Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

I think this led to a very odd approach this evening by the Flybe E195 from Southampton. It was completely on the wrong side of the valley on final approach, and flying in over Horsforth rather than the usual approach which more or less follows the railway line until Horsforth Station. It must have had to do quite a sharp bank to the left over the Scotland Lane area to line up with the runway. No doubt it was a visual approach and aimed at shortening the approach. No doubt too that someone will log a complaint and it will appear in the stats at the next consultative committee meeting at the end of the month!

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

There were a few opting for visuals this evening 3VX being one, but that was 5 miles away on left base, great to see, i remember in the 80's the Air UK F27's used to do visuals weather permitting at about 8pm following about a mile south of 32, then tight left turn onto short finals. Once saw a 737 do the same, you dont tend to get much of it nowadays, all the H&S legislation no doubt!
PS like the aviatar looks like the BT tower! No chance of Pole VOR????

I looked at Pole Hill VOR but it doesn't have the same effect.

It looks more like a flying saucer!

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Was the ILS out again tonight? The PIA came in this evening and was well below the normal glide slope. Behind my house are trees and the normal flight glide slope brings aircraft in level with the tree tops when viewed from my house. The PIA was half way down the trees tonight and it is a long time since I have seen anything as big, flying as low, over the Cookridge area!

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

RWY 32 ILS DOWNGRADED TO CAT 1. 14 OCT 18:29 2009 UNTIL 03 NOV 09:00 2009

It would appear that the new glideslope is having teething problems, hence the temporary downgrade to CATI.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Not quite...

The new installation has to now operate successfully at Cat 1 for a given period of time before it can be used for CatII/III ops. Standard procedure for new precision approach aids.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Thanks johngowan. I had since found that out and I was going to correct myself. It's probably going to take about two weeks or so before it's fully operational again apparently. Does that go along with your school of thought?

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

I have noticed some pilots over the radio of recent talking to the tower about difficulties of keeping on the glideslope and other technicalities with the ILS. This would explain these problems,,,

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Well from where I was watching, if the PIA last night had gone much lower, it would have had to CLIMB up on to the threshold of 32 to land. It was really low and flying level, not descending. It was certainly way below the normal glide slope.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

So that's PIA in the provebial brown stuff if they are late between 3/11-17/12 and 5/1-25/3. They would do well to retime all flights to the current Monday times.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

PIA flights have already been retimed 18.20 arr 20.00 dep on all 3 flights for the winter season.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Is the runway closed during the winter due to a lack of flights and it not being worthwhile staying open, or is this due to work on the runway, or a combination of both. Anyone know?

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Just the usual contract with Jointline as far as I am aware so some possible complete slab replacement possible or in otherwords the same as last year.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

If they keep doing this the entire runway will have been re-surfaced in a couple of years time!

However, last year they did extend the operational hours by arrangement to accommodate the occasional late flight, including Jet2 and PIA. I would be surprised if they didn't do the same this winter.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

That is definitely not going to be the case this year. All departments have been informed that the airport will be closed during the night. The notam would read PPR prior permission required otherwise. Airlines might be able to gain a special extension but they would need to gain permission from Air Traffic, Fire & Rescue and the border agencies, Customs, Immigration etc.

I just hope we don't have much snow this winter because I can envisage major problems if we do.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Yes CAT II/ III should be back up and running around that time give or take a couple of days. It depends how many hours the 32 glideslope has been in use under CAT I conditions. A total of 300 hours of service is required first before CAT II/III can be restored.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Another NOTAM regarding stands 1, 2 and 3

STANDS 1, 2 AND 3 CLSD. 02 NOV 00:01 2009 UNTIL 24 MAR 06:00 2010.

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Anyone know whats happeneing with those stands?

I wish they would get rid of them so we can get a 757 on taxiway Alpha via Alpha 2!

Re: Leeds Bradford - Notams

Hmm taxiway Alpha is 1 metre too narrow. I amazes me that the council spent more than £2m on the new parking apron and then effectively got rid of three stands on the west end of the apron.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
