I wish our local council would support our local airport in the same way as the Sounthend local councils are doing.
Why are Leeds City Councils always populated by backward village Luddites?
They always seem to want other cities to do well but not Leeds.
The airport expansion and Leeds Arena should have been brought to fuition 30 years ago.

Its a conspiracy.

Leeds council is actually run by Manchester council.

Secretly they block any attempt by people in Leeds of having any public services that are decent that could potentially cause any compitition. :diablo:

It's not just Leeds.

Physical Bristol is actually run by four councils.

The city council is responsible for about two thirds of the urban conurbation but, because the city's boundaries have not expanded since the early 1960s (unlike practically every other city in the country), the incessant growth of the urban sprawl since then means three other councils also have a hand in running parts of physical Bristol.

They never agree on anything, especially the two largest - Bristol City and South Gloucestershire. Bristol lost government cash for a tram system because these two councils squabbled like children over the location of the northern terminus.

Bristol Airport, about to put in planning applications for its major expansion, falls within North Somerset Unitary authority, the smallest of the Bristol region authorities, but the one having the say on the region's airport. Few people expect an outcome positive to the airport and the hope may well lie in a public enquiry or subsequent appeals againts the cuncil's decision. This would be time consuming.

I believe the city of Leeds extends beyond the core urban heart to include surrounding towns. I keep suggesting this for Bristol but it seems from what you say about Leeds even this is not the complete answer.

It all smacks of a type of corruption to me. Councillors pander the the pressure put on them by local and influential people who don't want the airport on their doorstep and rather than lose their support, and they ignore the wishes of the majority and the greater good. I am sure that LBA will eventually get its terminal development, but it is too easy for councillors to slow down the process and it appears that they do so without even having to explain themselves to us, the people who they are supposed to represent!. I look forward to the opportunity to challenge the chair of the Leeds West Planning Committee about the delays the next time he shows up at the Consultative Committee and it will be very interesting to see what he says.

Leeds has indicated that it intends to put forward a bid for inclusion as a World Cup venue for the 2018 World Cup if England is successful in winning the tournament bidding process. Having World Cup matches at Elland Road would be fantastic and is a real must. I couldn't tolerate the idea of them happening in Sheffield, or Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle, and not here in Leeds. For the City it would be an embarassment not to be included. After all, Leeds is England's 3rd City and the 4th biggest in the UK, so it has to take part one way or another.

Bearing in mind that for the 1996 European Championships, when Spain met France at Elland Road, LBA had around 40 charters in the day, inlcuding B747, DC10, A300 and numerous other types. At that time, the airport was relatively quiet, but still struggled to cope with the passenger throughput. For a World Cup match, it is likely to be worse, especially if the fixture is a big one again. In 1996, aircraft had to double up on the apron and park down the entire length of the North/South taxiway, which seriously slowed down the process of take offs and landings for our scheduled and charter operators on the day. The apron is bigger now, but assuming they are still around, we now have a large fleet of Jet2 aircraft, more movements on the ground, more passengers, and by 2018, I expect yet more based aircraft belonging to other operators. But the terminal is only marginally bigger than it was in 1996.

I have therefore suggested to the Airport Directors that they point out to Leeds City Council that if they harbour a realistic desire to bring the World Cup to Leeds, they are definitely going to need a bigger airport terminal. Even in the short term, the presence of an arena in Leeds may well increase the numbers of passengers flying into Leeds from places such as Ireland, Scotland etc, to see their favourite performers, which again will only re-inforce the need for a terminal expansion. My 'suggestion' has been copied to the Airport Operations Director, so it will be interesting to see what happens!

Today, Wednesday 22nd July, LBA took delivery of a brand new top of the range airport fire appliance. Does anyone know if this is replacing a current older version or whether it is an addition to the current fleet? (possibly more fire engines to cope with larger a/c...such as the 777?)

Apparently the new fire tender cost in the region of around £230,000. The main reason for the purchase was apparently to improve the response times. The appliance will replace the old Fire 1.

For the moment the vehicle still isn't in use. The makers forgot to send the key that opens up the equipment storage areas. Presumably someones head will roll at the manufacturers.

It was nice to see the new fire tender at the airport and hopefully this will lead to the renewal of the entire fleet over the next couple of years.

