I don't want to put the "cat among the pigeons" but I have never ever had a problem with the escalator/steps on arrival. I can agree with WH comment regarding a possible calamity if people can't exit the escalator, so to avoid it, the escalator can't be used. I can remember the days of the 74 seat Viscount being the biggest aircraft at LBA, so rarely any problem.

I am sure someone at LBA has thought of it, but my suggestion would be to place a barrier (good idea?) at the top of the steps so that the exit to the escalator would always be clear. Better still, why not restrict the number of passengers entering the building and then the escalator can be used. But then people will moan about being held up - no patience nowadays.

It has been commented on here many times before, that people are quick to complain if things are not right, but never praise when things are good.

If members are not happy at the rate of improvement, tell the airport, offer them £millions to get the work done quickly and if you are really not happy, go to another airport, as I am sure that people use LBA because they have had an unhappy experience(s) at other airports.

We have all seen complaints about the airport and the escalator inparticular on social media and probably heard the whinging ourselves when weve been using the airport and whilst we may think its unjustified we have to accept that its the customers perception thats important- not ours. The airport needs to bridge the gap between now and when the works are completed by making even minimal changes (like the escalator and door issue) and definitely by demonstrating that things will get better. A display in the departure and arrivals corridor of how its going to look would go a long way to reassuring the airports customers that the transformation is on the way. You see this kind of thing all over the place in cities where develoments take place and the public is being inconvenienced.

I must be lucky, or deaf, as I have never heard anyone complain about the escalator not being on when I have arrived at the LBA.
I don't use "social media" (I was told recently that this forum is social media) because people can put on what they like. A friend recently told me he had a "rant" on facebook about something that annoyed him, because it makes him feel better if he "gets it off his chest".
The number of times I have heard people say "I'll never use that airport/airline again" when they have had what they think is a bad experience, then later actually use the same airport/airline.

I would be interested if any of our members know someone who has Vetoed an airline/airport and still do to this day. There will be some, but not many.

If he everyone that had a bad experience at an airport vetoed it, they would quickly run out of airports. I have excellent visits to LBA and bad ones, but it's my airport and whatever, I wouldn't go elsewhere unless I had to.

I've had terrible experiences at MAN, as did my late sister. And at Corfu. And at Tenerife South. And Faro. And various others, especially Heathrow. By definition, most airports that are successful are busy. Sometimes chaotic. But the same can be said for Railway Stations . It's just how they are. Moaning is pointless and just gets people stressed.

Of course, the BBC favourite at DSA was apparently universally popular, but I suspect so would LBA be if it were virtually empty most of the time and people had a seat to sit on and another for their bags . Unfortunately, empty airports dont do so well and DSA is a case in point

For information, anybody arriving back to Manchester airport through the evening beyond about 21:30 will likely have to go on a major detour at the moment too as the M62 is currently having night closures. Not directly related to the airport experience there but it won't be a very good experience for those returning to Yorkshire.

I arrived back at Manchester from Paris yesterday about 22:30 and as you say M62 was closed. My back up plan was go up the M65 to Colne and back home to Otley from there- but just be warned the M65 is also closed from jct 5-7. So a detour through 30mph zones, traffic lights and roundabouts ensued. Usual rubbish diversion signage. Got home at 00:45!

EX9 and Seasider are you able to give us some more information about the circumstances surrounding the escalator, ie tme of day, number of flights arriving around the same time, was the member of staff airline or airport etc. I am interested as I can't remember the last time I saw it working.

It was working when we arrived from Bratislava on the evening of 12th March.

In reply to airforced, the only time I have seen it operating (in the last 10 years) was when we arrived from FAO on 30 March 2023. According to the log I keep, we landed at 14.56 local.
For information, I tend not to use LBA (and all airports) between June and August, I have arrived 75 times in the last 20 years at various times of the day and days of the week.

I thought it was permanently fixed by simply slowing it down. Didnt that info come via one of Heathers reports?

The escalator has to be monitored by airport staff as it can only be operated with a key.

I can only assume the inconsistencies surrounding it being operational are the airport remembering to go and turn it on or they dont always have someone available to watch it.

In years gone by, there used to be a number of terminal staff on duty (they kept changing the role name) who would monitor the escalator, queues and gates etc

Now it only appears to be watched by the terminal duty manager or duty support officer. The rest of the customer service staff appear to have specific roles such as PRM, car parking and bussing to name a few.

Thanks EX9 We were told some time ago something like the airport didn't have enough people to spare anyone to man it and that it was down to the airlines to man it. Maybe because all of the flack flying over years the airport sometimes now find someone to do the job. The majority view seems that isn't very often though. Still not satisfactory though. Roll on the new terminal.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
