Please, for goodness sake, let's not start criticising LBA already (again) because it doesn't get the airport open as quickly as LPL or MAN!. They cannot be compared. LPL is more or less at sea level and MAN is much lower than LBA so both will have less snow to clear, and in the case of MAN, loads more money to invest in hugely expensive snow clearing equipment, not to mention a substantially larger workforce to operate it.

It's still snowing here in Cookridge. I have around 7" of white stuff on my conservatory roof, so even as they clear the runway it will be covering over again. Even with runways and taxiways clear, it's the braking action that will determine when movements can start.

It seems to me that every time it snows at LBA, the airport, and by implication the staff, are criticised because it takes longer to re-open than other airports, none of which are situated nearly 700' above sea level!
Quite right, I watched the stream at Manchester from early doors. I reckon they had maybe an inch or two tops (the grass was still visible).
It was also raining from before 10am, whilst LBA had 6/7 inches and was still falling til lunchtime.
It’s madness to compare the two and to criticise LBA and its capabilities

I visited my parents this afternoon who live close to the airport. I measured the snow to be 20cm. It was a lot of snow in comparison with most of the other airport you are right, but I still think the questions should be asked. Can it be cleared quicker? Why is the ILS always knocked out, is that something that can be fixed so it doesn't keep happening.

It LBA has, for example, 5 to 6 inches more snow than Manchester then there will an an extra 11,000 cubic metres of snow to clear just from the runway, even though MAN’s runway is longer. 11,000 cubic metres is the same as the snow being 5ft high covering a standard football pitch.

Klm57y has diverted to Teeside. Ryr1hz in currently in the hold has decided to make an approach to 32. No glideslope due to the depth of snow in front of the ILS aerial according to atc. Localiser dme approach only.

Ryr403h (Dublin) still in the hold I guess waiting to see if his colleague gets in.

I think I addressed this the last time we had snow. The snow increases the apparent ground height. The Glidepath needs a piece of land in front of it where the ground height doesn't change. The equipment monitors detect the change in the radio beam and shuts down the equipment as the correct glideslode can no longer be guaranteed ie not safe. Nothing to do but wait for the thaw. Sometimes it can be caused by ice/snow on the monitor aerials but until someone can get out there safely then once again, wait for the thaw.

RYR1HZ has gone around.

Diverting to Man.

The viz is ok its we need the cloudbase to lift. It's currently overcast at 300ft. RYR403H is diverting to EMA.

EXS071W en route from Glasgow (did this divert earlier) has just called Jet2 ops to say that without the glidescope they won't get in.

Yes I remember. So does this apply to all airport with ILS equipment? You don't hear about these kind of problems at other airports. In fact you don't hear about it at any other airport at all. Surely there must be a resolve? I've been around for a few years now. I admit that I don't have the technical expertise so forgive me, but in all the years I have been interested in the aviation topic I have never come across this until recently. We are losing traffic not because the runway isn't cleared but because there is snow on the ground in front of the ILS equipment. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

If it’s as simple as snow thawing, get a mobile industrial heater blower with a diesel generator and thaw the snow on the ground around the ILS. That would be my smarter not harder idea - I know it would be impractical, but surely when the airport is losing traffic, they could look for innovative ideas to mitigate issues for the future? even if these events are rare, they do happen more at LBA- or that at least is the perception. Alternatively, do like they do on football pitches in colder countries, have a heated coil on the ground to keep it above freezing.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
