If things get delayed a bit more, is there the possibility to open arrivals (for the peak May season) and then departures later if it works out that way assuming arrivals was finished and they were waiting for the departures fit out?

That all depends on whether it's possible for Farrers to hand over the parts by sections. I would imagine it should be possible.

It depends on the phasing of the different elements of phase2 . There will be some demolition and / or construction work to be done in what is currently the baggage reclaim area and definitely toilet refurbishment, decorations, flooring and a new escalator installing before they move the baggage scanners in there.

Very excited to see the new extension operating, I am sure it will look nice when the landscaping is done. People don’t go to the airport for the aesthetics but the convenience of flying.

Does anyone have any recent exterior photos of the airport extension?

Was going to ask the same, any recent exterior pics as I've not travelled past LBA recently? Last time i past the extension was all grey but the artist impressions show 3/4th up what i believe is tinted glass/dark bit and the same at the bottom of the build, curious?

The extension doesn't look any different to what was featured in the last set of images uploaded. You'll have to go back through the thread.

I assume the dark section at the top is windows and the lower is probably air vents into the lower ground floor.

If the side section 3/4th up is finished in dark tint glass or just black and the area at the btm is also finish in a dark colour then it should look decent, but if it remains how it is and this what we see is the finished build then its just one big grey box eye-sore! Its all about attention to detail, little touches can make such a difference.
Regarding the exterior appearances of new builds i feel its important that they should look decent, who on earth wants to live in a place where every new build looks unattractive, this will make the whole area a not nice place to live of which i can think of a fair few places like that. Sadly here in the uk we are going down that track im afraid. Im always one for admiring the style and look of both new and old buildings, it really makes a difference to a place.

Airside views look OK with the windows but all the landside views look horrible. It looks more like an Amazon/Next warehouse than an airport terminal. Prince (then) Charles once described some modern buildings as carbuncles. This is definitely in carbuncle territory! It's alright saying it's what it does that's important or that most users won't notice the outside. Doesn't matter, you can't miss that eyesore whether using it or just passing by. Could have done so much better LBA.

They did, it was called a new terminal but sadly it didn't happen and we are where we are. I don't know why so many people are dwelling on it. Had the airport not revisited the old plans we would still be waiting for something to happen.

hi aviador
i totally agree with you ref the new terminal also 2 new stands to build, plus refurb of the old terminal lba do not have a bottomless money pit (unlike dsa) for myself i do not a s***t what the outside looks like its the inside and how it works to ease all the problems we have had for years sorted.

We finally get what's needed to take LBA forward, and before it's even finished, folk are moaning about it not looking pretty. No apparent regard for available budget or the scale of the project. Yes, we could have had a pretty extension had that been designed and approved in 2017-19, but it wasn't, and clearly Leeds City Plans Panel thought it was acceptable.

I've already explained why redesigning the extension externally and reapplying for planning approval wasn't going to happen. It wasn't affordable and even if it were, any submission for planning approval would almost certainly have met with opposition , delay, and potentially, it would never have happened. Even if it did, the added costs would have meant no budget available to reconfigure and refurbish the existing terminal or build additional stands. When this was commissioned, LBA was just recovering from huge losses thanks to the pandemic, but they took a gamble and personally, I think they should be applauded for doing so not criticised for a building designed 8 years ago under different management.

Let's at least wait and see how it all looks when it's finished before criticising and labelling it as a carbuncle, whilst some appreciation of the costs and situation wouldn't go amiss.

I personally think airside it looks great, landside looks fine. As HX3 stated, once signage/lights/planting in it will transform it. And on the original pictures there does seem to be a yellow/grey pattern on the right hand side which breaks it up further.

Here is a pic from the original plans (passed in 2019) showing how the extension might look.
How come this isn't the one that is being built, to my eyes it looks far better than the carbuncle. I seem to remember that colour versions of this showed the external cladding in shades of yellow and grey.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
