can't really see Gibraltar being a base for them, especially as Gibraltar is not your average airport, only captains can land there. It is a category C airport, meaning it’s a little more challenging than most approaches in Europe. Pilots must also have undergone special simulator training, sat in the jump seat for takeoff and landing and have flown there under the supervision of a training captain, all before being qualified to fly there.

but then, who knows what barmy ideas these airlines have in mind , maybe some sort of incentive from the Gibraltar government?

Just checked their website, and no sign of Birmingham on it!!

Yeah, of all the potential new routes that could come from Eastern I think Gibraltar would have been way down the list. Without meaning to sound negative it feels like one of those routes that will likely be gone in 18 months or so, I wish them well though. I really hope that NQY is being looked at either by Eastern or Loganair.

I guess we'll find out this week.

Might be thinking of the E135 or E145. The E170 operates into and out of LCY ok.

Gibraltar is the one where one has to avoid Spanish airspace during approach and departures, or so I am led to believe! The smaller jets with range would be okay for a UK domestic service as Gibraltar would be.

Not so - it'd be impossible as Gibraltar is surrounded by Spanish airspace.

For some, not entirely surprising reason, the Spanish don't acknowledge British airspace around Gibraltar:

The only extra training is an in depth briefing document, due to the non-standard approaches - no ILS or conventional navigation aid (VOR, NBE, etc).

Airports such as Innsbruck and Salzburg require simulator training, but Gibraltar doesn't at least from a regulatory point of view. Some airlines may choose to do extra training as they see fit however.

But I remember we used to have issues with the Flybe E175's departing from somewhere, can't remember now which airport it was ??? Think it was an airport in Italy with a short runway.

Speaking to someone who was on a full Flybe flight back to BHX from Florence it ended up leaving a load of bags behind, it was either that or some pax.

Flybe operated the E175 whereas Eastern have the E170 which has 12 less seats and, I am told, a better performance.

Yep the E170 might be the better performer on short runway.
