PHL ex MAN is mainly paid for by US/UK Pharmacy companies as is the cargo carried and that is probably even higher
at present with Government stockpiling medicine pre Brexit. The Alderley Edge facility which was Astra Zeneca R&D is now
bigger without them and linked with most of the South Manchester Reasearch and training hospitals which
all reley on that flight so very unlikely to go and will be B787 this winter as most of the A332s are heading down to Miami and A333

I think it is best to focus airlines & routes that BHX could get rather on this blaming on way so many airlines left around the same time Primera was launching. I would love to AA back using 737 MAX or United return although that is looking unlikely. I think we won't see anything new until some of this master plan is built & try to get airlines to come to BHX. The 1st part of the masterplan will finish in 2023 & will be fully done by 2033.

I don't we will ever see AA or UA back at BHX
The future is probably JetBlue
Not such what the masterplan has do don't with it, BHX has plenty of capacity when compared to the like of Luton

I dont agree with this prediction at all.

As soon as the "B" word is sorted and the country goes back to some sort of normality (That might be a long time ahead) and everything is booming again i really think airlines like UA and AA will com back to the regions. Lets not forget Birmingham might be booming construction wise but the country as a whole is just bobbing above the waterline. An economy that has 0.50 % growth nearly every quarter isnt going to be good for BHX when it is just an marginal airport. We will always suffer first when the economy isnt strong.

Everything went t-ts up remember when the vote was announced in 2016 and it hasnt been the same since.

I'm honestly not so sure. Brexit or no Brexit i think they would've pulled out and i'd be shocked if they return unless there is a big incentive invloved. I think from the US 3 carriers point of view the UK is a small place and they can concentrate on 3 points London, Manchester and Edinburgh with the rest of the country either using these 3 points or using them via hubs like AMS and CDG and FRA and DUB.
Probably the best bet would be JetBlue and Westjet but the former does like to upset the big boys at the bigger aiports and the latter is transitioning from a LCC to full service legacy type carrier so may want to focus on the main airports too.
I do think if BHX wants a trans atlantic service then it may have to pay for it and attract the carrier with a subsidy.

How I wish you hadn't posted those Orlando figures Ian.

MAN 2018. 28,707 thats for December alone.

I can see both sides of the argument whether Primera 'chased off' United, American & Air Transat, or Primera came in to 'rescue' BHX after those airlines pulled out. Both have elements that make sense, and both have either gaping holes or things that are hard to believe.

For me what is really hard to believe is that we went from having TWO! airlines serving BHX - NYC and the best passengers figures in a decade, to having no flights whatsoever.

Not long before they pulled out, United were celebrating 20 years at BHX having carried almost 2 million passengers. Any other airline or airport after an 'event' like that you'd be expecting either an increase in frequency or an up-gauge of aircraft.

Losing 3 big TATL carriers within the space of 12-18 months, its hard to accept that there wasn't some wider reason for them pulling out. I find it difficult to believe that United would struggle with yields after American pulled out. The 2 airlines clearly demonstrated how many passengers want to fly that route, how could United fail to attract those passengers after American pulled out to the extent they weren't able to sure up their yields?

New York aside, the three setsbof figures that Ian has so helpfully posted, and the trends do clearly show how we have suffered because of the offer at MAN. I can't imagine that LHR has had a greenhouse of Midlanders. A great shame but I still maintain that there are more important markets. Rather see Mumbai, Chennai and Shanghai....and any other city ending in ai

I dont expect US airlines at BHX any time soon either Ian, but surely that is in the context of now and in the short term, nobody knows what will happen long term. As i said in my previous post until this country gets back to some sort of normality which could be long in the future, i dont expect anything either. Which is why i have said 2019 will be pretty "boring" if people are expecting new routes at BHX and thats any new routes.

So i might as well post this, every little helps.

Are we expecting any new Long haul route announcement anytime soon? Seems very quite at moment

There were suggestions from some involved with the master plan that two long haul routes may be on the horizon.

Wouldn't you love too know the views of Mr Kehoe regarding the above? Or even more interesting might be the shareholders opinion
of Mr Kehoe.

Looking at his Twitter he seems to spend quite a bit of time in Bahrain these days. Hopefully he's put in a good word with Gulf Air :)

Not BHX I know, but thought it might still be relevant to prompt discussion given what has been discussed on here recently.

With Emirates flying non-stop from Dubai to New York they clearly aren't targeting Dubai - NYC passengers with their stopping services via Milan & Hamburg.

What caught my eye was this:

"Traffic rights, if granted, would be on a fifth-freedom basis and these are usually difficult to obtain, because the airlines of each [end-to-end] country will naturally object.

Hamburg, like Germany’s capital of Berlin, is neglected by national airline Lufthansa.

From Hamburg Lufthansa does not operate a single long-haul route (not even operated by its budget subsidiary Eurowings) so travellers to or from this Hanseatic city are compelled to fly via Frankfurt or Munich [when taking Lufthansa]."

I could see Lufthansa objecting to Emirates launching Hamburg to NYC as it could affect passengers routing Hamburg - Frankfurt/Munich - NYC.

Can't see BA, Virgin, Thomas Cook, American, United or Delta objecting as non of them serve BHX directly or for the UK based airlines even via one of their hubs.

The only airline likely to lose out if Emirates launched BHX - NYC would be Aer Lingus, and as they aren't an airline from the UK or the USA, I doubt they'd have any grounds to object.

Would be a good way to reinstate the morning Dubai service with a 777 that then carries on to New York? Or even a B787-10 when they arrive in a few years time. I think an A380 would almost certainly be too much capacity, but with Emirates already being an established brand at BHX, a 777 could really work.

Would Emirates want to start another New York routing when it has just started direct flights?

Would be good for BHX if it happened.

Emirates have had direct services to New York for years now. I think the services that route Milan/Hamburg to NYC serve the markets between those European cities and NYC more than between Dubai and NYC i.e. the vast majority if not all the passengers flying Dubai to Milan have Milan as a destination not NYC, and the majority if not all the passengers flying on the Milan to New York leg originate in Milan not Dubai (or a flight into Dubai).

I remember an interview with Tim Clark where he said that he regularly receives requests from various European airports about routing services to the USA through them.

It would be great to see and sure would claw back a chunk of the leakage but even if one was up for grabs, I think there would be some very stiff competition.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
