So one the one hand we have a Government promising a huge infrastructure programme to partly offset the economic effects of Covid-19, including the Northern Powerhouse and provide for the future whilst on the other we have these groups springing up with financial backing from dubious vested interests trying to wreck every project before it starts. If we’re not careful our future prosperity is going to be sacrificed on the twin altars of climate change and the environment whilst the rest of the World, less fussed about unrealistic green targets, leaves us behind.

The trouble is every single "build" project could easily come under the same climate change bracket. We know that electricity, cements and steel production used in building use enormous amounts of global resources and produce many more tons of CO2 than aviation does globally. Here in Leeds we have a council following a climate emergency policy yet approves construction of new skyscrapers. Ironically, skyscrapers paid for by Leeds University who also peddle the climate catastrophe rhetoric.
Instead on this nonsensical Leeds policy, developers could be using the opportunity to build back better with greener environmentally sound buildings that will last the test of time.

Given the developing news over the last 24 hours, I doubt that many UK airports could justify staying open over the festive period. UK flights getting banned all over Europe.

I have said this for months, and however much economic hurt it will cause in the short term, we need to go back into full lockdown and allow vaccinations to start getting a hold of this damn virus. This stop start attitude of governments is producing more doubt, confusion and uncertainty. This has now created extended economic hardship that could have been vastly improved by stronger and more decisive action much earlier. We must not under-estimate the severity of this damn thing. But it needs seeing off once and for all now and then we can all have a better 2021, rather than false short-term hope

So that’s lockdown for about 8 months? You think that’s possible?

I'm just so worried about my job...this can't continue. So many countries banning us from entering from UK. Watched the news last night and Wuhan back to normal. Where did the UK go so wrong that we have ended up the sick person of Europe!

Probably a little excessive but lockdown needs to happen. Point being more earlier decisive action would mean we wouldn’t still be where we are now

every time we come out of lockdown the numbers go back up. earlier lockdown might have kept numbers down but it just means that's where you have to stay until you get significant protection from the vaccine. vaccination beyond the vulnerable sections of the population isn't due to start until Q2 2021 at the earliest (assuming all goes well). this of course takes no account of any other damage lockdown does.

there isn't an easy solution.

I feel your pain and many others alike.

China rules with an iron fist. In this country people don’t think the rules apply including members of parliament. The reason it’s not working is people not longer have the trust, a track and trace system not fit for purpose and people deciding how they can bend the rules to suit them.

Try that in China and there’s one outcome!!

They screwed up by not insisting a lot earlier that face masks must be worn and also all kids should be wearing them. Walked down to Mozzers yesterday, and there are still too many groups of youngsters going around without masks thinking that they are somehow immune.

The governments first major c**** up was when we had the first big lockdown, during that lockdown when we were all sat on our arses a proper nationwide track and trace app should of been launched with an official launch date, a bit like count down to NYE so that the whole country was ready for it, instead we had that useless app that came out months after what half the population knew nothing of!
regarding people not wearing face masks in supermarkets, all the supermarkets should come together and agree that no one can enter their stores without a mask on, that way no supermarket can profit over another.
We now have covids mutant ninja brother on the loose, based on the fact its a super spreader and virus rates are going through the roof I feel a PROPER lockdown is the only answer, but I can tell you now there is not a cat in hells chance any air travel is going to happen for at least 6 months or more to what we class as average levels!

I agree with you entirely. The problem with this virus is it is an invisible threat like flu and unlike MMR, Chicken Pox and others which can be seen by everyone. It’s almost like out of site out of mind. What the hell happened to people’s education, community and civil responsibility. I knew there were irresponsible, ignorant and stupid people in this country but I am staggered at the sheer number of them.
Let’s be led by the Science not the pyjama clad, school gate scientists and the many morons on social media. We need to Grow up and take responsibility as adults.
I am seething at the mass exoduses around the country.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
