Leeds Bradford - General Thread

You may remember my suggestion a while back that the airport might pick litter at the cemetery and prune back trees and shrubs at 14 end to improve viewing. It didnt receive a positive response from forum members who basically said "why should/would they"

Anyway I wrote to the CEO who's secretary replied thanking me for the suggestion and said they would arrange to prune back the trees/shrubs shortly and that they had already made the first pick of litter.

I am pleased with this result. When I see the overall result of the pruning I will write to LCC asking them to do something with the trees and shrubs on their land.

Great result but don’t expect LCC to do anything they claim they are skint all the time, I have wrote to them quite a few times to sort the path out down to 32 end beside the golf course, as they have to keep public footpaths accessible but that’s just a mud bath

Well if they dont act I will request permission to do it myself.

Re the footpath, try contacting Leisure Services, they are the department with responsablity for footpaths

Having just spent a few hours at the RVP at the airport over t’hill today, anything LBA do to improve things for those of us who support the airport, and want the airport to be there, should be welcomed with open arms

The new Alex Sobel

She is the Labour candidate for NW Leeds as Sobel is moving elsewhere….may be worth the support group speaking with her to canvass her view on the airport, although as she lives outside the constituency and is a neighbour and friend of Sobel I doubt it will be positive!

Interestingly I overheard a few Labour delegates coming back from conference on a train towards Shipley a bit back. They seemed to be involved in their party's campaign for the Shipley Ward, and were quite loudly discussing the issue of what they described as "Tory NIMBYs" in the ward, which I took to mean Baildon residents in the context of Labour's stated policy to build 1.5 million new homes.

Notwithstanding the fact that there would likely be these "NIMBYs" sat with them (I'm one!) whom they might in a year's time need their support to win the ward, but it did make me chuckle thinking about just a few miles away the Labour party are in bed with some other NIMBYs over LBA! I shall be looking forward to them canvassing in the area when a GE is called, I'm sure I'll have some rather robust questions for them especially around their policies for the airport!

LBA is still going through a lengthy process to establish new arrival and departure routings. Absolutely nothing has been decided yet and it failed its initial stage of planning for this. This doesn't mean the process is no longer possible. it just means it needs to address points raised by the CAA before it can proceed to the next stage.

39 years ago today, our new, extended, Runway 14/32 opened , with visits by British Airways and Wardair Boeing 747's (and for good measure a Braathens SAFE 737 200 ).

It doesn't feel like so long ago that I stood in the footpath near the golf course most of the day and will never forget the excitement of seeing the BA 747 turning onto the glideslope down over Leeds, or just how big it seemed as it landed in front of me . Simply awesome, particularly when for the most part, we had nothing bigger than a 737 200 (with the exception of one Monarch 757, one Boeing 720, and maybe one or two others, all of which I missed due to being at work).

Thank goodness it wasn't a day like today, with fog spoiling the party!

I was in the new part of the terminal that wasn't yet open. I had a view looking onto around the stand 8 area from the first floor. My mum was working at the airport at the time . Airport staff were offered a flight to London but for whatever reason my mum didn't take up the offer.

Is it me or have things gone really quiet at LBA yet again? I shall elaborate on my thinking:
Redevelopment/regeneration - we are discussing (sort of) an Autumn start date on the applicable thread but still no real evidence of anything actually starting
Route Development - seems more chance of BCFC getting promoted this season - and that ain't happening!
Night flying - council stalling and being pathetic as ever -CLEUD less!

I could possibly go on but what I am hoping is that one positive announcement may lead to a snowball effect - but a bit like the war in Ukraine - things seem like a stalemate just now. Anyone else any thoughts on the matter?

I was lucky enough to be on the first BA 747 flight and I will never forget it. We were lucky enough to get a window seat and after flying over England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, Captain Mike Webster flew the aircraft very low over the district before we landed back at LBA. I can still remember how we temporarily stopped numerous Sunday morning football and rugby matches, when the players stopped and stood in awe watching this magnificent aircraft at close quarters. We were certainly lucky as the weather on the previous day had been awful and the airport was closed in the days that followed due to fog!

I went to the airport on Saturday and it appears that a start on the terminal extension is imminent. The whole of the car park where the extension is to be sited is now cordoned off. There are just a few cars left in this area, presumably awaiting collection by their owners. Previously, this was the case for only part of it. Additionally part of the adjacent car park is also now cordoned off.

I am currently doing a dissertation on public attitude towards Leeds Bradford Airport and my aims and objectives are to find out perceptions of sustainability of airports as well as attitude towards the expansion of Leeds Bradford airport, specifically attitude towards the cancellation of the brand new terminal and the go ahead of plans for the new terminal extension. I am trying to develop a questionnaire to achieve this. Any ideas of what sort of questions may help this or what sort of questions may interest you to be answered would be greatly appreciated. I don't normally allow dissertation requests but as you have posted previously on the forums I will allow it.

Has the airport done what it can to develop? My attitude towards LBA is good. Under the current ownership they are doing what they can under the circumstances.

Do I feel the new terminal should have been pursued? Of course but I also feel the fall-back terminal extension will enables it to become part of a new terminal in the future.

Do I feel more should be done to tackle climate change? Absolutely but why should regional airports such as LBA suffer when some other regional airports have been allowed to expand significantly over the years. If nationally we are to see restricted growth from our airports in the future I would support a system that allows important regional airports such as LBA to continue to grow to fulfil regional aviation needs.

Do I think LBA is an economic driving force for Leeds and West Yorkshire? Yes, it is widely know that airports are an economic driving force and they provide a catalyst to regional growth.
