will be suspended to allow growth on other or new services that can provide the best yield for Emirates.

How about get FlyDubai into BHX on a daily 737-800 into the other Dubai airport, Maybe something to consider. I know it wont replace a 777 but if we go all A380, then it will be something.

The 737-800 doesn't quite have the range to fly non stop Dubai to Birmingham. FlyDubai do have some 737MAX's on order though which could make it.

With regards to any extra capacity being provided, which do people think would be better for BHX? Existing airlines (EK & QR) using larger aircraft (EK 2nd A380, QR A350/B777), or new airlines (Etihad, FlyDubai, etc) starting new routes?

The point about reduced cargo capacity from EK using 2 A380's has already been mentioned, so from a purely cargo perspective Qatar upgrading aircraft or new airlines flying to BHX would be better, but what about from a passenger perspective? More airlines - more choice - lower fares?

If you want to go to Dubai you can go a lot cheaper on QR. You can get a return in economy for not much over £300. It takes a bit longer but the change in DOH is easy.

I don't think it's about getting to Dubai though, or necessarily the Middle East, because it's easy and cheap from BHX. A big chunk of the traffic is just hub demand, connections to elsewhere, it doesn't matter where the extra capacity comes from eastbound as long as there is big hub on the end.

It just shows, you can build extra airports(DWC) but some airlines are reluctant to move.
