Bit late but still...

Lufthansa is today celebrating 40 years of operations from Birmingham Airport (BHX), having commenced services from the Midlands on 1 April 1986.

The airline’s first flight from BHX connected passengers to Frankfurt, operated by a Boeing 737 with 13 weekly services.
Since starting operations over 40 years ago the airline has offered services direct to Frankfurt, Munich and Dusseldorf and currently operates daily services to Frankfurt and Munich. During this period 11,820,750 passengers have travelled on the airline

Nick Barton, CEO, of Birmingham Airport commenting on the anniversary said:

“It was great to celebrate 40 years of operation of Lufthansa from BHX today. The airline has carried nearly 12m passengers from Birmingham to its hubs in Germany over the years ensuring a consistent connection for point-to-point travel but also onward to the airline’s long-haul destinations. This anniversary marks four decades of successful partnership and connectivity between Lufthansa and Birmingham Airport.”

Kate Tranter, Lufthansa Group Station Manager said:

‘I am so proud to have been part of Lufthansa`s incredible journey in Birmingham. Four decades we have connected people from the Midlands to the rest of the world, with reliability and excellence and today we celebrate this journey. This was only possible with the excellent service and good collaboration with Birmingham Airport over so many years.’

BHX’s 40-year anniversary falls within the airline’s 100th year of operation this week and to celebrate this milestone the aircraft used on the LH955 service today was the newly liveried anniversary 100-year Airbus A320 neo aircraft.

I'm sure they had a short lived Cologne/ Bonn service in addition to the above.

So am I although it may have been Eurowings also Flybe operated the route but as Dusseldorf is only 26 miles away it was never likely to succeed.

Dusseldorf is one of the longest served routes from BHX I remember the BEA Viscounts flying the route in the 1960's with Viscounts followed by the a BAC 1-11 which I flew on once for business.

Cologne has been tried by a lot of airlines from BHX and even Hapag Lloyd from CVT
It never seems to last more than a season or so

They did Berlin too. I remember the press release saying it was doing so well they were upgrading the A319 to the A320, then I think it moved to Germanwings not long after?

Routes to Germany are a shadow of the past apart from the ones already mentioned we had regular services to Hamburg, Stuggart and Hanover by BA and later Flybe plus I recall s one season wonder by Augsburg Airways surprisingly to Ausgsburg and of course we still have Munich by Lufty along with Frankfurt.

I agree HAM, HAJ & STR worked really well on the FlyBe Dash, realistically only Eurowings could opertate all three but aircraft a bit t0o big.

Unless you lower the frequency for the routes get more capacity.Works well at 1-2 weekly A319

Assuming that these routes are more focused on the business market rather than leisure then cutting frequency is not very attractive to the traveller. Poor times and low frequencies often becomes the driver to use other airports such as Manchester or London. Its not always about price
