The runway is concrete. Not tarmac. Chances are they'll need to replace one or two of the concrete slabs as they did when a similar thing happened in 2024.

During the overnight winter closures they can replace at least 2-3 of these concrete slabs. The silo is still on site so mixing the concrete on site won’t be a problem. If not they could bring it to site premixed by trucking it in. If I remember correctly they use a very quick fast setting mix

But first they’ll have to wait and sit it out until the contractors are called out, they will bring out all required equipment to site with them.

Well the match has finished on TV now so they're probably on their way. Let's hope they haven't all been having a Friday night 'session' or they'll all be arriving in taxis!

Oh well. sh*t happens. Any single runway airfield could potentially face the same.
It happened at EDI last year too.

With an average 28 min arrival delay and an average 100 min departure delay (source FR24) I would say that's a damn good recovery. Credit to all involved to get things operational again. My visit to the Multi flight cafe this PM will now not be a boring one too
FR24 is only calculating the delay to flights that have already departed, which is eight of them (at the current time, 08:00)
The flights that have departed so far have either been away based flights (RYR.WZZ), Jet2 using aircraft already on the ground before the airport shut yesterday and impressively, two RYR flights that repositioned in very early from MAN this morning, hence why the delays of departed aircraft isn’t yet that bad.

Unfortunately, this average departure delay is going to get worse before it gets better as there are ten “based aircraft”flights that haven’t yet departed, all of which were scheduled to depart by now. Most of these flights require aircraft to reposition in from elsewhere and there’s at least 6 Jet2 aircraft yet to position in to cover their morning departures.

Quite the operation needed, especially on the first Saturday of Half Term!

I understand after been told that the contractors on site last night have done a temporary fix to the damaged runway surface area using 8-10 tonnes of Tarmac, or put it another way that’s 2 tipper waggon loads.
It will be replaced with concrete once the overnight winter runway maintenance restarts in a few weeks time

Is the concrete batching plant for the runway repairs? I assuned it was just for the new stands.

10 tons = 2 tipper waggon loads???????? Obviously using Tonka toys then, maybe even Dinky toys :giggle:
The average '4 wheeler' carries 9.5 to 10 tons, the average '8 wheeler' carries around 20 tons.
Your little local tarmac cowboy (oops did I just say cowboy, I meant contractor ) may well use something that carries 5 or 6 tons as it's easier to get up their valued victim's (customer's) driveways.

It seems that the area of the runway that broke up on Friday had already been subject to a temporary repair and the cause is apparently deemed to be aircraft braking hard at that point to stop in time for exit off 32 in to taxiway alpha. The damaged area was just prior to that exit off 32.

The airport has issued a directive for pilots to avoid doing this and if required to backtrack after a 180 or using the loop. They've stated that the damaged area will be permanently repaired when overnight runway repairs recommence in mid November.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