Yeah definately. It looked really modern and now makes some of the others look even older. Then again, if they do their job that will do for me.

So, from a sporting prospective, yesterday was a belting day for Leeds. Not only was the Rugby League World Cup 2013 confirmed, but the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup also confirmed. Elland Road is a confirmed pool match venue for 2015. Both Headingley and Elland Road will surely be used in 2013, and hopefully Odsal and the Galpharm.

Wouldn't it be nice to see France v Spain...memories of Euro 96.

...wouldn't it just.

Carrying on in the celebratory mood, it's Yorkshire day tomorrow.

[textarea]Samba Beats Celebrate Yorkshire Day at Leeds Bradford International Airport

Visitors to Yorkshire are set to be given an unusual welcome when they fly into the region on Yorkshire Day (Saturday, 1st August). The Welcome to Yorkshire samba band will be striking up their rhythmic beat as new arrivals touchdown in the greatest county in the UK.

“The students who make up the samba band are a fantastic example of what’s happening in Yorkshire today. Their music really lifts the spirits and they’re becoming quite a Yorkshire feature,” says Gary Verity, Chief Executive of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire.

“They’re colourful, vibrant and a fabulous first impression of what visitors can expect from our region on Yorkshire Day and throughout the year.”

The samba band’s music has already been reaching international audiences as their music features on the Welcome to Yorkshire TV advertisements and www.yorkshire.com (http://www.yorkshire.com//)

The band is fired up to celebrate Yorkshire Day and is excited to be playing live for new audiences as they arrive into the region. With performances throughout the day the rhythmic beats are certain to attract attention, and although dancing is optional there’s sure to be a few toes tapping.
Tony Hallwood, LBIA Commercial Director, said:
“As Yorkshire's premier gateway we are delighted to be celebrating this very special day with Welcome to Yorkshire, capturing the fun and vibrancy of our region for both our inbound and outbound passengers”

Hi

Incident at LBA NOW.

Anyone know what’s going on up at LBA right now as all I’ve heard so far is mention of a fire? Last aircraft to land was a Flybe from Southampton.

All landings and take-offs have been stopped as the runway is CLOSED... Aircraft inbound include the (PIA) A310, bmi regional Embrear 145 and a Eastern Airways, BAe Jetstream 41 all are been put into the hold while a Thomas Cook A320 bound for Dalaman has been told to hold on the delta taxi-way.

Fire engines and ambulances have been scrambled and are racing to the scene from both Leeds and Bradford.

Looks like the above Incident now over. As the Runway has now been reopend. All aircraft are arriving in and departing with out any problems and no big delays.

Still dont know whats happened but it looks like its something to do with a flybe aircarft.

Yes an incident occurred at about 1830 this evening.

Initially, a Boeing 737 Jet 2 (not sure of destination, reg or flight num) radioed the tower reporting a delay to departure slot due to a luggage problem in the rear hold. The aircraft was on stand 11.

Then the pilot radioed the tower a few mins later and asked for the airport fire service to attend due to smoke in the rear hold.

After a short while the fire chief attended along with 3 appliances and a few firemen were running around the rear of the aircraft while the passengers disembarked.

At the same time, the PIA inbound from ISB was at 3,500ft on a 16 mile final as well as a flight from jersey i think.

Tower asked the fire chief for an immediate report and he said that there was a ground incident and he had requested local authority appliances as per procedure.

As a result the airport had no level of fire catagory and the PIA could not land and was ordered into the hold at LBA at 6,000ft along with the other flight.

The PIA flight then told the tower he had only enough fuel until 1844. Also an airbus had taxied toward the 32 runway and was told to hold position and turn off its engines.

The PIA then eventually diverted to MAN, with around 10 appliances now on the apron surrounding the 737.

After a short while the local appliances were stood down and a category 8 level given to the airfield so operations could resume.

Apparently there was a heat source in the rear hold which was the cause of the smoke.

it seems like jet2 are having a few problems with there aircraft latley, maybe they should be looking now at newer aircraft to replace these old ones they are having problems with.

well in you previous post to mention but one, not knocking jet2 but they do need to upgrade the fleet as they have had a few poblems .

All airline have occasions when aircraft are unserviceable. Nothing to worry about at all.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
